Police: Homeowner Killed Would-Be Burglar
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Police said a homeowner shot and killed a would-be burglar Friday.
The incident occurred at 2168 SW Pruitt St. shortly after 3 p.m.
Port St. Lucie police said a man arrived at the home and tried to force his way inside.
The homeowner, identified as Josh Moore, went to the bedroom and got a shotgun. Moore and the intruder fought over the gun, which discharged and hit the intruder in the chest, investigators said.
Police got a search warrant to go into the house where the victim was discovered.

1. This is happening more and more frequently.
Too bad house invaders don't tend to keep up with the news.
They might rethink their tactics.

2. How was the intruder tried to force his way in and
ended up fighting over the shotgun? Sounds to me like he actually entered the house.

5. If not for that shotgun, the burglar would simply have apologized and walked away
There wouldn't have been anything worth fighting over.

;(

13. Dude...
They are victims, not criminals. If not for the gun that settled this grievance, we would have found that this poor victim was indeed just there with the utmost honorable intentions. He was not there to do any harm. Sheesh!

12. So shooting a home invader to protect a 14 year old girl is cowardly?

16. I am under no obligation to give a burglar a fair fight.
I will take every advantage I can get. If he has broken into my home illegally, I am allowed to, and will, assume that he is armed and act accordingly. That is the reality. This isn't a Nerf world.

18. Yes you are...
1. Assume the bad guy (the actual victim) is actually there with honest intentions.
2. If attacked, still assume the victim is there to help you. Maybe he is just there to kill that moth that has been eating your sweaters.
3. Remember at all times that we live in an advanced society, if you calmly tell the victim that they are hurting you, they will stop.
4. Since I just proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that there is no need for violence, there is obviously no reason to engage in a fight at all. Let alone a fair one.

When will you get it?

17. What would you have done?...
Made the perp laugh himself to death watching you beg for your life? Immobilized him by helping him load up all your shit, thus trapping him in his car? Make him realize the error of his ways by reaching out to the poor dear and inviting him in for hot spiced wine and sliced munster while simultaneously empowering him with warm fuzzies and a deep respect for life and the law? How would you handle such a situation, ace?

11. UPDATE: more details..
http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2010/jan/25/police-identify-man-killed-friday-in-port-st/

PORT ST. LUCIE — Police on Monday identified the man killed in a Friday confrontation in the 2100 block of Southwest Pruitt Street as 32-year-old Edward Lavern Yearling Jr.

Yearling, of the 900 block of Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Pierce, was shot with a 12-gauge shotgun during a Friday afternoon struggle with 20-year-old Josh Moore.

Moore’s father, James, said the man whom police identified as Yearling came to the home earlier in the week to ask questions about a girl that James Moore said had dated one of his friends, and who also had phoned him. James Moore said he played back the recorded phone message to show it wasn’t romantic in nature.

Yearling pushed his way into the home, then Moore retreated to a bedroom with his 14 year old sister. Yearling broke into the room and grabbed the shotgun Moore was holding.
