GUNS IN THE NEWS--October 11, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories are welcome in this thread, as well as gun-related editorials.
3 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
4 - In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted to the 'Net within the past 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board.
5 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.

1. Second Victim of School Shooting Dies
"ST. CLOUD, Minn. - A 15-year-old boy who was allegedly shot in the forehead by a fellow high school student died Friday, hospital officials said.
Authorities say freshman Jason McLaughlin, 15, opened fire at Bartell and senior Aaron Rollins, who died shortly after the attack.
Prosecutors charged McLaughlin on Sept. 26 with second-degree murder and attempted murder. A spokesman for Attorney General Mike Hatch declined comment Friday because the case was in juvenile court.
Investigators have not said what the motive might have been. "

Perhaps the poor kid was motivated by the sort of idiotic crap the gun rights movement spouts on the internet:

"Newswhores can put on their makeup and make up their put-ons all they want to, spinning empty air into tinny murmurs that signify not a thing. We lawful, peaceable, long-suffering gun owners are constitutionally, morally and spiritually right, and we shall prevail! While the socialist, liberty-usurping anti-self-defense movement tells decent citizens in many parts of the country - including Minnesota - that our grandmothers, mothers, sisters and daughters cannot defend their own beautiful lives against armed rapists and vicious murderers, landing millions of dollars from misled, misguided rich people, we know with certainty that Freedom will win, because Freedom always wins."

2. Am I the only one that has a real problem with this?
Let me explain: (I do not remember the date of the first one, but not too long ago)
8 year old black male shoots teacher in Florida, kills him, tried as ADULT.
15 year old, presumably white male shoots two, kills two, charged with SECOND degree murder, being tried in juvenile court????????

American Justice System- Oxymoron!:wtf:

3. you're kidding me

No, I'm sure you're not ... but an 8-yr-old TRIED, let alone as an adult??

I look south, and I see what Canada could become if the Canadian Alliance ever got into government. Fortunately, it won't happen ... but there are still too many people here who'd like to see things like that happening.

4. Our son has been down here in the US
for three years now, and has gradually become more and more like the murkins in his thinking. Sometimes, I would like to slap him upside the head (to use a popular local phrase), and send him home to grandma. At one time, he was capable of seeing things in multiple shades of grey; now everything is black and white and Mom and I are not capable to change anything (he's too old to listen to us, or so he thinks!). Last time I looked, the Canadian Alliance was primarily an Alberta and BC thing. Haven't heard about any inroads into Manitoba (thank God)

5. Manitoba safe
As far as I know ... but in Saskatchewan the election cometh.

Aargh. I just went to look at the Saskatchewan Party's website and it crashed my netscape. How perfect. Frankly, I'd never heard of the damned thing until this week, or at least never noticed, but I guess it's the Official Opposition out there.
http://www.skcaucus.com/

Not bad enough that the leader is named "Elwin Hermanson"; here's his bio:
http://www.skcaucus.com/leader/our_leader.htm#Biography

From 1979 through 1989 Elwin served on the Board of Directors of the Full Gospel Bible Institute. He has also served on the Beechy-Demaine Economic Development Committee.

In 1988, Elwin's interest in politics led him to run for a seat in the federal parliament as one of the first Reform Party candidates in Canada. Elwin served three terms on the Reform Party's National Executive Council and was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Riding of Kindersley-Lloydminster in 1993.

During his time in Ottawa, he served as House Leader and then Chief Agriculture Critic for the Reform Party.

When the Saskatchewan Party was formed in August of 1997, Elwin agreed to serve as one of the initial members of the Saskatchewan Party Steering Committee.

That Full Gospel Bible Institute is the source of various other leading lights on the religious right out there.

Here's a fun one: The Saskatchewan Party Plan to Grow Saskatchewan by 100,000 People in Ten years (gordon bennett, I hate people who use the verb "grow" in this lazy ignorant way). A great big long thing all about cutting taxes ... and not one single occurrence of the words "immigrant" or "immigration".

And of course it opposes the firearms registry and wants to remove abortion from the list of services covered by the health care plan ...

The antidote to those sites: http://www.saskndp.com/

The election is on November 5.

6. Fewer guns, more death
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=35019

In the first, a British paper reported authorities have seen a 35 percent increase in gun violence in 2002 – not so ironically, in the sixth year since Parliament passed a law banning personal ownership of most firearms.

In the first, a British paper reported authorities have seen a 35 percent increase in gun violence in 2002 – not so ironically, in the sixth year since Parliament passed a law banning personal ownership of most firearms.

Meanwhile, here in the States, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study released last week found no conclusive evidence gun-control laws curb violent crime, suicides by firearms or firearms-related accidents.

The study found "inconclusive evidence" that gun-control laws, which include entire bans of certain classes of weapons, have any appreciable effect on gun-related violence.

Well there's a reliable news source. I must admit, I got a kick out of all their articles blaming the Oklahoma City bombing on the Iraqis. Their mental illness is scary.

18. Here's the BBC link for the 1st story
Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 03:44 PM by 0rganism
worlnetdaily would be considered a questionable resource by many, but here's the BBC story to which it refers.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/2640817.stm

Personally, I don't think the worldnetdaily author's editorializing on the cause being a ban on firearm ownership is merited. There could be a multiplicity of causes, such as the change in standards from the time the last such a report was released:

"Overall crime in the year to September was up 9.3%, with domestic burglary up 7.9%, drugs offences up 12.3% and sex offences up 18.2%.

"Home Office officials insisted, however, that the new system of including all crimes, whether there was supporting evidence or not, was responsible for some of the increases.

"When that new recording system was taken into account, overall crime rose by 2%, they said, with burglary up 5%."

I would be similarly skeptical of the author's take on the CDCP statistics, but in this case the primary source is equally suspect.

7. Police officer dies after accidental shooting
On Thursday morning, Ramos was getting ready for work when his personal semi-automatic Beretta fired, hitting him in the side. Ramos did not have the safety on the weapon at the time, which is a common practice for law enforcement. The death of the 20-year veteran came as a shock to the department.

You would think California could have came up with a law to prevent this from happening.

9. Connecticut Man Is Charged in Wife's Suicide by His Gun
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/10/10/nyregion/10SUIC.html

The man, Steven C. Bartush, was charged on Tuesday with second-degree manslaughter because, the police said, he knew that his wife was suicidal, but he did not remove his guns from the house or lock them up. His wife, Joan Bartush, 32, shot herself on Oct. 6, 2001, two days after she was released from Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan. She used a .32-caliber handgun that her husband had put in an unlocked dresser drawer in the bedroom the night before, according to the arrest warrant.

Damn its a good thing she didnt lock herself in the garage with the car running. :wtf: Sad world when a grown adult cant decide for themself if they would like to live or die. Its even sadder when a family member has to go to jail because another family member decided they didnt want to live anymore.

http://www.nola.com/archives/t-p/index.ssf?/base/news-1/1065592553225280.xml

A 36-year-old LaPlace man remained hospitalized Tuesday after he was shot in the chest by his ex-girlfriend Monday night, St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's detectives said.

But authorities think Violet T. Fleming, 37, shot Sean Schnyder because he was trying to force his way into her home, said Capt. Mike Tregre, Sheriff's Office spokesman.

According to an incident report, Fleming called deputies to her home about 10 p.m. because Schnyder was trying to get in. But before deputies could arrive, they got another call reporting the shooting.

21. Thank you Wayne
Most of us gun packing Vermont liberals are very aware of those
biased "news" reports against gun owners and will NEVER vote for
any candidate that attempts to disarm us. Look up Vermont history sometime.

We don't dial 911 to resolve an immediate issue nor do we resort
to psysic solutions to real problembs.
