Monrovia - A former Los Angeles police boss pledged on Wednesday to rapidly build up a new crime fighting force in Liberia, where security agents have traditionally preyed on the people they were meant to protect.
The retraining of Liberian police officers is among the tasks of a United Nations force under an August peace deal meant to end nearly 14 years of violence in the West African country.
"This is not mission impossible; the possibility of having this mission accomplished will carry us a long way," said Mark Kroeker, a 32-year veteran of the Los Angeles police who now heads the UN police unit in Liberia.
