Gunfree Englewood (Chicago) : 2 shot, one dead at Englewood block party
Englewood is a Chicago neighborhood with about 40,000 residents, and a large amount of gang crime.

As with the rest of Chicago, It's illegal to register and own a handgun.

*************************************************************

This is the second block party with a shooting in two weeks. Maybe they should outlaw block parties.

A 19-year-old man was found shot to death Saturday evening at a block party in the Englewood neighborhood, police said.

At about 11:40 p.m., police responded to shots fired in the 900 block of West 61st Street, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

Police found Deontae Smith, 19, of the 6700 block of South Throop Street with a gunshot wound to his chest, Greer said. He was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. at the Stein Institute, according to the Cook County medical exmainer's office.

Another 17-year-old girl also was found shot in the thigh near the intersection of 61st and Green Streets. She was taken to John Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, Greer said.

Both teens were attending a block party in Englewood when a fight broke out and someone began shooting, Greer said.

Police are investigating.

1. I worked in these neighborhoods for 2 yrs.
At the schools, I was always leery and praying everyday I would make it out without getting shot by stray gunfire. In 2008 I was at a School waiting to be let in, about 6am. By 6:45 there was a big Police presence: Had no idea why til I got home, a 73 yr old woman was shot dead thru her picture window about 5 houses down from school. We didn't hear it I am sure we were already inside.
They walked up to the door of her house and rang doorbell, when she started looking out the window they shot her. According to the articles about it, they speculated she was a witness to something
and might have been seen talking to police.
It is sooo tragic, certain parts of the city. i tried for 2 yrs to figure it out by observing what went on in the schools. I don't know the only way I can answer it is it's a cycle that never ends.

3. Sounds like they need more laws
banning guns even more, until these people get the message.

4. Yup, They should pass laws to make murder illegal
Or they should outlaw randomly shooting into a crowd of people. Or if the city already banned guns they should probably double super ban guns.

5. Also they could get creative with it
guns are loud, so why not put a limit on the amount of decibels any individual is allowed to create in public? Also expand anti-pollution laws to cover both the discharge from firing a bullet and the metal contamination in the environment from every missed shot (get the EPA in on it).

People will think twice before committing murder if they knew they could be hit with some pretty hefty fines by the state.

7. Your too late on the gunshot detector

Audio data to detect gunfire will train cameras on the scene and auto-call 911

http://www.securityinfowatch.com/root+level/1279235

City officials are using new technology that recognizes the sound of a gunshot within a two-block radius, pinpoints the source, turns a surveillance camera toward the shooter and places a 911 call. Officials can then track the shooter and dispatch officers to the scene.

*************

In Chicago, police hope the gunshot detection systems will add momentum to a technology-fueled crackdown on guns and gang violence. The city in 2004 reduced its homicide rate to its lowest level since 1965 and police seized 10,000 guns - successes that were in large part credited to a network of "pods," or remote-controlled cameras that can rotate 360 degrees and feed video directly to squad-car laptops. The SENTRI systems are an addition to that network.

8. It is odd that they'd think of those
in Chicago, of all places. That is a gun free utopia, like DC.

I would think montana, vermont, and utah would be in more desperate need of those, as they have more guns per capita, which is the only contributing factor to gun crime.
