Police quiet on shooting's alleged bikie links
Police investigating a deadly shooting in Geelong, will not say whether they think the incident is bikie-related or linked to another non-fatal attack around the same time.

Brock Nightingale, 26, died after being shot in broad daylight at his Corio home on the outskirts of Geelong.

Another gun crime on an island with very strict controls on firearms, including bans.

1. I read the whole article-- admittedly not very long...
...but you'd think I'd have some clue what this story is about after reading the article. Huh?

2. Apparently "bikie" is Australian for a member of a motorcycle club
i.e. a biker.

4. reminds me of one of the ten warning signs of insanity...
...a'la Chevy Chase, although I don't remember where he said it-- maybe SNL?-- but one of the ten warning signs of insanity was walking into a motorcycle bar and yelling "All you pussy bikie's eat shit!" That just doesn't have quite the same ring as the original!

3. Good case in point
In countries with responsible firearms regulations- it's criminals who shoot each other- not husbands, wives and family members. Or kids. Or "postal" workers.

Or random mass shootings by "ordinary" folks people who snap.

5. "responsible firearms regulations" = ban
So you're saying no husbands/wives ever kill each other with guns in Australia?......or Kenya?...or Britain?......or.....

6. There's no "ban" in australian states
except for certain types of guns that have no use for anything other than shooting lots of people quickly....

On the other hand, there are regulations as to who and for what reason people can own guns (shooters' licenses)- as well as safety courses to be taken and inspections on methods to secure them.

7. Wow. Can you narrow that down a bit for us?
"except for certain types of guns that have no use for anything other than shooting lots of people quickly"

What guns are those? Are they a certain shape? Color? made out of certain materials?

Or are they just ones you find scary looking?

8. What I like is
" No "ban" EXCEPT for certain types."
Now there is either a BAN or there is not a BAN. Which is it?

9. That's right- Austrlains are smart enough to know that there's a difference
and aren't running around so afraid of being shot or accosted by some "bad guy" that they feel the need to endanged their families in order to "protect themselves" nor have they felt the need to create the countries' most draconian criminal "justice" system- which rivals many third world nations.

Before someone can buy a firearm, he or she must obtain a Permit To Acquire. The first permit has a mandatory 28 day delay before it is first issued. In some states (e.g. Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales), this is waived for second and subsequent firearms of the same class.

For each firearm a "Genuine Reason" must be given, relating to pest control, hunting, target shooting, or collecting. Self-defense is not accepted as a reason for issuing a licence, though it may be legal under certain circumstances to use a legally-held firearm for self-defence.

Firearms categories

Firearms in Australia are grouped into Categories with different levels of control. The categories are:

* Category A: rimfire rifle (not semi-automatic), shotguns (not pump-action or semi-automatic), air rifles, and paintball markers.

* Category B: centrefire rifles (not semi-automatic), muzzleloading firearms made after 1 January 1901.

* Category C: semi-automatic rimfire rifles holding 10 or fewer rounds and pump-action or semi-automatic shotguns holding 5 or fewer rounds. (Restricted: only primary producers, occupational shooters, collectors and some clay target shooters can own functional Category C firearms)

* Category D: semi-automatic centrefire rifles, pump-action/semi-automatic shotguns holding more than 5 rounds (functional Category D firearms are restricted to occupational shooters; collectors may own deactivated Category D firearms).

* Category H: handguns including air pistols, deactivated handguns and guns less than 65 cm long. Target shooters are limited to handguns of .38 calibre or less.

(Participants in "approved" competitions may acquire handguns up to .45", currently Single Action Shooting and Metallic Silhouette. IPSC shooting is not "approved" for the larger calibres, for unstated reasons. Category H barrels must be at least 100 mm (3.94") long for revolvers, and 120 mm (4.72") for semi-automatic pistols, and magazines are restricted to 10 rounds. Handgun collectors are exempt from the laws stated above.)

* Category R/E: restricted weapons: machine guns, rocket launchers, assault rifles, flame-throwers, anti-tank guns, Howitzers, artillery, .50-calibre BMG weapons, etc. (Collectors in some states only, weapons must be comprehensively deactivated. Deactivated firearms are still subject to the same storage and licensing requirements as 'live' firearms in many states.)

Antique firearms can in some states be legally bought without licences. In other states they are subject to the same requirements as modern firearms.

All single-shot muzzleloading firearms manufactured before 1 January 1901 are considered antique firearms. Four states require licences for antique percussion revolvers and cartridge repeating firearms but in Queensland and Victoria a person may possess such a firearm without a license, so long as the firearm is registered.

10. Only problem is, the bikies don't seem to be obeying the law...
Perhaps you should have a word with them. I'm sure that will straighten them right up!

12. So...
Self-defense is not accepted as a reason for issuing a licence,

If you happen to be a witness against a bikie, or if you are the former significant other of a bikie who has been threatened, you are denied access to effective defense against said bikie....nice..

13. Is this a great country or what?
We don't need to explain why we want to exercise our rights to the government before exercising them. The overwhelming majority of our citizens do just that, within the boundaries of the law and in a civil manner. We don't need a ban here. Americans generally don't like bans. If you do like them, there are plenty of places in the world willing to regulate your life.

Blech, that just turns the stomach. The most fundamental reason for firearms is defense, yet this is not a valid "genuine reason" to own one in Australia.

Disgusting.

16. So tell me. If your goal is the murder suicide of your wife and yourself
what difference does it make if the perpetrator uses a category A or D weapon? Both will do the job.

I apologize for the morbid overtone of this post, but seriously. What damn difference does it make? A single-shot break action shotgun would be sufficient for the job, since the shooter would have plenty of time to reload.

The only time it would make any difference at all, would be in a mass shooting, like Port Arthur, which is an extremely rare type of event.. Lacking guns, that sort of mad dog will usually go for explosives, by the way. Happened at Columbine. (The timers on the bombs set to greet the emergency responders at Columbine didn't work)

I'm with you on registration. It would go a LONG ways towards keeping the guns out of the hands of people not legally eligible to own firearms. You'd still have thefts, but there would be a significant reduction in grey and black market firearms.

Nice application of Brady-talk there, hopefully non-firearms types will see through your fog of deception.

14. Except for every popular type of gun made in the last 100 years.
Including all modern rifles, all modern shotguns, and all handguns. And the fact that simply owning a banned gun for self defense is considered illegal. Yeah, that's not a ban--it's just that almost everyone is legally prevented from owning one. :eyes:
