Murder using rifles (including "assault weapons") declined again in 2008...
Rifles (all types combined) accounted for 3.0% of murders in 2007, and 2.6% in 2008. Out of 14,180 total murders, all styles of rifles combined were used in 375, down from 450 in 2007.

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/data/table_20.html

So much for the "Modern Looking Rifles Is Gonna Killz Us All" meme. I think the "assault weapon" fraud is dead beyond resurrection...

1. Also worth mentioning...
California had the highest number of murders committed with firearms in 2008. Despite its state ban on "assault weapons," it still has the second highest number of murders by rifle for the same period.

...assault weapon...bullet hose...weapon of mass death...shoots down airliners...preferred tool of terrorists...gun culture... militiamen...bayonet lugs...things that go up...shooting from the hip...pistol grips...high-capacity magazines...the people that want them are precisely the people that shouldn't have them...

9. Yep, facts sure are facts- and they don't look good for an AWB
Of course, if you have some evidence that the FBI statistics are cooked, now's the time to
produce it...

In case your reading glasses are smudgy, we asked if you had any evidence the FBI stats were cooked.

Thought you would have hard evidence at hand, being an expert and all:

96. "fellow experts"? You think YOU'RE an EXPERT??
Kid, you really need to stop talking about firearms and acting like you know everything there is about weapons.

Because you're making it look bad for those of us who do

Apparently not.

13. The Marines don't use civilian "assault weapons", as you WELL know.
They use civilian-derived pistols and sniper rifles, but the Marines do NOT issue non-automatic Title 1 carbines as infantry rifles; they issue Title 2 selective-fire military assault rifles, just like every other military on this planet.

If you'd like to make a coherent argument that NON-automatic CIVILIAN small-caliber carbines are a huge homicide problem, then perhaps you can show me in the Uniform Crime Reports. Otherwise, you're just perpetuating the same old FUD campaign by pretending the "assault weapon" fraud had anything to do with military hardware.

23. "Civilian-derived pistols"?
I have to correct you there. The USMC, to the best of my knowledge, has two issue pistols: the Beretta M9 and the MEU(SOC). The M9 is, of course, based on the Beretta model 92, which was originally developed with an eye to Italian government contracts; the very fact that it's chambered in 9x19mm makes it a non-civilian weapon under Italian law (which, like Mexico, prohibits private ownership of weapons in "military calibers"). And the MEU(SOC) is a 1911 variant.

25. In addition...
the Marines have access to and use the SIG 228/M11 in 9mm as well as the Mk23 Mod 0 .45 ACP SOCOM offensive pistol system. The Marines also requested and received a modified M9 from Beretta with the adoption of the M9A1. Both the M9 and M9A1 are in service with the MEU{SOC) as well as the M1911A1 SOC pistol.

29. Should have said civilian-market, I suppose (from the U.S. standpoint).
The M9, the Sig Sauer the Army issues as an alternate, and of course the M1911 are primarily U.S.-civilian-market pistols, and when adopted by the military they were COTS (commercial off-the-shelf). The majority of Beretta 92's, Sigs, and M1911's in the world are in civilian hands. BTW, is the M9 assembled by Beretta USA, or is it assembled in Italy by the parent company? I believe FN M16's are made here.

Unlike the Beretta/Sig pistols and the Remington sniper rifle, the M16 is exclusively a military/police weapon, and only a few collectibles are in non-government hands. Meaning, the fact that one qualified on an M16A2 as an 18- or 19-year-old does not automatically make one an expert on civilian guns, never mind civilian gun law.

Its the same context they've always been in. Its just that even more years of data continue to say the same thing.

24. It's not exactly a surprise...
...but it's always nice to have the most recent data. With all the incidents of unlawful use of semi-auto-only rifles that various people keep posting (as if the plural of "anecdote" were "data"), it's good to be able to point to actual overall numbers. In particular, I've encountered quite a few news media pieces that suggest that use of rifle-type "assault weapons" is on the increase, which is hard to counter with data that's even a few years old.

26. Amazing. The Assault Weapons Ban put tons more rifles on the street.
I actually would have expected rifle shootings to go up simply because there are so many more available now. Same if there were more cars on the road.

27. But did the study take in to account that these guns
are scary looking? Many times they are painted black. Some even have bayonet lugs for christs sake, bayonet lugs!!!!!!!!!

Figure that in and I think we'll get a different result.

28. Here Here. FBI should keep track of "scariness",
The "scariness" of rifles has gone up 38.8% per my calculations.

Hell a guy carried one of these weapons within miles of President Obama.
Had this been done 30 years ago the crowd would have been 89.7% less scared of a polished walnut stock and blue metal as they are of polymer grips, black color, and shoulder things that go up.

It is all about the children, children being more afraid of assault weapons compared to non-assault (rainbow) weapons.
