1 dead, 2 injured in motel shooting

NORFOLK - One man is dead and two were taken to a local hospital after an exchange of gunfire at at Norfolk motel early this morning.

Police spokesman Chris Amos said the shooting happened at the EconoLodge on North Military Highway around 2:15 a.m.

Amos said three males, at least one of them armed with a gun, knocked on the door to a room at the motel and then forced their way into a room where two people were staying. One of the people in the room was also armed, and gunshots were fired.

This one sounds fishy to me, although another story said the victim had a legal handgun (not sure what that means in Virginia). It will be interesting to see the results of the investigation.

I've never heard as much random gunfire as this place (I'm in Hampton Roads).Last 4th of July was unbelievable. Can't believe Manhattan gets a rep for this.

I agree it does sound suspicious likely more going on there (gangs, drugs, feud, ???).

Legal handgun would simply be one in possession of a non prohibited person (passes NICS check). There are no registrations, licenses, or permits to run afoul of.

Permit is required for CCW only. Open carry is legal w/ no permit.

BTW that is not a nice section of town.
