New gun purchase from Kmart today...
A man and his wife were carrying a new rifle of some sort and two fold-up camping chairs out of the store. They'd obviously just bought these items. I thought at the time, "Wonder what their plans are for the weekend?" Then I later saw on the news that there will be two Anti-Health Care Reform rallies tomorrow in a neighboring town. Very interesting. I now wonder if these things are related?

4. I just moved back to Seattle after living 7 years in NC and I don't recall
SEEING anyone carrying and I lived in a pretty redneck county (Johnston, if any NC folks reading this). But we had a rule at work that nobody could have their guns on the property (although everybody knew there were plenty to be found in the cars in the parking lot) :7

It will be interesting to see what happens at the rally, if anything. If there are blatant guns in evidence, I'm sure it'll be on the news. :hi:

5. seattle, as part of WA state does allow open carry
of handguns (w/o a permit required) and is a shall issue state in regards to handgun permits.

9. I fnd it interesting that...
...you would see someone purchase a couple of random legal items and think about a rally that they might attend. A touch paranoid?

10. Very doubtful if there is any relation.
Open carry is not legal in Florida.

13. Open carry is legal in Florida
Open carry is legal in Florida if one is engaged in hunting, fishing, or trapping or traveling to/from such an activity. So say there was a rally with a pond nearby, throw a line in the water and you can wear your handgun on your belt all day long. Not very realistic, just saying it is legal in those instances.

18. But not on the street, or at rallies.
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 08:32 AM by GreenStormCloud
You are correct. When I used "Open Carry" I was meaning casual carry in public, such as on the street, in stores, at rallies, and other places where an open gun would not be expected.

11. just for future ref

A man and his wife

A few decades ago now, publishers put out guidelines on inclusive language.

One notes that you did not say "A woman and her husband". Perhaps you see the problem. We don't tend to speak of men as if they are appendages of their spouses.

"A man and a woman" works just fine, particularly since I doubt that you knew their marital or relationship status.

You know, a few decades ago, we actually thought this sort of thing would have withered and died by now.

Forgive me, but it just hurts my eyes. Back to the regularly scheduled.

12. Not coincidentally, I believe dove season begins soon
Could the "rifle of some sort" have been a shotgun? Perhaps they intended to do a few rounds of clay pigeon-shooting over the weekend in preparation for upland bird season.

14. That's very scary.
Maybe the police should be notified. I would hate for something to happen. Better safe than sorry.

15. Notified of what?
Someone shopped at K-Mart?

Being white (just guessing about that) and shopping at K-Mart?

Felony buying lawn chairs out of season?

17. Conspiracy to shoot skeet?
Actually, there is one thing that strikes me as odd, which is that any time I've purchased a firearm from any dealer, it came in a container of some sort; a cardboard box at the very least.

19. Please explain how it is scary.
That guy that showed up with the rifle over his shoulder was just one nutcase, not an entire movement all by himself. Lawn chairs and a long gun? Hunting season is coming up. Sounds to me like they are planning on some camping/hunting and a relaxed weekend away from everything.

What I do find scary is that millions are being deceived into opposing health care reform. But that is a different fear, and a different topic.

23. Maybe we could have a bureau
that handles these things, and encourages citizens to report on the "suspicious" actions of their neighbors.

25. Obama started something like that..
but then was forced to shut it down by the RW political machine. I was hoping to see an expansion of that program.

I found it very comforting that if I saw something that went against Obama's ideals I could email them and it would be documented. Now that I can't flag the activities I see around me, I feel left in the dark.

29. Are you SERIOUS?
PLEASE - tell me that was sarcastic.

You cannot possibly believe it is somehow right to turn in your neighbor for having differing political views.

Who gives a flying fuck WHAT Obama's ideals are? He is PRESIDENT - not GOD for fuck's sake. People still retain the absolute right to disagree with him, regardless of our political perspective.
