NYC: four shooting sprees in two days.
Actually, not. The real headline reads: "Car hits NYC pedestrians for 4th time in 2 days."

Just curious where all of our public safety advocates stand on the issue of these dangerous tools causing so many injuries in our cities.

Car hits NYC pedestrians for 4th time in 2 days

June 21st, 2008 @ 7:52pm

NEW YORK (AP) - A car plowed into pedestrians on a New York City sidewalk for the fourth time in two days, hurting four people and raising the toll to nearly two dozen victims from the strange spate of wrecks.

Saturday's accident in Brooklyn's Flatbush neighborhood, which injured two toddlers, came a day after cars veered onto sidewalks at three locations in Manhattan, hitting a total of 18 people. Three were hospitalized in serious condition; 11 others were treated for less serious injuries.

Witnesses to Saturday's accident said the car crashed into two children at play on the sidewalk, where they lay bleeding after being hit.

3. Cars have license plates, drivers have licenses -- thus, those responsible can actually be found
Big big difference.

4. Okay, lets apply the rules that apply to car, to guns..
Do I need the government's permission to buy a car? No.

Do I need to buy the car from only certain people with licenses to sell cars? No.

Can I buy as many cars as I want each week/month/year? Yes

Do I have to be over a certain age to buy, own or possess a car? No (as long as it's kept on private property)

Can I buy small cars, big cars, slow cars, fast cars, cars that look dangerous? Yes

Do I need a license to buy a car? No

Do I need a license to operate a car? No (as long as I operate it on private property)

If I have a license from my state to operate a car on public property, is that license good anywhere in the country, for any car in the country? Yes.

How old do I need to be to get a license to operate a car on public property? Only 16 in most states.

Do I need to register a car that I own? No (as long as I keep it on private property)

Do I need a background check or waiting period to buy a car? No

Is my car held responsible if someone misuses it? No

Can the company that manufactured my car be sued if someone misuses it? No.
Do I need to "safe store" my car even though many are stolen and used for criminal purposes? No

Will I lose my driver's license if I violate the law with my car? Most likely not

Will I lose my right to own a car if I violate the law with my car? Most likely not

Hey I like that idea!!!

5. Can you carry your car around in your pocket?

Oops.

If you want to rob a store, will your car be useful for intimidating the cashier into handing over the loot?

Oops.

If you want to kill your wife and children, are you going to be sure they'll end up dead without risking harming yourself if you use a car?

Oops.

If you need to enforce your territorial rights in order to continue deriving income from drug trafficking, will speeding around the neighbourhood in your car intimidate potential rivals or witnesses?

Oops.

Is my car held responsible if someone misuses it? No

I give up. Your gun is? Which jurisdiction in the US is still applying medieval law?

6. So are you advocating banning concealable knives or
licensing knife owners? Unless I'm mistaken knives are often used in all of your scenarios.

10. Actually, most states do have laws regulating knives
usually by maximum blade size, some by simply banning all automatic or assisted opening knives, double edged blade knives, etc. It usually varies by region, so a knife that is perfectly legal in one city may get you arrested in one a few miles down the road.

12. and I don't know about states

-- although I know I've looked some up in the past -- but let us not forget that carrying a concealed *weapon*, not just firearm, is a subject of regulation. I believe knives qualify. I know they do where I'm at.

Also regulated are brass knuckes, sword canes, those rope & stick things ... spiked wristbands, where I'm at ...

13. Imagine that, and yet they are still used to kill people.

14. indeed, indeed

And just imagine: they have laws against killing people, too.

And yet people do it.

Where did you people come up with this utterly bizarre notion that laws are supposed to stop things from happening and people from making them happen??

It's an utterly bizarre notion that many of you seem quite firmly wed to, and I'd really like to know who's been filling your little heads with such nonsense, so I can scold him/her appropriately.

7. So no one ever steals a car and misuses it.
How do those licenses and license plates help then? If that's your big, big difference then you are real, real slow.

8. I'll tell you what does help
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 05:21 PM by iverglas

Where I'm at, it's illegal to leave keys in the car.

Keys in a car make it a whole lot easier to steal it.

Kinda like how leaving a firearm lying around unsecured makes it a whole lot easier to steal it.

Which is why where I'm at we have laws requiring safe/secure storage.

Kinda like how we have laws prohibiting leaving keys in a car ...

9. Yet car makers
are allowed to print the key code right there on the car (not all makers, mostly import makers..honda, toyota, mazda...and the cars they build for the big 3, which, if some would pull their head from their ass, completely explains why these makes are the most stolen) where anyone with a screw driver and some basic knowledge can create a key and drive away.

I am not countering your point at all, you just reminded me of one of my peeves.
