Police say a man with a knife raced through the parking lot just after 3:00 p.m.. Witnesses say the man chased a delivery driver and others, but was killed when he tried to lunge his knife at one driver leaving the parking lot. The driver pulled a gun and killed his attacker on the spot.

1. Exactly correct
You may never need a gun, but the one time you do could save your life.

7. Well stated, sir.
I always have to laugh when people argue against the right to carry firearms, using the logic "I've lived here for X years and I've never felt the NEED to carry a gun." As if their experiences justify stripping the entire population of their rights.

"I've lived here for X years and I've never needed my right to trial by jury, my freedom of speech, my fire extinguisher, my seat belt, my first aid kit in my car, etc. etc."

4. Can we take away all of the knives, please.
Can we please outlaw all of the knives, please!

Or, we can arm all the citizens with guns, and the knives will take care of themselves.

9. Maybe there wasn't time
and maybe had he done that the guy with the knife would have killed someone else.

it's not bang bang

it's bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang bang (take a breath and reload if necessary) IF your life is in imminent danger.

10. Maybe it was. Neither you nor I was there. He did the right thing in my
book. IF he could have driven away that still would have left this nut out there to harm others.

11. Have you ever been in the queue to exit a parking lot? You can't always drive out into the street.
Locals say that parking lot was pretty busy that time of day.

3pm, schools letting out, kids around. Not to mention that the gun-owner was actually stabbed by the guy.

12. Sure the
Cowardly way out so you can go home and read about the kids that were stabbed by the lunatic with the knife, then congratulate yourself for escaping...

16. Damned if we do, damed if we don't.
In another thread, a regular gun-controllers posted that CCWers were too cowardly to get involved to save others by shooting a bad guy. So here a CCWer gets involved and a gun-controller gripes that he should have driven away instead of getting shooting the bad guy.

18. Witnesses say the shooter was stabbed, but appeared to be okay.
Did you not read that part? The guy who shot in self-defense was already wounded by the guy with the knife.

20. You should read what Gandhi has to say about this kind of incident.
"Taking life may be a duty... Suppose a man runs amuck and goes furiously about, sword in hand, and killing anyone that comes in his way, and no one dares to capture him alive. Anyone who despatches this lunatic will earn the gratitude of the community as a benevolent man."

Note the expression "duty." Would you like a source?

21. Of course Gandhi *would* say something like that, being a well-known militarist.
As some other wise person once said:

"It's not what you don't know, it's what you think you know that ain't so..."

He was speaking of liberals at the time.
