Police: Glendale man accidentally shoots self in buttocks
A Glendale man accidentally shot himself in the buttocks Sunday evening as he prepared to work, police said.

The 37-year-old, who works as a security guard, was readying to leave his home in the 4800 block of West Las Palmaritas Drive, said Detective Tara Simonson, a Glendale police spokeswoman.

5. Lol..
"When the man placed his gun in a holster in the small of his back, the gun unintentionally fired."

No, the careless idiot probably let his nose picker touch the boom button.

7. Not unheard of with "small of back" holsters
They don't call 'em "SOBs" for nothing.

But surely this was trained to safely handle firearms? And was therefore one of those people who can be trusted with a gun, unlike us proles?

8. Some holsters do a poor job.
I once owned a belt holster with a thumb-break retention system from a rather well-known maker of police duty holsters that would disengage the safety of a Browning Hi-Power during normal use. The first time it happened, I was startled to find the safety off and chided myself for forgetfulness. The second time it happened during the same range training session I did more checking and discovered that the thumb break was poorly designed in that the edge would snag the standard Browning safety and disengage it during activity no more strenuous than walking around.

It is one of those lessons that has lasted a long time. I "prove" any new holsters I buy with an unloaded pistol and wearing it around the house and doing routine stuff; bending, reaching, carrying, driving, etc to ensure the rig is safe, comfortable and secure before committing to using it with a loaded firearm.
