Homicide rates in California, 2007 by race/ethnic group versus U.S. rates
Homicide in California, 2007
Figures 3, 4, and 5 display homicide rates per 100,000 population for victims classified by gender, race/ethnic group, and age.

In 2007,
- The total homicide rate was 6.0 per 100,000 population.
- The male homicide rate was over four times that of the female homicide rate (9.9 vs. 2.1).
- The black homicide rate was over 12 times that of whites and over 3 times that of Hispanics (29.4 vs. 2.3 and 7.8, respectively).

Racial differences exist, with blacks disproportionately represented among homicide victims and offenders

In 2005, homicide victimization rates for blacks were 6 times higher than the rates for whites.

* * * * * * * * * * * *

In 2005, offending rates for blacks were more than 7 times higher than the rates for whites.

Any idea why CA's "black homicide {victimization} rate was over 12 times that of whites" while nationwide "homicide victimization rates for blacks were 6 times higher than the rates for whites"?

1. I suspect the disparity compared to national rates can be simply attributed to urban gang activity
The Bloods and Crips being the classic Los Angeles black gangs.

3. It may have something to do with the relatively recent recognition of "hispanic"...
...as distinct from "white" by the federal government.
