"I saw them lying on the floor crying... and I realized I had to buy the gun."
The linked story gives a long list of Florida DGUs, here is one that really impressed me:

The burly 43-year-old Venezuelan immigrant keeps a clean shop and treats everybody, including shoplifters he catches on camera, with courtesy. But in the nine years he has managed Stop-N-Go stores, Abdel says, he has been targeted by armed robbers three times. The first two times, he cleaned out the cash register with no hesitation, but his wife and daughter were working in the store with him the second time. "I saw them lying on the floor crying," he recalls, "and I realized I had to buy the gun."

So Abdel purchased a .45 Kimber for $1,100, took gun-handling classes, and read up on self-defense laws. "My boss said, 'Why do you want to make a problem?' But I told him: 'I have to protect myself and my family.'"

I know he sounds like a monster to "civilized" folks. What should really frighten you "civilized" folks is the fact that the culture may be changing:

Abdel pulls out a surprising document — a missive of gratitude from Hammond's {--the perpetrator's--} grandmother, handwritten on yellow lined paper and dated December 30, 2008, the day after the shooting. "I am sending you this letter because I want to apologize for the actions my grandson Joshua Hammond took toward you and your customers," wrote Shirley Riettie. "I am very grateful that you didn't take his life. I know it would have been justified."

Imagine that! The grandmother admits he would have been justified to take the felon's life!!!

Imagine a world where everyone sides with the good guys, even some of the bad guy's relatives! Imagine the innocent having a fighting chance? Horrific, isn't it? Barbaric.

PS: the story is tainted by its headline. Whoever wrote it doesn't understand what "vigilante" means.

Line-Cutting Dispute At Roadside Food Stand Leads To Fatal Shooting

TAMPA, Fla. (Associated Press) - A dispute over line-cutting at a roadside food stand led to the shooting death of a bystander and the serious injury of another man, Tampa police said.

Police arrested two men in the case Friday, Juan Martinez-Morales, 20, and Leeching-Hong Luberisse, 18. Both were booked into jail Saturday on charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to Hillsborough County jail records.

I also support laws against felons in possession. I oppose second-degree murder and attempted murder as well.

There is no conflict.

The record shows that the real "judicial activists" are conservatives on Supreme Court

"One conclusion our data suggests is that those justices often considered more "liberal" - Justices Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Souter and John Paul Stevens - vote least frequently to overturn Congressional statutes, while those often labeled "conservative" vote more frequently to do so. At least by this measure (others are possible, of course), the latter group is the most activist."

17. incorrect definition

judicial activism refers to a judge/court that is more prone to make policy rather than to interpret the policy as set forth by the legislature.

the definition that is used by the OP is deceptive and simplistic to say the least.

If anybody else ever bothered replying to one of jody's nonsense posts, you might have a point.

Since it's rare for anyone to do that -- if anyone does and disagrees, jody puts them "on ignore", and half the time when somebody does and agrees, he chooses to misunderstand (probably because it's hard to follow the thread through Swiss cheese ... or maybe it's just, like, inherent), and insults them anyway -- we pretty much are talking about moi.

G'head. Make a list of jody's posts in the last week or month, and see who's replying.

Oh, "outer darkness"? Yeah, just a bit of hyperbole, eh?

5. I don't think taking a gun from someone is as easy as you imagine
To quote myself:

Gun Take-Aways

One of the arguments against self-defense I find most amusing is the danger of having a gun taken from
you in a self-defense scenario. It amuses me, not because it is wrong, but because it is so obviously wrong.
Try a thought experiment. Imagine that you are in a very expensive suit and wearing a helmet to protect
your head. A reasonably bright and healthy ten-year-old has a paint gun; your goal is to take it from her. If
you approach too closely or try to get the gun, she can shoot you until you stop. If her shots hit your center
chest or head she will get $50.00. Do you think you could get the gun without “dying” in the attempt (no
pun intended)? Would your odds be better with an adult?

But we have more than intuition. The Justice Department‟s National Crime Victimization Survey data from
1992 to 1998 contained only one incident where a gun was taken from a defender by an attacker. (The data
is not detailed enough to tell how the “takeaway” happened, so even this case may not have involved
physically removing the gun from the victims hands.) According to analysis, the upper limit estimate—the
highest possible rate in the sample data—is 0.2 percent. In real life, then, successful takeaways happened—
at most—once in every 500 defensive gun uses. {41}

13. Cliche
it seems criminals have the fastest hands in the world.

Why do they even bother to buy guns? Just break in to enough houses and eventually someone will pull a gun on them and then they could effortlessly snatch it away. Save a few hundred bucks that way.

I assume they could likewise get ammo that way.

Are all parrots Hispanic? Actually, I believe the parrot in question was an African grey, but that might have been Bongo Marie.
Oops. There's your opening. You may now call me a white supremacist.

And the tale you will want to remember, should you be with us long enough, lest you run off at the mouth in such unfortunate directions again:

http://www.companionparrot.com/Parrot_Stories.htm
... This story about my African grey, Bongo Marie, appeared in the first issue of the Pet Bird Report and I have had many requests to repeat it.

I am convinced after living with Bongo Marie for over 20 years that she has a sense of humor. Her laughter is almost always appropriate. It seems to me as if some African greys have a superiority complex, as if they think they are better than other parrots they live with.

Certainly Bongo Marie has always acted as if Paco, my female double yellow head Amazon, was not her equal – as if green was an inferior color. They both have lived with me for about 20 years now and will never be friends. Bongo will occasionally call Paco’s name until Paco responds. Then the grey will tell the Amazon to "Be Quiet!"

A few years ago, Bongo Marie’s cage was right next to the dining room table and Paco’s cage was right near the door. I was fixing dinner and had just taken a Cornish game hen out of the oven and was poised to carve a piece of the breast meat. Bongo Marie slid down the side of her cage and eyed my dinner quizzically. Suddenly, she threw her head up and in a frantic questioning voice exclaimed, "OH NO, PACO!?!?!" After I stopped laughing. I explained to her that the bird on the platter was not Paco, "Look Bongo Marie – that’s not Paco. Paco is right over there." She looked towards Paco and in a very indignant voice said, "oh no," as if she was disappointed. Then she laughed hysterically with her very maniacal laugh as if to let me know she had been joking all of the time!

"The Parrot's Lament." I heard the tale told on CBC radio many years ago. It cracked me up. Many people on the internet know the tale:

http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&safe=off&num=30&q=%22oh+no+paco%22+parrot&meta=&fp=6393c88910a58a95

You're just not one of 'em. Oh well, Paco. There seems to be a lesson for you in here.

One. What in the hell good does having a gun do to stop a robber from coming into a store. How does having two guns make the wife and children not cry. How does watching a father kill someone not traumatize a child.

Two. Just because one's logic draws them to the obvious conclusions in one - it does not mean that a robber is not considered a criminal nor does it mean there is no justification to kill the robber.

It just means more guns don't solve anything.

I hate living in the same world as you.

57. oh no, Paco!

Master Paine and the Mad Viper didn't come off too well on this little salley, did they?

Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.

In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

A little Yeats. Kulchah.

But nothing to rival a little Dr. Johnson.

Here malice, rapine, accident conspire,
And now a rabble rages, now a fire;
their ambush here relentless ruffians lay,
and here the fell attorney prowls for prey;
here falling houses thunder on your head,
and here a female atheist talks you dead ...

11. Personal defense isn't the exclusive privledge of the ultra wealthy.
Most business owners can't afford $20 or $30 thousand dollars a year on security. Besides which, security guards usually have less training than the average gun owner. And a lot less that professional law enforcement. I'd much rather have the shop owner holding a gun than any guard--being the lowest bidder for a job opening doesn't convey special knowledge and expertise.

What is with these common folk and not having the money to hire other people to deal with their problems? I was just lecturing my butler on this the other day, as he complained about having to drive his rickety old truck 4 hours every day to work because our homeowners association wouldn't let his kind live anywhere near us: why not do as I do and buy a fancy new limousine and a driver to take you back and forth?

But he's probably too lazy to do that.

I wonder if he'd be able to use a weapon on a robber without risking getting hurt in the process.

25. Well I disagree...
about that professor. I work as a cop and do some part time work as a security guard. I will be happy to stipulate that there are some real dregs in the security field. Just like in the Law enforcement and teaching professions. By and large the majority of security officers I know are fine representatives of the profession. Of course I am not so sure about some of those professors I dealt with in college. :D

33. I thought due to issues with rent-a-cops many departments are not allowing their officers to do that
as secondary employment. I can understand that since I have met very few private security guards & loss prevention types that were anything more than a waste of oxygen. Again, IME they are mostly wannabes with inadequate training and vastly over inflated sense of their importance and authority. Sworn LEOs are generally better, but they too have issues when you do not let them control the situation.

My favorite technique with them in response to their "orders" is to just say "no" or "request denied". At some point it ends up with them puffing up and yelling that I must respect their authority...right out of South Park. It also helps that I understand what they can and cannot do much better than they do (Shopkeepers privilege, photography rights, etc). If they escalate they have always been easy to disarm/defeat/get fired. Done it multiple times.

76. Yes and no...
Liability continues to be a sticky wicket but the numbers of officers with part time security gigs is huge. One of the reasons is the LE has a statutory authority to take things to a higher level if necessary. Everything from traffic control at construction sites, Special events, Apartment courtesy officers to standing a watch in a ER or retail establishment is available in my area with a large number of participating agencies. I often provide a bike patrol at peak business hours at a local shopping complex.

On the other hand I too have been known to occasionally confront some local security officers when off duty. The ones especially that have a hat way too large for their responsibilities. They really should be more aware of their legal status and limits.

on every occasion where I enlightened guards about their limitations I was off duty and did not inform them of my regular job. Watching them flustered was great fun. Even so there were many that did their job well and I never said squat.

86. i agree. i;m a cop too and have similar experience
fwiw, boeing security is a perfect example of a private security force that is very professional, very well trained, and i have immense respect for those guys. they are armed, btw.

boeing fire dept. is excellent too, as one would expect considering the value of their property and the flammability of aviation fuel.

i find it interesting that your dept. lets you do part time security work. the agency i work for (and the one i used to work for) specfically prohibit us working as security guards or any other secondary employment that has any sort of law enforcement aspect. even working as a bouncer would be prohibited.

i contrast this with so called "details" or "off dutys" where one is working for a private company but in the law enforcement capacity, such as when a private school hires uniformed officers for security at an event, or something like that.

17. "the culture may be changing"?

You betcha.

There are obviously a whole lot of assholes with guns these days who weren't around yesteryear.

Who are these assholes?

The ones whose "LEGAL" firearms end up in the hands of people not eligible to own them.

The firearms dealers who know fucking perfectly well that they are selling guns to straw purchasers, and don't give a shit.

The private vendors - be it via the Pennysaver, a gun show or a brother-in-law's buddy - who sell guns to anybody with the cash, and don't give a shit.

The "legal" owners who leave their guns lying around their fucking houses unsecured, where they are stolen by people who break in, sometimes with the specific goal of "finding" some handy guns.

The firearms manufacturers who continue distributing guns to dealers who have demonstrated their negligence, if not their wilful disregard of the law, by selling large numbers of guns that end up being used in crime.

There was once a day, even in the USofA, when every petty crook on the corner really didn't have a pistol stuffed down his pants, and bad guys weren't driving around with almost-AK47s in the trunks of their cars.

I actually remember it. I used to vacation in the US in the 1960s and 1970s with my family, and travelled there frequently on my own in the 1970s and 1980s. The country wasn't batshit insane about guns back then.

And tell me not about wars on drugs.

The warriors need guns to engage in the war, and their customers need guns to obtain the wherewithal to purchase their products. And all of the above assholes have made very sure that they all have 'em.

I have always believed that once the RBKA is firmly established, we--those of us Americans who support the right--have a moral duty to work for laws that respect the right AND the need to keep guns from criminals and the unfit.

Keep your politics to home.

Immediately upon you getting your politics out of everywhere in the world where you now stick them (and that includes the guns on my side of the border as a result of your politics, and of course many much more momentous things), I'll stay right out.

Unless and until:

87. QC on the PT1911s seems to be quite good
Yes, Tauruses (Tauri?) have had some QC issues, but it very much depends on the model. With the PT1911, they seem to have tightened the standards. It makes sense that they would, given that with the PT1911, they're trying to break into a niche market in which there are plenty of well established competitors.

I have a PT1911, blued with night sights, and it works very well. The aspects that make it cheaper than other 1911s don't so much reflect on accuracy or reliability, but rather, the amount of maintenance you have to put into it. It's more likely to suffer malfunctions if you allow fouling to build up, and because the bluing's not brilliant, you have to watch for rust if you wear it in warm weather.

Be that as it may, I'd not recommend any 1911 as the first purchase for a new handgun owner needing a defensive firearm. Personally, I'd steer people towards a Glock 19, or perhaps an XD or S&W M&P. If you want reliability with minimal maintenance, plus a shallow learning curve on controls, polymer-frame striker-fired jobs are your best bet. Not that there's anything wrong with 1911s--the first time I fired one, I immediately understood why people wax lyrical about them--but they are, in my opinion, better suited to more experienced shooters.

85. this is correct
people often misuse vigilante.

somebody who defends themselves or others at the time of a crime is not a vigilante. a vigilante seeks to mete out justice after the fact for past (alleged) crimes.

huge difference.

88. In more general terms...
... vigilantes are essentially self-appointed police and judiciary rolled into one. The main problem with vigilantes is that, because they're self-appointed, they don't consider themselves answerable to anyone else. By contrast, the phrase "better to be judged by twelve than carried by six," even though associated with more extreme proponents of armed self-defense (since the phrase argues against erring on the side of caution with regards to legal matters), still reflects that the speaker accepts that he will have to stand trial and answer to a jury for his actions.
