Even More Voices For Gun Control
We've seen the sort of ugly racist scum (Lott, Hatch, Nugent, Pratt, Duke, etc.) who push the dishonest "gun rights" agenda...

Here's more on the courageous decent Americans pushing for gun control.

1. Luis Gutierrez
"During his five terms in the U.S. House, Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez has worked to establish himself as an effective legislator and energetic spokesman on behalf of his constituents in Illinois' Fourth District.  At the same time, Gutierrez' tireless leadership championing the causes of the Latino and immigrant communities has led to greater responsibilities within the U.S. Congress and has earned him widespread acclaim throughout the country-- culminating in his selection as the most admired Latino leader in the country, according to a recent nationwide survey.
As the first Latino to be elected to Congress from the Midwest, Gutierrez sought opportunities to address long-standing needs facing the immigrant community in his diverse Congressional district, which is home to Chicago's large and established communities of immigrants from Eastern Europe as well Latin America.  During his first term in office, he led the fight to increase citizenship education and English language proficiency programs for newly-arrived immigrants.
In Chicago, he has held citizenship workshops offering comprehensive assistance to prospective citizens.  He was the first member of Congress to gain permission from the Immigration and Naturalization Service to complete and transmit such documents in bulk.  His workshops have helped more than 25,000 people take the first steps toward citizenship.  Other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have replicated his workshops in their home districts.
After the Republican take-over of Congress following the 1994 elections-- and the unveiling of the GOP's harsh, anti-immigrant agenda-- Gutierrez emerged as one of the most vocal and active defenders of the rights of legal immigrants, and as one of the most staunch opponents of legislation  aimed at denying immigrants their access to protections and benefits.  As chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' Task Force on Naturalization and Citizenship, Gutierrez gained national recognition for his efforts to prevent the break-up of immigrants' families and led efforts to compel the INS to eliminate its massive backlog of citizenship applications.
Immigrants' rights advocates have regularly lobbied members of  Congress to endorse  legislation drafted and introduced by Gutierrez.  For example, rallies were held in cities throughout the U.S. to demonstrate grass-roots backing for the "Fairness for Immigrants Act," his bill calling for the full restoration of benefits denied to legal immigrants as a result of the 1996 welfare reform bill.  Similar support has been shown for Gutierrez' legislation to protect immigrants from Central America who fled civil wars and political violence in Central America during the late 1980s and early '90s.  As many as 650,000 individuals from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti would benefit from his bill.  More than one hundred House members agreed to co-sponsor it.
Additional pieces of legislation introduced by Gutierrez include a bill to reinstate the Section 245(i) visa program, to keep family members united while an individual awaits the awarding of a visa; and a bill to crack-down on firms that overcharge their customers-- in particular, consumers in the Mexican-American community-- sending money via international wire transfers.
During the 107th Congress, Gutierrez introduced H.R. 500, a bill to grant legal status to immigrants without documentation who are living in-- and making enormous contributions to-- the United States.  This comprehensive legalization bill has gained widespread support among grass-roots groups, interfaith religious organizations and labor unions throughout the country.
Gutierrez has consistently pushed for effective legislation to stop crime and gun-related violence.  He was an original sponsor of legislation  to ban nineteen types of semi-automatic assault weapons and introduced a bill to ban the cheap, easily-concealed guns known as "Saturday Night Specials"--  one of the most aggressive pieces of gun safety measures put before the House.
As a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, he helped pass landmark legislation to provide priority health care to veterans of the Persian Gulf War during his first term and was awarded by the Vietnam Veterans of America as "Legislator of the Year."  During 1999, he passed legislation to ensure that women veterans receive treatment and care for incidents of sexual abuse that occurred while they were in the military."

And did I mention he's for gun control?

21. Silly Goose, Nazis didn't believe in gun rights for Jews
It is a well established fact that the NSDAP (Nazis) when in power banned Jews from possessing and carrying firearms. In the late 20s the ownership of weapons or ammunition required a government permis. In the early 30s waiting periods were placed on all purchases. And by 1938 a law was passed prohibited Jews from owning any kind of guns or ammunition, as well as bayonets and other stabbing weapons. All Jews were ordered to surrender their weapons and ammunition to the local police. Any firearms and ammunition found by authorities were subject to seizure and the owner would be punished by 5 years in prison.

After Jews were rounded up and packed in the ghettos like sardines, they were likewise prohibited from owning any kind of weapon. Despite the fact they were outnumbered and outgunned, Jews and sympathetic people smuggled weapons in to Warsaw that were used in the uprising in 1943. During the uprising in the ghetto a German soldier was hear crying "Juden haben waffen! Juden haben waffen!" (the Jews have arms) as he retreated from the fighting. (Source Israel Gutman Resistance: the Warsaw Ghetto uprising New York: Houghton Mifflin.1994.207 A publication of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum) Clearly during Nazi Germany the government tightly controlled the ownership of weapons by Jews and other undesirable elements and expected them to be helpless and unable to resist oppression.

So Mr. Benchley, for you to suggest that the Nazi period of Germany was a model for your hated 'gun rights' is not only historically incorrect, but your snide denial of history is insulting to the memory of people who died in the Holocaust. The Jews were deprived of weapons, and and the Nazis thought they were unable to resist oppression, but their indomitable spirit led them to try. They did aquire arms and they did fight back.

I don't know whether your just ignorant of history of purposefully insulting, but in either case you should watch your mouth.

4. Charles A. Gonzalez
"In November 2002, Charles A. Gonzalez was elected to a third term in the United States Congress as the Representative from the 20th Congressional District of Texas.

Congressman Gonzalez is a member of the New Democrats and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. As a Freshman in the 106th Congress, Congressman Gonzalez was elected Vice President of his class. Since 1999, Congressman Gonzalez has served as a Texas Regional Whip for the Democratic Caucus and as Chair of the Hispanic Caucus Civil Rights Task Force.

It was through the Civil Rights Task Force that Congressman Gonzalez took a lead role in the 2000 decennial census, encouraging all Americans to complete and return their census forms. Recognizing his leadership on the census for the Hispanic Caucus, the House Democratic Leadership selected Congressman Gonzalez to also Co-Chair the Democratic Caucus Census Task Force. Most recently, the Congressman was appointed to Co-Chair the Democratic Caucus Special Committee on Election Reform and the Democratic National Committee's Voting Rights Institute, an initiative to ensure that all local, state and federal elections are conducted in compliance with civil rights laws, voting rights laws, and election laws.

As a Member of the House Financial Services Committee, Congressman Gonzalez serves on the Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, and Government Sponsored Enterprises, the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit, and the Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy, Technology, and Economic Growth.

Congressman Gonzalez is also a member of the House Small Business Committee where he serves on the Subcommittee on Workforce, Empowerment, and Government Programs, and the Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform and Oversight. As a member of this Committee, Congressman Gonzalez made it a priority to secure approval and funding for a Women's Business Center to be located in San Antonio. As a Member of several Congressional Task Forces, including Education, Defense, Financial Services, Business and Economic Development, and Telecommunications, as well as the Air Force Caucus, the Infrastructure and Transportation Caucus, and the Missing and Exploited Children Caucus, Congressman Gonzalez is better able to focus his efforts on the issues that matter most to his constituents in San Antonio.

Charles Gonzalez is a San Antonio native. A graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School in San Antonio, Gonzalez received a bachelor of Arts degree in Government from the University of Texas at Austin and then received a Juris Doctorate degree from St. Mary's School of Law in San Antonio.

After spending one year as a 5th grade teacher at Kindred Elementary in the South San Antonio Independent School District, and before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Charlie Gonzalez served most of his career in the legal field. He was a lawyer in private practice from 1972 to 1982, a Municipal Court Judge, and an elected County Court at Law Judge from 1983 until 1987. He then served as an elected District Judge from 1989 to 1997.

As a sitting judge, Gonzalez was recognized as one of the highest rated trial judges. Credited with introducing the latest technological advances into the courtroom and for streamlining court dockets, Judge Gonzalez acknowledged the problematic backlog of domestic violence cases and proposed a system of courts to exclusively handle domestic violence cases. A recognized ardent mediator, Judge Gonzalez was also instrumental in further streamlining the dockets by utilizing mediation as an alternative to costly litigation. In the fall of 1997, Gonzalez resigned his seat on the bench to seek the office of United States Congressman for the 20th district of Texas."

And he's for gun control.

5. Previous "voices" for gun control
Soviet Union - In 1929 the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, approximately 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Turkey - In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915-1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany - In 1938, Germany established gun control and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, gentiles, and others, who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

China - In 1935 China established gun control and from 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Guatemala - In 1964 Guatemala established gun control and from 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Uganda - In 1970 Uganda established gun control and from 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia - In 1956 Cambodia established gun control and from 1975 to 1977, one million "educated" people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

That places total victims who lost their lives because of gun control at approximately 56 million in the last century.
Since we should learn from the mistakes of history, the next time we hear "voices" in favor of gun control, find out which group of citizens they wish to have exterminated.

The government authorized the sale.
Yes, they sold them. Pretty much fact since everyone agrees they did. The problem is VPC tries to distort the fact that the Government told them to sell the guns. Just like the government sold the stingers.

If I were running a business and the Gov came to me and said, "Country y is a good friend that needs guns to fight the soviets." It would have been seen as pro communist not to sell them in the cold war.

No one is disputing the fact, they are disputing the reasons. Only saying that they sold guns to Osama and not tell the reasons or the time frame is deliberatly misleading, but I guess thats ok when it is gun control people doing it.

62. Nobody can...the "gun rights" crowd isn't fooling anyone
"Confederate flags were in abundance. At least 10 tables sold some rendition of the flag. The first thing I encountered walking in was the table for the Dixie Cotton Exchange. It was actually three tables abreast, laden with signs, bumper stickers, and license plates that revered the South, the Confederacy, the Stars and Bars.
And they had a sideline. Nazi paraphernalia. Insignia, patches, flags, medals, daggers, helmets and rank chevrons. Side by side with the Confederate flags, there was a message there. The sign outside that prohibited cameras and camcorders began to make sense. One bumper sticker stood out at another stand. You have your "X" (a reference to the "X" hats popular after the film Malcolm X), and I have mine, with a picture of the Confederate battle flag, its stars and bars arranged in their "X".
Gun fanatics do not want their public image tarred with overt racism; it's bad politics. But I've never been to a "gun event" where white supremacy, both the Aryan and Confederate variety, wasn't on open display. No generalizations, just my own experience. "

http://www.mindspring.com/~scpoint/point/0002/p10.html

"Several Nazi flags are in evidence at the gun show, and though most are displayed as militaria, one has to wonder who--other than Marge Schott--might want to buy a Nazi flag. There are some more obvious examples of bigotry. A grim-looking vendor near the front of one of the fairgrounds buildings sits behind piles of material that he is selling which include copies of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. At another table one can purchase the infamous Turner Diaries, which merely labeling "racist" seems not to do them justice. And several exhibitors have copies of the weekly newspaper, The Spotlight, published by the blatantly anti-Semitic organization The Liberty Lobby, which also helped to fund the Institute for Historical Review, a group that denies the Holocaust ever happened. "

http://www.adl.org/mwd/gunshow.asp

“Another issue that started to become more apparent was that, within the pro-gun circles, the rhetoric and paraphernalia were often conflated with pro-American jingoism, and more importantly, white supremacy. The myth-like history of guns in America has fueled the white supremacy movements, anti-government movements, and pro-gun faiths. Thus, as we discuss gun legislation, I am constantly amazed at the covert, and often overt, racism that is purported in support of gun ownership .”

So find us one that says that....I find it hilarious that they're all too lazy and stupid to do anything but parrot the NRA's code words.. Like this:

"The so-called gun control bill enacted by the government is nothing but anti-self defense laws designed to disarm law abiding citizens. The right to own guns as guaranteed by the 2nd amendment to the United States Constitution must be protected. Gun ownership is NOT a privilege, it’s a CONSTITUTIONALLY PROTECTED RIGHT!!! The Texas Knights work to completely restore the right of all law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms."

89. Silly goose, the Ku Kluckers does not believe in gun rights for minorities
I find it hilarious that they're all too lazy and stupid to do anything but parrot the NRA's code words..

I would think that everyone on this board takes the word of the Ku Kluck Klan with a grain of salt. The truth is that the Kluckers are a racial supremacy movement interested in white power.

The deception on the part of the Kluckers to become relevant into today's world is the grooming of their public face. They pretend to be not a racial supremacy movement, but a less-noxious racial sepraratist movement. Part of this campaign of deception is the softening of their political views. They go to great lenghts to appear moderate, they take care to not show their true proclivities. The reality of the Klucker is when they say they believe in the rights of minorities, they lie. The plain truth is that they do not believe in the rights of minorities at all. They do not believe in gun rights for anyone except 'ayrans' and they believe in gun control for minorities, homosexuals and even to political progressives.

Benchley, when you claim that the Ku Kluck Klan believes in gun rights for minorities, you are spreading their particularly pernicious lie for them! Do not believe them! Do not repeat their lie that they support gun rights for all people. They are using you!

Why pretty much every progressive Democrat that can be found is for gun control? (Even Dean is closer to my position than the RKBA crowd's.)

Or why all these racists trumpet gun rights?

Yup....absolutely true.

"If that statement does not shout racism, you need to find a dictionary."
That statement only points out the rather obvious racism apparent when looks at the national spokespeople for "gun rights". You know, folks like Larry Pratt, Ted Nugent and Jeff Cooper..

"So, there are black, gay, jew and women gun nuts."

PS, calling a group racist means all members of said group are racist, including gun rights people.

"calling a group racist means all members of said group are racist"
Wow....so what does it mean when the gun owners' largest group is headed by racists, and the second largest group is headed by racists, and there's not a word of complaint about that racism on record from gun owners, but there is lots of bitching and complaining by gun owners whenever the racism of those leaders is accurately pointed out in public?

And what does it mean when every group that is synonymous with racism is spouting this "gun rights" gibberish almost word for word?

And what does it mean when nearly every group actively opposed to racism and working FOR progress, tolerance or decency is on the gun owners' group's enemies list?

"Interesting you dont see that you call all gun rights people racists since you do it constantly."
Gee, I'm sure somebody can produce some gun rights politician or spokesperson who isn't racist or lunatic. But it's funny how everytime I invite this group to produce a progressive Democrat in public life who is opposed to gun control, we come up blank. The list of Democrats who were pro-gun petered out after six names...one of those was Dean, who is a lot closer to my position than that of the RKBA crowd here, two more were Zell Miller-style DINOs, and to get to the sixth we had to go down to the state legislature level.

Meanwhile, I've had no problem coming up with at least thirty progressive Democrats in public life who are for gun control and a whole bunch of other good things...and at least sixty corrupt or racist Republican imbeciles peddling gun rights who oppose pretty much everything useful or decent.

BIGOTRY

Do not post racist, sexist, homophobic, ethnic, anti-religious, or anti-atheist bigotry. Unambiguous expressions of bigotry will be deleted, and will often result in the immediate banning of the individual responsible.

If it is not clear whether a comment is bigoted, we will generally give the benefit of the doubt and assume the least-bigoted interpretation. However, individuals who repeatedly post borderline-bigoted comments will be considered bigots and will be removed.

9. This is an old, tired NRA canard.
"Germany - In 1938, Germany established gun control and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, the mentally ill, gentiles, and others, who were unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated."

Please...to think that for one instant that Europe's Jew, Roma, homosexuals (including Hitler henchman Ernest Roehm) and the mentally ill would rise up to defend theirselves against the Nazis is ludicrous. In fact the whole premise is ludicrous. That a minority in a repressive totalitarian state can rise up, with a hand full of rusty shotguns, antiquated rifles and cheap handguns, and defend themselves is Hollywood romanticism. It'd never happen. And don't hand me that crap about two handguns and the Jews of the Warsaw ghetto, I've heard it before.

We will never know, because they never had a chance to prove or disprove it.
I am pretty certain though that if armed, they would have had a better chance than they did in the gas chambers!

To add to this, if armed, they might have been able to get out of the country having only to stand equally armed against a few border guards, and not the whole army.

51. So why do gun drops in the war
We dropped thousands of guns, some only to be used once so to get what the Germans had. To think that an oppressed group of people would still be oppressed if armed with guns is crazy. That is the point of gun drops, to arm people in the war.

And it wasnt just 2 guns

90. To partisans
Dedicated partisans fighting against the germans from within France, Yugoslavia, Greece and Italy. Thats who we dropped guns to. And then mostly through the SOE division of Britains war time services.

We didn't drop them to Jews and any notion of arming jews to fight against the Germans pre-1939 is bogus. Your forgetting that Europe isn't like the US in that every person owns a gun. They don't feel that need to have a firearm in their house. The psyche of the jews during this period is very complex. You could also ask why we didn't bomb the camps hoping to let some escape? hy they didn't try to overpower the guards in the camps?

Arming people to overthrow dangerous regimes is a trickey subject. The cause must be absolute and the resolve also such. There is no turning back and it must be wholesale. I just don't buy it that we need to be armed for the sake against a rouge government in America coming to power. Its not the 18th Century anymore.

6. After lobbying by a gun-owning friend I've reconsidered current law.
After a friend, who is a devoted Democrat, gun owner and opponent of the NRA, set me straight, the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban is a "paper tigar" at best and a recruiting tool for the right at best. The National Firearms Act of 1934 is still the most effective tool in restricting automatic weapons ownership. Link

8. Jane Harman
"Elected to a fifth term in 2002, Harman was appointed by the House Democratic leadership to serve as Ranking Member on the Intelligence Committee for the 108th Congress. And at the request of the House Speaker and Minority Leader, she previously helped spearhead all House actions in response to the September 11 attacks as Ranking Member on the panel's Subcommittee on Terrorism and Homeland Security. Harman was also appointed to the new House Select Committee on Homeland Security.

Harman's national security expertise and ability to articulate issues clearly have made her a frequent guest on national news programs, including Meet the Press, Face the Nation, Larry King Live, Nightline and Wolf Blitzer Reports. Her written commentaries have appeared in The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and other major publications.

Throughout her career, Jane Harman has fought for a clean and healthy environment, and to end permanently the threat of oil drilling along California's coast and in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She is a long-time supporter of Congressional efforts to put America on the path of greater energy independence and to expand the use of clean energy technologies.

As an attorney and as an elected official, Harman has been an unwavering supporter of a woman's right to choose and of equal rights and opportunities for all Americans, regardless of age, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.

In 1999, Harman was named Regents' Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she taught public policy and international relations. Earlier in her career, she served as special counsel to the Defense Department, deputy cabinet secretary for President Carter, and chief counsel and staff director of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights."

26. William Lacy Clay
William Lacy Clay was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives in 2000 and was chosen as President of the incoming Democratic freshman class. He currently serves on the Committee on Government Reform and is the ranking minority member on the Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental Relations and the Census. He also sits on the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice, Drug Policy and Human Resources. On the Financial Services Committee, he serves on the Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government Sponsored Enterprises and the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity.
During his 17 years in the Missouri House and Senate, Lacy Clay worked tirelessly on behalf of Missouri families, workers, the disabled and the elderly. He sponsored and passed legislation, which ranged from education to health care to civil rights. He passed a bill establishing the Rosa Parks Highway in St. Louis County and another requiring that history teachers include information about the history of the Civil Rights Movement in America in their curriculum.
Near the end of this tenure in the Missouri Senate, he played an instrumental role in bringing an equitable end to the 30-year-old, court-ordered desegregation case in the St. Louis Public Schools.
In 1999, he successfully passed measures that allowed welfare recipients to earn higher wages without losing benefits when making the transition from welfare to work, and he created the Family Development Accounts for low-income families to save money for education, job training, home ownership, home improvement or small business capitalization.
He also established Missouri’s hate crime law covering crimes motivated by race or religion, which he eventually expanded to include crimes against individuals because of their sexual orientation, gender, or disability. Additionally, hundreds of young people are receiving job training through YouthBuild, a program enacted under his Youth Opportunities and Violence Prevention Act.
Congressman Clay is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Progressive Caucus and serves on the boards of his father’s William L. Clay Scholarship and Research Fund and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. "

28. Michael Everett Capuano
"Michael Everett Capuano is currently serving his third term as a Representative in Congress for Massachusetts' historic Eighth District. He was first elected to this office in November of 1998. The Eighth Congressional District includes Cambridge, Somerville, Chelsea and approximately 70% of Boston.
Congressman Capuano is a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, including the Subcommitte on Aviation and the Subcommittee on Highways & Transit; and the House Committee on Financial Services, including the Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance, & Government Sponsored Enterprises and the Subcommittee on Housing & Community Opportunity. He also serves on the House Democratic Leadership team as a Regional Whip, an Assistant Whip and as a member of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
While in the Congress, Mike has been a strong voice for residents of the 8th district. He has searched for ways to create more affordable housing opportunities for constituents and fought against cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) budget that would unfairly impact those most in need of assistance.
Mike succeeded in providing assistance for the development of new intergenerational housing for grandparents raising their grandchildren and in increasing the value of certain section 8 vouchers to offset rising housing costs. He also filed legislation to assist women who are victims of rape during times of conflict or war. Now, $1 million goes toward the development of an international rape-counseling program.
Mike created and co-chairs the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Community Health Centers and was successful in attaching anti-redlining provisions to disaster insurance legislation. Rep. Capuano also secured funding for a variety of 8th district projects. Some of these include money to: improve the Muddy River, continue planning for the Urban Ring, purchase technology for Roxbury Community College, continue funding the empowerment zone, and to expand the Fenway Community Health Center's HIV prevention, mental health and substance abuse programs.
Mike serves on a number of Congressional Caucuses. Some of these include: Human Rights, Coast Guard, Congressional Member Organization for the Arts, Census, Congressional Friends of Human Rights Monitors, Korea, Medicare, Biomedical, Community Health Centers, Empowerment Zone and Enterprise Community; Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, and the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus. 29. Jim McGreevey
"James E. McGreevey was elected the 51st governor of the State of New Jersey November 6, 2001, and took the oath of office January 15, 2002. His term runs until noon on January 17, 2006.
In his first year as the State's Chief Executive, Governor McGreevey restored fiscal responsibility to State government, worked to improve New Jersey's educational system and strengthened security.
Through bipartisan efforts, the Governor balanced the State budget, despite confronting the largest deficit in State history. The budget, which was balanced without raising the sales or income tax, maintained State aid levels for local governments and school districts and funded investments in education, cancer care and research, infrastructure development and homeland security.
Governor McGreevey, who established a "Reading Coaches" program to strengthen literacy, has worked hard to enable students to read at grade level or better by the end of the third grade. He also developed several "Career Academies" in partnership with the business community to provide students with the skills needed to compete in the 21st century economy.
In addition, the Governor is working with the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education's Long Range Planning Committee to restructure the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Rutgers University and New Jersey Institute of Technology into a statewide research university system.
To strengthen New Jersey's economy, Governor McGreevey re-configured Prosperity New Jersey to create a partnership between the private sector, the research university community and the State to leverage New Jersey's strengths and develop the Garden State as the Innovation State.
His Administration is overseeing an $8.6 billion school construction program, which represents an unprecedented investment in the economy, as well as New Jersey communities and children. In addition, the State is investing $2 billion in a Transportation Capital Program which will provide substantial infrastructure support and assistance for local governments.
Governor McGreevey also has promoted "business incubators" which foster continued growth in the new economy, by providing start-up and small firms with a services to help them succeed.
Prior to being elected Governor in November 2001, McGreevey was the Mayor of Woodbridge, New Jersey's sixth largest municipality. Elected Mayor in 1991, his accomplishments included starting a public/private partnership that brought more than 6,000 new jobs and millions in new investment into the town. His tenure saw a revitalized business district, a 40 percent reduction in the crime rate since 1991, stabilized property taxes, and improved financial management. Under his leadership, Woodbridge became a leader in public health initiatives, which include cancer screenings and inoculations for children. "

And he's for gun control.

McGreevey's idiotic GOP opponent in 2000, Bret Schundler, won the Republican primary by promising a CCW law and an end to the assault weapons ban. By mid-July, Schundler was denying he had ever mentioned any such thing (too bad for him, there was video tape) and by mid-October Schundler was wandering around the Garden State promising to write a book after the election detailing how he had been stabbed in the back by his own party.

32. Marty Meehan
"In nine years in Congress, Congressman Marty Meehan has emerged as a national leader on a variety of issues and a steadfast advocate for the people of his district. He has led the fight to reform our nation's campaign finance laws and the battle to protect our children from tobacco. Moreover, he has been a tireless advocate for economic development and smart growth strategies across the Fifth Congressional District of Massachusetts.

A resident of Lowell, Marty has represented the Fifth Congressional District of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1993. He is a member of both the House Armed Services and Judiciary Committees. In addition to reforming our campaign finance laws and protecting kids from tobacco, Marty's top priorities include maintaining a balanced federal budget, preserving Medicare and Social Security, supporting and strengthening our Armed Forces, working to make our communities clean and crime-free for families, and providing people -- both young and old -- the education they need to compete in a global workplace.

As the lead Democratic sponsor of the "Shays-Meehan-McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2002," Marty is spearheading the effort to clean up our election system and reduce the influence of special interests on Capitol Hill. The Shays-Meehan-McCain-Feingold reform bill received the endorsement of Common Cause, the League of Women Voters, the American Association of Retired Persons, and other public interest organizations, as well as newspaper editorial boards across the country.

Marty is co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Task Force on Tobacco and Health and widely recognized as one of the tobacco industry's harshest critics. In December of 1994, he authored a 111-page prosecution memorandum outlining, for the first time, criminal violations by tobacco companies and their executives. Marty's detailed memo has served as the foundation for many of the U.S. Justice Department's investigations into and litigation against Big Tobacco. In the 105th Congress, Marty introduced the bipartisan "No Tobacco for Kids Act," which would establish a comprehensive national tobacco control policy aimed at protecting children, reducingtobacco use, and improving public health. In 1999, Marty was the co-author of the leading bipartisan legislation to allocate funds from the multi-state tobacco settlement towards programs to protect children from tobacco use.

Marty earned his reputation as a tough law enforcer as the Massachusetts Deputy Secretary of State for Securities and Corporations from 1986 to 1990. The Boston Globe reported, "During Meehan's four years as Deputy Secretary, the Securities Division from being a frequent embarrassment to gaining a national reputation as hard-hitting and activist." The Boston Herald credited him with "changing the state securities and corporations division from what some called a nest of political influence into one of the nation's leading state securities investigators." Mike earned bachelor's degrees in Biological Sciences and Spanish, and a master's degree in Education from San Jose State University. In his career as an educator, Mike was a science teacher, served as a principal at two public schools and conducted educational research at Stanford University.
Mike is dedicated to passing a responsible budget that pays down our national debt, and revitalizes our economy, while protecting top priorities such as Social Security, Medicare, and public education. As a member of the influential Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, Mike is working hard to make sure the Silicon Valley gets its fair share of federal transportation funding to make the daily commute safer and more efficient for the residents of our fast-growing region.
Mike has been selected by his Democratic colleagues to serve as the Regional Whip for Northern California, Hawaii, American Samoa and Guam. As Regional Whip, Mike works with the Democratic Leadership by communicating legislative priorities and strategies to members within his region. Mike also serves as Vice Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and continues to be a strong voice for the cause of social justice, tolerance and civil rights."

And he's for gun control.

52. Betty McCollum
"A native of South St. Paul, Betty McCollum is a Democrat serving her second term in Congress representing Minnesota's Fourth District. With her election in 2000, McCollum became only the second Minnesota woman elected to Congress since statehood in 1858. The district she represents includes Minnesota's capital city, St. Paul, Ramsey County, northern Dakota County as well as western Washington County.

Throughout her public life, Betty McCollum has championed excellence in education, protecting the environment, and expanding health care access. In Congress, she has been an outspoken leader for fully funding special education, protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), and promoting women's health care.

McCollum is a member of the Education and Workforce Committee and a fierce advocate for equal opportunity in higher education. She represents thousands of students, faculty and staff from the more than ten colleges and universities located in the Fourth District. Rep. McCollum's committee assignment also provides her with a platform to fight for pension protections, as well as defend workers' rights and collective bargaining guarantees.

In the 108th Congress, McCollum has taken a seat on the International Relations Committee, bringing a Minnesota perspective to U.S. foreign policy. Here she will continue her work to promote U.S. leadership in confronting the HIV/AIDS pandemic and global climate change, while emphasizing human rights and the peaceful resolution of regional conflicts.

Additionally, Congresswoman McCollum serves on the Resources Committee. Democratic leaders asked McCollum to continue her work on the committee because of her strong commitment to protecting the environment. With her appointment to the Resources Committee, McCollum now enjoys the rare distinction of holding three committee assignments.

Presently, McCollum holds three prestigious positions within the House Democratic Caucus. In 2002, McCollum was elected to serve as regional whip and was selected by the House Democratic Whip for the senior whip team for the 108th Congress. McCollum was also appointed last year by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to serve as a member of the Democratic Steering Committee. In 2001, Congresswoman McCollum was appointed to represent House Democrats on the National Council on the Arts, the advisory board of the National Endowment for the Arts. McCollum was reappointed the National Council on the Arts in 2003."

And she's for gun control.

85. You didn't know?
"Derogatory racial remarks from rocker Ted Nugent have cost him a gig at the Muskegon Summer Celebration.

Festival officials canceled Nugent's concert following an interview last week with two Denver disc jockeys in which the DJs say he used slurs for Asians and blacks. The festival was scrambling to find a replacement."
