Hollywood loves spreading false informaiton about guns.
http://hamptonroads.com/2009/03/hollywood-vigilante-pic-mocks-virginia-gun-law

The comment is part of the dialogue in Punisher: War Zone, a 2008 film based on the Marvel Comics character that was released on DVD last week.

While discussing weapons with his supplier, Linus “Microchip” Lieberman (actor Wayne Knight, perhaps best known for his portrayal of the Newman character on the popular 1990s sitcom Seinfeld), Punisher (played by British actor Ray Stevenson) asks about how the guns were acquired.

His supplier responds that it is gun show season in Virginia, and quips “no background check, no problem.”

The so-called gun show loophole refers to a provision in state law requiring licensed dealers to perform criminal background checks on potential buyers before selling them a gun; that standard does not apply to sales between private individuals.

There is no "gun show loophole". Even if you believe that a background check should apply to all firearms transfers it would be more accurately called a "person to person" loophole.

Gun Dealer outside gunshow = background check
Gun Dealer @ gunshow = background check
Individual Sale outside gunshow = no background check
Individual Sale @ gunshow = no background check.

Despite the misleading line the issue is hardly a VA issue.
Only 5 states require all private transactions go through an FFL.
Only 4 more require an FFL for private handgun sales.

1. And we don't want to get into...
the way they handle firearms. I once bought a used revolver that I had to take to a gunsmith for repair because some idiot had watched too many movies where the hero opened and closed the cylinder of his revolver by flicking his wrist.

They do have some really neat weapons though. For example, the fully auto assault rifles with 1000 round magazines.

2. And don't forget
Those invisibly small slimline spare magazines for those rare Hollywood handguns that actually need reloading. You know the ones where a scantily clad female heroine in a tube top and spray on jeans can conceal five or six of them about her person in easy to reach range, but have them completely undetectable?

4. Poor gun handling
Ohh, I am with you that, Spin. I lent my 60 year old double to a friend at the clay range and almost passed out when he started slamming the action shut. I took it away from him and let him use my 870. People don't realize that guns are crafted to very precise tolerances to handle thousands of rounds of extreme pressure. Repeated mishandling loosens those tolerances.

9. Damn - taken in by a Ed Brown painted matte black again....
...of course then again why would you need to cock a 1911 anyway given the short lightweight trigger pull? But hey criminals and heroes in Hollywood have all kind of strange techniques lost to the rest of us - starting with those sights on the side of the slide
