Illegal bullets found in home of man who allegedly threatened Obama
Fifty "cop killer" bullets and a stolen rifle were among the firearms arsenal confiscated from the home of the Newark Liberty International Airport security guard who allegedly threatened President Barack Obama, law enforcement authorities said.

John Brek, 55, a six-year employee of FJC Security Services in Floral Park, pleaded not guilty on three state felony charges and remained in jail Thursday on a $220,000 bail bond.

He was arrested Tuesday, the night before Obama was due to land in Newark to campaign for Gov. Jon Corzine. Brek told another airport worker "he cut a hole in the fence to be able to shoot the president, that he was just a short distance away," according to the complaint filed in court. Brek also "simulated holding a rifle in the direction of where the president would be, with the purpose to put in him imminent fear of death," the complaint said.

-----

Brek gave police permission to search his Linden, N.J., home, where officers found eight handguns, which he had permits for, and 35 rifles, which do not need permits, officials said Thursday. One of the rifles was reported stolen 11 years ago in Alabama, the complaint said. Brek knew the rifle was stolen when he acquired it, the complaint alleged.

Officers found 50 rounds of 44-caliber, 240 grain-jacketed Remington hollow point bullets, illegal in some states, including New Jersey, because they can pierce cops' bullet-resistant armor, said Paul Loriquet, spokesman for the Essex County prosecutor's office.

Shame on Newsday for some BS hysterical reporting on the ammo! And for the same from the DA! This assclown should face trial on the threat against Obama and the stolen weapon and if the ammo was in a firearm under NJ law then they have him on that BS law - but if not from what I've read of NJ law that ammo was legal if not in a firearm.

20. Yeah, "hollow point" is the opposite of "cop killer"
If you've got a vest on, a hollow point is the "best" thing to get shot with.

3. If the guy broke the law he needs to be arrested, but the evil re: hollow points is pure asshattery
Edited on Sat Oct-24-09 11:45 AM by aikoaiko

Agreed that the threat to Obama was real and the stolen rifle is big problem for him. The law against JHP is lunacy.

4. Only in NJ..
.. would bullets that are less likely to go through a person and hit an innocent bystander be outlawed. As if pistol caliber hollow point bullets are more likely to penetrate cops' body armor. Amazing when the stupidity reaches such a level.

6. Yes. For obvious reasons I will not expound
there are handgun cartridges that can defeat body armor. They would be legal in NJ. No not the FN "cop killa" 22. As for rifles they can defeat some armor, depending on the makeup of the bullet.

21. Doesn't matter.
Even if your vest can soak up a hit from a .44 magnum or a 30-30, you are going to be out of action until further notice. A concealable vest isn't a suit of armor, nor does it make one invincible. It might make a difference between being treated and released or tagged and bagged but you will know you've been shot. Concealable vests are an insurance policy and not a guarantee.

The armor that soldiers wear is a different matter. It's heavy and expensive. You won't catch a cop wearing it unless they know for a fact they're likely going to a gunfight.

24. In the days before you tube
Edited on Sat Oct-31-09 11:16 AM by Retired AF Dem
Richard Davis the owner of Second Chance vest company would put on a demo where he shot himself in the chest with a .44 (while wearing one of his vests) than shoot five bowling pins off of a table. History is full of stories of people being hit by powerful rifle and pistol rounds without a vest on and they continued to fight.

22. Yes. This graph will help
It shows rifle-cartridge muzzle energy (blue bars) and kick (purple bars).

Handgun energy ranges from about 250 ft-lbs (.38 Special) to 350 ft-lbs (.45 Auto, 9mm Luger) to 425 ft-lbs (.40 S&W) to 500 ft-lbs (.357 Magnum) to 800 ft-lbs (.44 Magnum).

Even "small" rifle cartridges have considerably more power than even a powerful handgun.

7. Um, no, hollow-point bullets are not better at penetrating body armor than full metal jacket bullets
:argh:

HP bullets tend to squash when they hit something tough. Armor-piercing bullets usually have a core made of some super-hard material like tungsten.

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!
Hollowpoints can penetrate body armor the same way fire extinguisher can cause fires.

they don't appear to know what end of a gun the bullet comes out of.

12. Banned "cop-killer bullets" are pointy and made of steel or hardened bronze.
Edited on Sat Oct-24-09 02:49 PM by benEzra
"Evil deadly dum-dum exploding hollowpoints" are blunt and made of soft lead with a relatively soft copper jacket.

The reporter should at least get his hysterical scare-buzzwords straight. (Does he write for the Daily Mail, too?)

And no, hollowpoints are NOT illegal to possess in your home in New Jersey; common misconception.

28. And it wasn't Teflon that made them armor-piercing
Because bullets like the brass-cored KTW would inflict significant wear on gun barrels, the bullet was coated in Teflon to smooth its passage and reduce barrel wear. Its armor-piercing capability was provided entirely by its hardness.

It should also be pointed out that the KTW wasn't developed for the purpose of defeating body armor. It was developed as a bullet for police use to provide added capability to punch through car doors and windows without deforming, since deformation would reduce its effectiveness against the occupant(s) of the vehicle.
