Armed bailiffs stop courthouse shooter
http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/05/07/courthouse.shooting.ap/index.html

"A man who was supposed to be returning divorce papers at a courthouse pulled out a gun instead Wednesday, opening fire in the lobby before two bailiffs fatally shot him."

When you've got trained, armed people ready and willing to stand up to violence, this is precisely the kind of outcome you would hope for in this kind of situation.

1. Um .... Bailiffs qualify as 'well regulated'
Amazingly: rarely do gun aficionados demand gun owners be trained .... only able to acquire .....

5. did you know?
Did you know that statistically CCW permit holders are many times, sometimes hundreds of times less likely to be involved in crime than your average citizen?

Did you know that statistically CCW permit holders, when involved in a shooting, are less likely to cause collateral damage than police officers?

Kind of makes you wonder if maybe CCW permit holders aren't pretty well trained after all.

If you live in the United States, that is in fact the world in which we live, and I happen to think it's pretty nice most of the time.

15. Why do gun controllers always bring up paranoia first...?
Along with all the other "unmentionable" subjects. Maybe it's on THEIR minds in their world.

Hope you got your 8-9 hours of sleep last night. I did.

26. Ah .... Gun controllers ....
Edited on Fri May-09-08 12:50 AM by Trajan
Guns should never be controlled in any way ...

EVERYONE should be able to get a gun : Felons .... Psychotics ... Angry human beings ....

There should NEVER be any sort of control of ANY weapon whatsoever ... because to promote ANY such restriction would lead to being identified as a 'gun controller' in a cute little forum in a small, dank corner of the internets ....

Oh .... You want to keep felons and Psychotics from owning weapons ? ...

What are you ? .. some sort of gun controller ?

Reminds me of those who demand belief in god, but not that god .... THIS god ....

You, sir, oh wise definer of people: YOU are a gun controller, sir ....

Give up your club card immediately, mister gun controller ...

Sheeesh .... more idiocy from 'thelowroad.org' (AKA The Gungeon) ....

19. Who said anything about well regulated?
I don't demand that gunowners be trained for the same reason I don't demand that voters be trained. I would like children to be trained but you and I could never agree on the training, so since we can't have an honest debate and come to a resolution children will continue to die.

27. I said something about 'well regulated' ...
and so did the founding fathers ....

But you are right: There is no having a reasonable discussion in this little world .... I rarely come here .. Perhaps I should delete the Gungeon from my latest threads page .... It is much like I/P ..... Crazy as all get out ....

Bye bye .....

28. Baliffs are usually officers of the court and can carry a firearm.
Forgive me if I don't understand how the well regulated phrase would refer to them. They are agents of the government in this context. Hey though if you can't handle a simple question, then you are right you probably shouldn't come here and have your views challenged.

11. My mistake.
I was confused why you mentioned punks. Would punks stop an armed shooting rampage in public like these two bailiffs did? Obviously I was talking about people legally able to confront a shooter as the story related.

20. Are you talking about punks that buy a gun legally,
take the required courses, pass the extensive background checks and then pay the fees for their Concealed Carry Permit? I can't think of a concealed carry permit holder that keeps a gun in his/her waistband.

Which is why I asked for clarification? I'm not sure what I need to get over. If you thought your post was clear you are mistaken, I am just a dumb old fireman but it didn't make sense to me.

25. You confused me when you said punk with CCW.
Most punks don't have concealed carry permits. They just carry guns. I would say thanks for clearing it up but you didn't have anything to do with that. Thanks for the condescension.

3. That's sad that the man was so desparate as to do something stupid like that...
...I mean, it's great that he was stopped, but it's sad that he did that in the first place. He must have felt like he was losing everything, even his mind to do that.

Sad ending to a sad story.

All violence is sad. But the ending could have been much sadder in this case.

only happy to hear that 8 people who went to work that morning without a death wish went home to their family last night and not to the morgue.

18. No hatred.
Just weariness. I have been reading stories like that in the NRA mags for years. Triumphalism over someone getting shot is something I cannot seem to grok.

21. Not being an NRA member, I don't regularly read about these incidents...
What I have read seems little more than a recitation of how criminals have been thwarted by citizens using firearms. If that is "triumphalism," so be it. But I don't think people take great joy in someone getting shot. The point seems to be that the lawful use of firearms in self-defense goes on every day, far more than the gun-controllers would admit to. BTW, most use of firearms as described above is merely informing a criminal that a citizen is armed, or brandishing the gun, or firing the gun as a warning. The actual shooting of a criminal is far less common.

I'm also very weary of the kinds of vicious, day-to-day car-jackings, armed robberies, rapes, and home invasions (far, far more prevalent than "mass shootings"). We can expect to see more of these as the economy starts drawing flies. Self-defense is an honorable, sometimes heroic, never romantic action. Those who must resort to it should be quietly thanked and not ridiculed.

17. A gun free zone that works

Unlike most schools, this gun free zone has armed guards and metal detectors.

without armed guards and metal detectors there is no way to get criminal compliance.
