NRA gives endorsement to Schweitzer
NRA gives endorsement to Schweitzer
By CHARLES S. JOHNSON
Gazette State Bureau

HELENA - The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund on Tuesday endorsed Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer's re-election, citing his strong support of the rights of gun owners, hunters and sportsmen.

"He's just done a great job defending the Second Amendment, hunting, fishing (and) access on the part of the public to public lands," NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said in a phone interview after a press conference in Billings.

"He also had legislation that secured $10 million for public access. He ended the moratorium on the buffalo hunt after 16 years."

Schweitzer, a lifetime NRA member, received an A rating from the NRA.

Something to keep an eye on.

It should be interesting to see how much Schweitzer wins by, then compare the percentage that vote for him with the percentage of the same people that vote Democrat in the presidential election as was done last cycle.

Kudoz Governor Schweitzer.

2. yeah, wouldn't that be something? we would have our first NRA backed Dem VP candidate.
I'm all for the second amendment, so this doesn't bother me that badly. It IS very important to a lot of gun enthusiasts, though. I think he's also a big farm guy. Those are 2 positives for the white rural working class Dem voter.

6. The question is, would he take it?
He strikes me as the kind of guy that wouldn't leave Montana until and unless he knew it would be left in good hands, and maybe not take it at all.

The kind of guy that would honor his commitments, if ya know what I mean.

3. He organized charter bus trips for elderly people to go to Canada

so they could buy prescription drugs at prices they could afford. Part of his 2000 Senate run, where he spent a lot of energy promoting awareness of just how difficult it was for rural elderly to get medical care and afford the drugs they needed.

Google Schweitzer + elderly to Canada for prescriptions

Of course the fed made him stop, cuz those drugs in Canada might be dangerous and all ... just protecting the CONSUMERS, donchaknow :eyes:

Now, of course, the big retailers are bringing drugs in from China where we are seeing some real problems with quality control...

He stood up to bush/cheney re our National Guard helicopters being in Iraq when we need them here to do important work during our fire seasons. He also stood up to DHS like the voters in MT wanted, on the REAL ID crap. DHS gave Montana 'an extension'. Brian laughed and said they can call it what ever they want, but we didn't ask for an extension, we said we aren't doin it.

He is doing much to get LOTS of people putting up windmills and using more solar.

He's really something.

4. One word: Integrity.
If I had to pick one word to describe the guy, based on everything I know about him, it would be: Integrity.

Something that alot of politicians seem to have lost somewhere along the way.

7. He is indeed, but hes also real,
Everything I know and have read about him, screams to me that hes a real guy, not some career politician who is only interested in people for thier votes.

A true peoples Governor, If you get my meaning. Thats my perception, anyway.

I would very much love to meet the guy, if I ever get up that way and get the chance. Kind of a stretch for me though, gas prices suck, and even in a sipper make it somewhat prohibitive, sadly.

9. Reaffirms what I've said about the NRA all along.
The NRA seems to be a Republican-supporting organization, but that is only because there are far more Republicans who support the right to keep and bear arms than there are Democrats.

But as this example shows, the NRA is quite goal-focused. They are quite happy to endorse Democrats, or probably anyone else, for that matter, so long as they support the right to keep and bear arms.
