One dead after botched home invasion (Warning: Disturbing story)
Edited on Fri Jun-26-09 09:10 PM by Fire_Medic_Dave
Deputies say at least one gunman was killed in an early-morning home invasion near Wagram.

Anthony Martin, of Kale Street in Wagram, was shot to death in the failed robbery attempt while two others masked men fled, according to Shep Jones. The sheriff's department did not have Martin's age.

Jones said the trio entered the home of 62-year Edmond Cooper at 23296 Wagram Street at about 12:30 a.m. through the back door, which had been left unlocked.

Debbie Cooper, Edmond's wife, was still up and a suspect knocked her out by striking her over the head. The men then entered the room of the Coopers' 15-year old son. The suspects used ziploc ties to restrain the juvenile. The three men then entered the hallway of the residence, according to Jones.

"Edmond Cooper came out of the bedroom with a gun," Jones said. "He fired several shots, hitting one of the suspects."

In this case there is a good chance that this prevented the murder of his entire family. Without a firearm it is highly unlikely that this elderly gentleman would have been able to fend off the attack of 3 younger men. I hope his wife recovers from the concussion. Her injury and the trauma that the family had to and will have endure are the only tragic things that I see in this case.

Here is a very telling quote from the Sheriff's spokesperson. "It shows the times we're living in when families are at home, where they are supposed to be safe, and they are violated," Jones said. The original link didn't work, links are to follow up stories.

4. I'm going to make sure the XD is topped off. Maybe the shotty too.
Christ, that is so fucked up that average people go through stuff like that.

3. The perps had guns. Their confidence to enter the home devolved from the guns they held.
In other words, Dave, guns started it.

6. So a criminal has to have a gun to break in to a home? Even more reason to own a firearm.

7. C'mon. We had an armed car robery at the airport recently. No guns needed.
The bad guys approached quickly with baseball bats. Busted up the guards real good and took the money. This was in the middle of the day at an airport for petes sake.

8. I don't begrudge an armored car guard a gun. He's supposed to have one.
They got the jump on him. If they'd had guns he'd be dead.

12. Do you understand that the perps made decisions.
If they had wanted guns they would have had them. Then chose not to have guns.
If they wanted the guards dead it would have been easy with baseball bats. They chose not to kill the guards.

15. Well, it's good to know your priorities.
It's O.K. to defend money with lethal force, but not O.K. to defend your life, family or property. How humanitarian of you.

Do you commit this sort of public self-fornication often, or only here in the gungeon?

17. "Supposed to have one"?
No way. The way I see it, if private citizens don't get to have the means to defend themselves, no private entity does, and no government official who doesn't need it as part of his job (i.e. law enforcement and military). That means no rent-a-cops, no private bodyguards, no private detectives and skip-tracers, no judges and public prosecutors, no mayors, governors, legislators, and for good measure, no police chiefs and sheriffs if they're off-duty. They and their clients can call 911; if it's supposedly good enough for us plebs, it's good enough for them.

And Christ, I've lost count of how many times I've heard anti-RKBA types go "stuff isn't worth a human life!" Why does that apply to my stuff, but not to some bank's stuff?

And did it occur to you, sharesunited, that an armed rent-a-cop who lets himself get jumped by guys with baseball bats a) has just allowed his own weapon to fall into criminal hands, and b) if it were true that "if they had guns, he'd be dead" (that's first-degree murder, by the way) why wouldn't they shoot him with his own gun, which he just so obligingly provided them with?

20. I regularly transport...
things that are fairly valuable, at least to me. Things like my family, among others. I'm responsible for their protection. I'm trained in the safe, effective and responsible use of firearms and I'm legally licensed to carry one in public. So what are your criteria? Expand on your thesis a little here, you've certainly enticed your readers.

24. I know you're right. I suppose I'm an incurable optimist.
I just want to engage in some conversation and work through the mental processes that bring people to our different outlooks. A little introspection never hurt.

14. I don't think you really understand criminals.
And I hope you never rub elbows with them much.

There was a local home invasion recently.
A woman was on her day off from work. 3 young guys kicked her back door until it smashed in.They were all unarmed.
The woman called the cops and grabbed her gun. She told them to get out. At the sight of the gun they all ran, but one decided to try his luck. He turned around and charged her. I don't know what he and his friends would have done to a woman who dared to stand up to these macho guys if he got to her. I am guessing at least gang rape and beating, maybe murder. But she shot him in the chest twice and his friends ran.
Not only was this guy unafraid without his own gun. He wasn't that afraid of a gun pointing at him. It is fairly common that criminals are so aggressive and mean and violent they will charge a person with a gun.
The lady is ok. A bit shook up.

This actually happened near me.

16. No, humans started it.
Criminal humans. They decided to break the law and harm other people. They decided to take the easy way out and one of them paid with his life.

18. Damn straight
Once again, an anti-RKBA type attributes magical powers to guns. Never mind that 90% of nonfatal violent crime is committed without firearms, if it weren't for guns, nobody would even think to commit a crime.

But that does vary state to state

21. Well, if he had to
shoot 'em, he had to shoot 'em. But if you live in the kind of neighborhood where this sort of thing happens (or even if you don't), it helps to lock your doors at night.

They probably just forgot. But there could be a backstory there involving the teenager leaving it unlocked or some other such weirdness. Or the bad guys were going from house to house looking for unlocked doors.
