Colorado State University thinking of banning handguns on campus...
and some students are pissed.

Does this mean they will still be able to carry an unconcealed weapon into class? Shotguns, maybe? You just never know when a duck will fly into the room.

(Jeez, if only I could have carried when I went to City College in New York.)

1. There's nothing wrong with CCW.
"Gun-Free Zones" only benefit criminals.

2. Agreed...
Funny that these mass shootings never happen at NRA meetings or gun shows, isn't it?

3. Is this because they've had a problem?
And if not, wouldn't that suggest that all the hand-wringing scenarios predicted by the antis have (yet again) failed to materialize?

4. Ah, my alma mater . . . funny, when I went there in the 70s . . .
There were no guns on campus (outside of the campus police). And there were never any shootings on campus either.

I guess it was just a more innocent age.

5. Didn't Colorado State....
have a highly regarded gunsmithing program? Or is that another college in Colorado? I remember seeing their ads for decades.

7. Could be . . . as a university, it's always offered a very diverse curriculum . . .
By "no guns on campus" I was specifically referring to weapons carried for personal reasons outside of any formal school program. As an example, the ROTC program certainly involved guns on campus, albeit under very strict controls.

9. And lots of
skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, fishing, and hunting students. Did they allow the students who spent great amounts of their spare time hunting a place to store their hunting guns?

10. Not sure I get your point. ROTC was (still is, presumably) a formal program of the university.

Even though it was sponsored and administered largely by the Army (maybe Air Force too?). Recreational pursuits seem outside this discussion.

12. Just wondering
what the school did with those who used their guns for hunting or various shooting sports? Was there an armory on campus? Just wondering.

13. Good question. It's been so long ago, I can't be sure.
I don't recall any such provision in the on-campus dormitories, so I'm presuming they just weren't allowed.

It really *was* a more innocent age. I'd bet money that all student-owned guns were for hunting only (a smattering for those with some sort of part-time security work) and not for personal protection. I know the presumption was general that no one had a handgun on campus. Not sure the campus cops were universally armed.

8. I don't see anything in the link about
shotguns or rifles. I am guessing...no, actually I know, a fair amount of students who choose CO to go to college are hunters and fishers. I was an avid hunter when I graduated high school and almost choose a school in Wyoming for the decent education and world class hunting. I didn't, but many do. Colorado for their big game. Wyoming for their vast big game, upland and waterfowl, Kansas, iowa & Nebraska for the best upland and good waterfowl states which also have colleges. There are many students who have guns with them at school.

This is about concealed handguns and whether the college is allowed under state law to prohibit legally owned and carried guns..that's it..they obviously have no ability to do anything beyond a policy..no criminal issue, they can probably suspend or expel the student. We will see if a bill emerges, I'm betting one will.

11. i don't know about colorado's protection but in WA state
no public university can prohibit firearms. i have heard some have tried via policy, but i have yet to see anybody trot out ONE example of any student being successfully disciplined for carrying a handgun on campus concealed with a valid CCW. iow, they have the policy as a scare tactic arguably, but it's unenforceable. if they ever tried to discipline a student for carrying, they would lose a major court case, which is why, to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been done. i went to a private college here for grad school, and they CAN discipline students for carrying. i chose to carry in violation of their policy. my choice. if i got caught, they would be free to discipline me, but that's the risk i willingly took.
