Gun brandishing off-duty Fireman puts three schools on lockdown
http://www.chicoer.com/ci_14247874

Another fine upstanding civil servant who thought the appropriate response to some kids shining a laser pointer at him (from across the street) was to pull out his gun and point it at them.

This caused three different schools to be put on lock down after the "man with gun" call.

More good judgement by a CCW holder.

Obviously, photons represent a justification for deadly force. Clearly.

2. How many times
can we repeat that no one here believes that holding a CCW makes you a perfect citizen; or that sometimes people with CCW's still do fucked up shit?

If you're trying to prove that sometimes CCW holders do bad/illegal/dangerous things, ok. We believe you. We've actually never claimed anything different.

If you're trying to prove that a significant number of CCW holders do these things (of course, significant is a loaded word- let's say, statistically significant?); then you continue to fail. You would need literally thousands of examples.

Nobody claims that CCW holders don't commit crimes. We do claim that proprortionally fewer CCW crimes are committed by CCW holders than by many other groups, including both the general public at large and law enforcement agents/officers; just to name a couple of those groups.

You get the difference, right?

12. I don't know why Obama scares...
gun owners. He's done absolutely nothing to attack the 2nd Amendment since he came into office. Other than Holder shooting off his mouth and getting muzzled it's been pretty quiet. He's been downright reasonable. How refreshing.

17. Hardly. Obama is doing a good job on the gun issue...
by ignoring the BS and scaremongering by the repubs at the Brady Campaign, and focusing on real problems.

http://www.bradycampaign.org/media/press/view/1214/

Of course, you'd rather Obama had pulled a Bill Clinton and spent all of his political capital restricting rifle handgrips that stick out. Because the sky is falling, and protruding handgrips are going to kilz us all.

15. This guy invoked his 5th amendment,
So we really dont know the whole story. However in reading the article I came across this little tidbit...

"The victims admitted to police they were using a laser pointer, and an Airsoft pistol was found in their vehicle. Carrillo said they didn't brandish the pistol during the incident and no charges are pending against them."

Now an airsoft pistol looks an awful lot like a regular pistol.

This guy took the 5th, so we have no clue what his side of the story is.

This guy may be an idiot, or maybe these dorks pointed the airsoft at him, maybe they were being argumentative and he saw the airsoft in the car, thought it was real and took that as a threat.

There is just not enough info here to make a judgement either way.

4. How about you get your laser pointer,
hide behind a wall, and point it at ANY police officer, see what the reaction is..good luck with that little experiment. BTW you do know that laser sights on pistols is not at all uncommon, no?

9. Clearly, "shall issue" laws are to blame!
If the local sheriff or police chief hadn't been forced to give this guy a CCW permit...

Oh wait, it's California.

Butte county does issue with a shall issue policy.

18. That's as may be
... but it's still at the sheriff's discretion to implement that policy.

21. It's not a county ordinance; it's the sheriff's policy
Edited on Wed Jan-27-10 07:11 AM by Euromutt
California has a preemption statute, meaning that counties and cities can only pass ordinances concerning firearms that state law allows them to. And while California state law oulines certain requirements before someone can be issued a license, it is ultimately left to the discretion of the county sheriff or city chief of police whether or not to issue a permit. The sheriff of Butte County, apparently, has decided that he will issue a permit to any applicant who meets the criteria set by state law. And under state law, nobody can tell him he can't.
