Will Brady / VPC succeed in pushing for another AWB?
Inauguration Day is coming folks, and our president-election, from what I've read, has already starting to lose the hearts and minds of gays and the anti-war-on-drugs group. I fear that he's going to go 180 degrees on his statement regarding the 2nd Amendment as well.

Anyway, do you think the gun control lobby will succeed in pushing for another cosmetic ban on rifles that make people shit their pants? I know this has been asked a lot of times before, but somehow I can't shake the feeling that it'll be the Clinton administration all over again (WRT gun laws).

1. Obama has always supported renewing AWB and as a member of Joyce's board he voted to fund
organizations that lobby for renewing AWB.

2. I've heard people on both sides of the divide refer to Obama as "Bush III"
But who knows? Our only hope is that Obama and the Congress will quite sensibly decide there are far more pressing issues facing the nation.

4. My guess (good as anyone elses)
Obama doesn't want a battle over guns being his top issue for first 180 days.

He is in the same place Clinton was at start of his first term.
Control over both houses and an agenda to push.

I think Obama will push stuff he considers more important: changing tax code, creating jobs, improving overall economy, hiring police, etc.

If push comes to shove he will sign the AWB. He isn't going to veto a Dem piece of legislation.
I think he is smart enough to know it will do no good and can only hurt the party.

So I see him in the middle:
He won't push it.
Behind the scenes he hopes Congress won't turn it into a big battle.
If it gets to his desk he will sign in.

5. If they push another AWB we will lose the house and Senate
Edited on Tue Jan-06-09 05:38 PM by rangersmith82
The vote for the original ban was tied, only to then be passed by Vice President Gore.

People had no real internet back then, and there will be a backlash for a repeat of a law that did nothing but ban cosmetic features for 10 years.

No way are they gonna be able to ban them completely, there are too many pro gun Democratic Senators that will joining the Republicans against a new AWB.

Also there is the Heller decision, that may help us gun owners.

I can see the headlines now.....

President more concerned about taking your guns that getting your jobs back.

Any new Gun laws will be suicide for our party, if the President elect really wants to fix our country, he better use his head and leave the guns alone.

Any new AWB will be the end of our control in the house and senate come 2010.

7. I agree with you
I agree with you.

Obama and the Democratic party both espouse a new assault weapon bill.

But I don't think Obama will pick this fight if he can avoid it. Perhaps he'll save it for his second term.

6. Senator Reid has indicated that he does NOT support another "assault weapon" fraud...
and I am hoping that if the issue comes up, he keeps it off the President's desk.

Someone posted the following letter from Senator Reid last year, and it bears repeating here:

March 12, 2007

Mr. xxxx xxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Dear Mr. xxxxxxx:

Thank you for contacting me about the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act (H.R. 1022). I appreciate hearing from you.

Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) re-introduced the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act on February 13, 2007. This legislation would ban the transfer, possession, or manufacture of semiautomatic assault weapons and high capacity ammunition feeding devices for a ten year period. It has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for review.

I do not support the reauthorization of the assault weapons ban because studies have not demonstrated that it has any effect on reducing crime. I voted against the original assault weapons ban when it came before the Senate in 1993. I also voted against an effort to reauthorize the ban in 2004. Please be assured that I will keep your concerns in mind should I have the opportunity to review H.R. 1022 or related legislation in the Senate.

As a gun owner, I believe that law abiding citizens have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms. We must work to protect this right by enforcing gun safety laws that keep guns away from terrorists and criminals. The rights of responsible gun owners should not be compromised by individuals who use firearms to commit crimes. The overwhelming majority of Nevadan gun owners use their guns safely, and you may be certain that I will use my leadership position to work in a bipartisan fashion to preserve their rights.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. For more information about my work for Nevada, my role in the United States Senate Leadership, or to subscribe to regular e-mail updates on the issues that interest you, please visit my Web site at http://reid.senate.gov . I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

My best wishes to you.

Sincerely,

HARRY REID
United States Senator

I'm not saying a new AWB couldn't happen. I do believe, however, that we are in a FAR stronger position to prevent such idiocy than we were in 1989 or 1994.

8. I strongly doubt it...

(1) Semi-auto carbines are owned by many millions of Americans, now too big a constituency to piss off;
(2) More and more Democrats are asking: "why should we let a GOP-organized, GOP-run outfit (the Bradys) sit in our Party's pilot house and make policy?";
(3) MSM, by far the strongest element within the gun-control lobby, is becoming less persuasive and more hectoring;
(4) Semi-auto carbines will in my lifetime supplant traditional bolt-action hunting rifles in the field (even the Bradys claim they don't want to ban hunting rifles); and
(5) Any such ban, if enacted, would result in very strong court challenges in the wake of Heller, and would cause a protracted battle in which Second Amendment advocates, the GOP, and perhaps a substantial number of Democrats will power-up to challenge sponsors of and voters for such legislation.
