Gun control backers not bold on 2009
Gun control backers not bold on 2009

Lawmakers who favor gun control are not optimistic about next year even though Democrats may be running Congress and the White House.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.), the sponsor of legislation that would reinstate the expired federal assault weapons ban, dismissed the idea that her bill might pass in the 111th Congress.

McCarthy stressed that she is not giving up on reauthorizing the weapons ban that sunsetted in 2004, but also made clear she is not holding her breath.

Democratic presidential candidates have taken pains not to be portrayed as anti-gun, a perception that may have cost former Vice President Al Gore the presidency in 2000. Obama and Clinton have said on the campaign trail that they want to revive the assault weapons ban while also noting their respect for the Second Amendment.

House Democrats have not championed major gun control legislation this Congress. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), a gun control advocate, noted that many freshman Democrats — as well as next year’s prospective freshman Democrats — favor gun rights.

My favorite part of the story:

"House Democrats have not championed major gun control legislation this Congress. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), a gun control advocate, noted that many freshman Democrats — as well as next year’s prospective freshman Democrats — favor gun rights."

The times, they are 'a changin.

1. We can hope
I'm a democrat that favors gun rights. It's not mutually exclusive.

2. Thanks for posting this
I've noticed this myself and it's good to see it confirmed. There are so many real threats to our democracy and our way of life, embodied in the current incarnation of the Republican Party, that we sorely need the Democratic Party to take the reins. Without the anti-gun bogeyman scaring away blue-collar, rural, and RKBA voters all over the country, there is no limit to what the Democratic Party can accomplish.

3. I will almost certainly vote for Obama,
but if he is elected, I will definitely talk to my congressmen to help Obama get a severe and educational defeat when he first attacks gun rights.

4. McCarthy isn't trying to reinstate the 1994 non-ban, she's pushing a BAN.
But I agree, it's going nowhere. I think there is a widespread realization that something like H.R.1022 would be another 1994 at minimum.

6. i think for the time being
gun control is a dead issue in congress- like it should be.

and Heller may make it even more of a dead issue- atleast the handgun ban aspect of it

That there hasn't been more support for McCarthy's bill that would ban those shoulder things that go up. We need to get those things off the streets asap.
