Florida man kills fiancee on eve of wedding--thought she was an intruder
WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. – A man who thought there was an intruder in his house shot and killed his fiancee the day before they were to be married, police said Friday.

"Right now everything points to a tragic accident," Police Chief Kevin Brunelle told The Associated Press, adding investigators were awaiting forensic results.

John Tabutt, 62, told investigators he got his gun when he thought he heard an intruder, then fired at a figure in the hallway, according to Brunelle. It was Tabutt's live-in fiancee, 62-year-old Nancy Dinsmore, who family members say he was going to marry Saturday. Tabutt told authorities he thought she was next to him in bed the whole time.

A message left for a phone number listed for the house was not returned.

Brunelle said no charges have been filed against Tabutt, adding the information he provided has been verified and he appeared "very distraught."

Tabutt was "very concerned about her well-being," standing by while she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Brunelle added.

18. this is in FL
where you can shoot first ask questions later right? very, very sad - if he had just said something, she would have said something, and they'd both be alive.

28. I see Brady Campaign propaganda works
You're thinking of the laws, adopted in Florida and some other states, that the Brady Campaign has termed "shoot first" laws, and which the NRA calls "stand your ground" laws. The NRA term is arguably more accurate, because the law does not allow you to "shoot first and ask questions later," even though that's obviously the association the Brady Campaign's term is intended to evoke.

What the law actually says is that, if you are attacked in a place where you have legal right to be, you are not obliged to attempt to retreat before using force to defend yourself (hence "stand your ground"). It does not allow you to open fire on someone "just to be on the safe side"; you still have to demonstrate a reasonable belief that there was an imminent threat of unlawful infliction of permanent injury or death.

7. Better idea - flashlight
If you're going to have a gun and you're going to investigate that noise in your house at night - have a good flashlight by your gun. Identify with the light whether that dark figure is indeed an intruder before you shoot.

Better yet IMHO stay in bedroom, call 911, have your gun and flashlight and yell out to intruder you have called 911 and if they come any further you have a gun and you will shoot.

5. Talk about a guy being trigger happy.
The worst story I ever heard was about a father who killed his daughter. She was hiding in a closet and made a noise as a joke. He opened the door and shot her.

12. Fishy.
"he thought she was next to him in bed the whole time"

He didn't have a clue about that when he got up. I would think he would check to make sure she was okay before he got the gun and played "High Noon". After all, looking beside you in the bed isn't that hard. If she slept in another room, then this would make some sense.

Fishy.

14. I could see this happening, though.
People are somewhat dazed when they wake up in the middle of the night, and aren't thinking straight. It's why keeping a gun near your bed is extremely dangerous.

15. Coupled with hearing
someone come into your house in the night when you're in bed, that would be frightening enough. As tragic and senseless as it is, I can see how it could happen. Although it's not a good idea to just blindly shoot when you can't even see what you're shooting at, frankly.

I don't think you're fit to be using a gun. Just my take, of course.

21. Actually had this happen a few nights ago.
Woke up suddenly aware that someone was walking into the bedroom--it was very dark, and I was still half asleep and groggy from Nyquil--took me a full second or so to figure out it was my wife, who was supposed to be in bed next to me (we have a big-ass bed). The difference: I'm not completely stupid, and I wasn't armed.

This is a wrong reaction, though I'm Monday morning QBing. He should have turned the light on or warned his target; and then he would have known it was his girlfriend. Oh well, I'm sure he's playing those situations in his head too. Tragic and sad. He was pretty clearly disoriented. Never a good mix with guns.

Four masked men forced their way into the house of a 79-year-old man in the Stockman's Lane area at about 1835 GMT.

Thirty minutes later, four men, one of whom was armed with a hook-like weapon, entered a pensioner's home at Montreal Street, near the Crumlin Road.

A 79-year-old man was later robbed by four men at his home at Orient Gardens, near the Cliftonville Road.

Victim 'beaten to death for £40'
<...>
Harry Lindley was discovered in a pool of blood at his bungalow in Wallsend in April last year.

Michael Stevenson, 21, denied murder on the first day of a week-long trial.

The jury heard that Mr Lindley suffered at 15 least wounds to his head and face. He died from his injuries in hospital 26 days later.

Simon Bourne-Arton QC, prosecuting, said: "He had been struck repeatedly by a fist, with a weapon or weapons, stamped on repeatedly and he was probably subject to some form of strangulation."

The court heard how a hole in the wall of Mr Lindley's home had been caused by the defendant allegedly forcing the elderly victim's head into it.

You don't need guns to commit violent crime, and committing violent crime becomes a lot easier when your prospective victim is unarmed. Oh hey, what's this?

Man robbed by raiders at his home

A 52-year-old man was robbed by three raiders as he was letting himself into his house after work.

The group, all wearing balaclavas and dark clothes, shoved him into the hallway of the house in Langford Road in Arnold at 2350 GMT on Monday.

They forced him onto the lounge floor, demanded cash and threatened him with a knife and a firearm when he refused.
"Threatened him with a knife and a firearm"? How is that possible, in the UK where handguns are illegal? Or could it be that the only people you can trust to obey firearms laws are the ones who wouldn't use them for unlawful purposes in the first place?
