People on Terrorism Watch List Allowed to Buy Guns, Explosives

By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, June 22, 2009; 5:30 PM

People named on the government's terrorist watch list have successfully purchased firearms hundreds of times since 2004 , government investigators reported yesterday. In one case, a known or suspected terrorist was able to buy explosives, the Government Accountability Office reported.

U.S. lawmakers requested the audit to show how under federal law, people on the terrorist watch list can be stopped from boarding airplanes but not from buying guns. Under federal law, licensed firearms dealers must request an FBI background check for buyers but cannot legally stop purchases solely because individuals are on the watch list. The study found that people on the list purchased guns 865 times -- out of 963 attempts -- over a five-year period ending in February....

....Citing a "terror gap," Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and Reps. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) and Robert C. Scott (D-Va.) released the study, and Lautenberg introduced legislation today to give the U.S. attorney general authority to stop the sale of guns or explosives to terrorists.

"The special interest gun lobby has so twisted our nation's laws that the rights of terrorists are placed above the safety of everyday Americans," Lautenberg said in a written statement, "The current law simply defies common sense."

Senator Lautenberg's office explains it all for you:

2. Isn't there something like 3 million people on the "teruh" watch list?
Do you honestly think one out of 100 people is a terrorist?

Are you aware that once on the list it is virtually impossible to get off the list. That at one time or another senators, police chiefs, even AIRLINE pilots were on the the terra list.

They are utterly stupid.

Does it concern you that the govt can put you on a list based on no evidence. Then based on that list curb your civil liberties. Worse nobody even know how to get off the list.

MSNBC did a report on a pilot (with no criminal record) who almost lost his job because he was put on the terra list. Come on the thing is a joke.

3. Didn't you already start a thread about this?
Yeah, this one: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=118x231607

Do we really need a second thread about how dumb this idea is?

5. That was Lautenberg's announcement of the (then) upcoming report
Today, the actual report was issued, along with the press release from one of Lautenberg's staff.

Will read the report, and get back later.

4. The "watch list" has been turned into a political hit list by Bush Co. It needs to be scrapped.

Could you imagine if this list was used to bar people from voting?

Do you realize that the NAME alone is used on that list? How many people have been barred from flying by having a name in common with a suspected terrorist of someone on BushCo's personal no fly list?
