Sturm Ruger Q2 gun sales, profits explode
Southport firearm maker Sturm, Ruger & Co. Inc. said new gun models helped nearly double sales in the fiscal second-quarter, contributing to a 700 percent gain in net profits.

The company earned $8.7 million, or 46 cents a share, in the three months ended July 4, up from $1.1 million, or 5 cents a share, the comparable period a year ago.

Revenues in the latest quarter increased to $72.4 million from $38.7 million last year.

Sturm Ruger said the launch of its SR-556 sporting rifle and other new firearms aided the strong performance....

http://www.hartfordbusiness.com/news9738.html

The popularity of the SR-556 and other civilian firearms based on military patterns is a predictable unintended consequence of ongoing attempts by gun control extremists to ban them.

On the technical side, the gas piston upper receiver assembly with adjustable gas regulator and two-stage piston system isolate critical moving parts from powder residue. This is by no means new technology, and has been combined with the mature AR-15 platform successfully by other manufacturers. What's new is Ruger becoming more responsive to market demand.

I bought Ruger stock low and sold it high before the drop in price that preceded the current uptick. Now I regret not holding on to some of it.

1. I doubt these weapons are being purchase for self defense...
Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 08:50 AM by rfranklin
More likely in anticipation of the eagerly awaited rebellion against the "socialists" in Washington D.C. The teabagging bozos are only a few inches away from armed insurrection.

5. LOL!!!
I would like to have one of those rifles myself...

I am not planning any sort of insurrection, unless it is against paper targets, and pop cans...

12. I have a Ruger SR9 myself, so you are mistaken...
I am referring to the surge in the buying of such military style weapons. Also the stockpiling of ammo that made it impossible for me to get ammo recently.

29. The surge in sales of "military style" weapons began in the 1990s
It was triggered by the now-expired federal "assault weapons" ban.

33. Maybe the 1930's?
The government sold a lot of military surplus Springfield '03s cheap. That's about as "military style" a rifle as you could get back in the day. Today they are "traditional hunting rifles".

30. Umm, the AR-15 platform is, in fact, the #1 defensive carbine in U.S. homes, by far.
It also happens to be the most popular centerfire target rifle in the United States.

F-class (long range) precision competition, 300 to 1200 yards:

Camp Perry style target competition (iron sights only):

IPSC/USPSA carbine and 3-gun (what I compete in, FWIW):

I myself shoot a non-automatic civilian AK, though...

35. Here are some reasons why folks purchase these guns...
For target practice (they are accurate, have low recoil, and use relatively cheap ammunition); for hunting (that's right, a number of manufacturers now make hunting rifles based on the AR 15 platform; only chambered for more powerful rounds; for home protection (they are short, light and in light of the above, multi-use). In short, the "old, obsolete military designs" are once again retired to civilian use. In case you are unaware, the up-to-date weapon for the foot soldier is FULLY automatic; hence, semi-auto "assault weapons" are obsolete. Please see the Springfield rifles which were "retired" by the end of WW II in favor the the Garand semi-auto. Later, the Garand was retired in favor of the M 16.

You see, the truth can be very prosaic when the heifer dust is blown away.

SR-556
LCR
LCP

and

20-30 round factory mags for the Mini14.

Now if they would start to make their cool folding stocks for the mini....

36. I agree, and it started with the .22 semi-auto pistol in 1951...
continued with the single-action revolvers they popularized in the 1950s, followed by very good and durable double action revolvers which sold for less than other makes, etc. I have an old Police Service-Six revolver in .357. Solid, can be field stripped, and very accurate.

13. I have to agree.
I have always been partial to the original look of the M16 - triangular foregrip, standard buttstock.

Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 12:47 PM by dairydog91
Particularly regarding the buttstock. First, M4 telescoping buttstocks usually use a smaller buffer spring (Less mechanically sound) than the one from an M16 buttstock. Second, a folding buttstock is just one moving part that can break or get stuck when you need to use the weapon. Third, the standard buttstock has that nifty little space in the back for a cleaning kit, loose rounds, or snack bar, which I think is usually more useful than the ability to compress the weapon's length by several inches.

31. Except stocks that adjust for length of pull *are* extremely useful.
If we all had the same length arms and always shot from exactly the same position wearing the exact same clothes, then yes, a fixed stock would have its advantages, as you rightfully point out. Nonadjustable car seats are lighter and sturdier than adjustable seats, too, yet the advantages of adjustable seats do outweigh the drawbacks.

If M4 style stocks were as flimsy as some make them out to be, they wouldn't hold up in military use. I'd like to get an adjustable stock for my AK someday, but it's not a financial priority right now.

15. Ugly? Well to each their own.

I prefer flattops. I've never liked the look or function of a carry handles. Rails are nice for accessories (aimpoint, eotech, light), but they can be rough on the hands. If I did have a rail, I would also use a vertical grip. As it is, I use the magwell on my AR carbine.

Plus, I love the piston upper. Piston uppers are a true mechanical improvement.

Function is beautiful.

So I guess you'd want to shut them all down. Except for the ones making firearms for government use.

19. I don't get why anyone would buy the SR-556...
It does nothing that ARs from other makes don't do for considerably less money. I've seen POF piston rifles go cheaper than $1995.
