My crazy idea
If only the President would state that he intends to have the U.S. Government go into the ammo producing business. As private companies have been unable to keep up with demand and we have idle factories and high unemployment, the gov. is going to open some idle factories in high unemployment areas to produce ammo to compete with private makers. Once these factories are up and running, they can be sold to the private sector.
Watch those heads explode. All of the NRA types would become socialist.

2. Actually, it would help hugely even if they only supplied the military.
Frankly it makes sense from a national security perspective: why are we trusting the production of military basics like ammunition to private suppliers which can't keep up with demand?

3. Fantastic idea. But there would be too many cries about"blood in the streets"
But it is a great idea for a lot of different important reasons. Kudos.

5. No heads would explode...
I assume you are being sarcastic or attempting humor while mocking the NRA, but I won't go there with you. Gun owners would be appreciative of the assistance from the government as prices would decrease. No one would go socialist either because government intervention does not equate to socialism unless government compeletely replaces and abolishes private industry.

6. You know that and I know that
However, most right-wingers scream socialism when Obama does anything.

7. Nothing socialist about this.
As a strongly anti-tax capitalist, I'd like to see the government do much more of this, if they will do it efficiently. It would require public revenue to start up, but then it would generate large profits for the government and help curb the monstrous taxing and borrowing and printing they're doing now. But like the OP ackowledged, there should always, always be competition with the private sector, and if the government can no longer keep up, it must close up.

Maybe they'd also realize how unrealistic the ammo registration schemes are for a company trying to turn a profit.
