Cops arrest fired worker...
San Jose police Wednesday morning arrested a man they say was on his way to his termination meeting at a local recycling center with a loaded gun and after leaving his family with a chilling message: This is the last time you will ever see me.

****snip****

In this case, a union representative at Waste Solutions received a call around 9:45 a.m. from the suspect's panicked son. He told the rep that his father had left his Modesto home earlier in the morning in his blue Chevy truck with a gun in his waistband. He was upset and was suggesting that he was soon going to be dead.

The union representative called police.

Thinking of SiPort, patrol Sgt. Eric Phan and his team — filled with seasoned officers — scrambled. The grievance meeting was scheduled for 10 a.m. Along with engaging Modesto police to check out the man, who it turned out had no major criminal history, they called the San Jose company. Officers urged Waste Solutions that it lock its doors and get its employees to safety.

2. People paying attention can stop a lot of these things.
In this case it was obvious. But if people paid better attention to those around them, we might be able to catch folks before they do something bad.

7. and if "we" don't

Then somebody's life might be today's price of your freedumb.

He had no history of criminal behaviour, but he had a handgun and a grievance.

I prefer to live - and work - where people with grievances don't have handguns, myself.

I can think of one such incident here in Ontario (pop 10 million or so) in recent memory: 1999, a transit worker with a grievance took his rifle to work.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2009/04/06/ot-090406-transit-shooting.html

When people aren't toddling around with pistols in their pants, it just isn't quite as common.

Good for you. Remind me again why anyone anywhere should care about what you "prefer?"

Remind me again why anyone anywhere should care about what you "prefer?"

Perhaps you think I should care whether anyone cares about what I prefer ...

Let's save us both the time.

Have a good weekend, iverglas.

12. so you see what I mean about stalking?

The post of mine to which you initially replied in this thread also had content.

Your choice was to ignore it and spew negative personal commentary.

You might want to reconsider this course of conduct.

13. Good thing lack of handguns prevents mass shootings.
Nobody has ever thought of committing a mass shooting with a rifle or shotgun.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocaust_Museum_Shooting

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Whitman

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_University,_Fullerton_library_massacre

Strangely 4 of the 5 deadliest mass shootings in the US all involved either rifles or shotguns (only Va Tech involved only handguns).

The deadliest mass shooting in Canada also involved only rifles

Yup someone willing to go on a mass shooting and then turn the gun on themselves is going to be concerned about the lack of portability and concealability that a rifle has. Generally mass shootings don't last very long so portability isn't an issue and once you start shooting concealability also becomes a non issue.

4. A very good ending.
It could have been yet another tragedy that "nobody saw coming".

It's always a very good day when everyone goes home alive. Or at least some of them do and the rest cool off in jail till somebody figures out what to do with them.
