1. You should not do both of those on the same day...

According to some around here you can rip a hole in space-time.

Sort of like when matter touches anti-matter.

4. Welcome. To voting as a democrat, and to owning a gun - as a democrat.
I have been doing both for over 45 years, and at times felt like part of a very small group. It has become very apparent over the last few years that we 2nd amendment Dems are a much larger group than anyone ever realized, and I thank the rabid anti-gun crowd for contributing to our growth by scaring those who were contemplating owning a gun...you scared a lot of people into gun ownership with all your rants about banning evil guns, and I thank you all for your unintentional support.

5. Indeed, without all the crazy rants against guns I might not have seen all the logical
sane arguments why owning a gun is a good idea.

7. Welcome to the club - Mosin Nagant Rules
Edited on Tue Mar-16-10 05:49 PM by DonP
Stuff you know if you have an AK

- It works though you have never cleaned it. Ever.
- You can accessorize you rifle with a new muzzle brake or a nice stock set.

Stuff you know if you have an AR

- You have $9 per ounce special non-detergent synthetic Teflon infused oil for cleaning.
- Your rifle's accessories are eight times more valuable than your rifle.

Stuff you know if you have a Mosin Nagant

- It was last cleaned in Berlin in 1945.
- Your rifle's "accessory" is a small tin can with a funny lid, but it's buried under a ruined apartment building somewhere in Budapest.

9. Ha, I had to use mineral solvents to clean the thing, SO much grease in there.
Everything came packed with grease, gotta love it.

10. Congratulations on undergoing your rite of initiation as an owner of a military surplus C&R firearm
Cosmoline is your friend, though it has an odd way of showing it; it's what has kept a decades-old military surplus rifle in the condition in which you got it, even if it is a pain in the hole to remove it. Getting the cosmoline off a rifle is a rite of initiation, in that you don't truly own a milsurp C&R weapon until you've spent many hours with a stack of rags and various solvents (e.g. mineral spirits) and/or means of applying enough heat to get the cosmoline above melting point (e.g. an oven, a steam cleaner, or a black plastic garbage bag hung from a tree in summer). Until you do, it's a book you've never opened, much less read.

I recently cleaned off my own first C&R acquisition, a Yugoslav M59/66 SKS variant (I have a particular interest in the former Yugoslavia). I found a hand-held steam cleaner did a great job on the larger metal parts, like the receiver/barrel assembly and the bolt carrier, but I still had to let the bolt itself soak in mineral spirits for the better part of 24 hours before I could even disassemble it (with a brass punch and a hammer) to get the gunge out of the inside. Still, it does give a sense of achievement to get the weapon back into a functioning condition, doesn't it?

But while that is an achievement, registering to vote is a more important step in asserting your status as a citizen, so congratulations on that score are even more heart-felt.

11. Thankyou your post means alot to me.
Cleaned up the pouches and tool kit it leaked onto, then took the bolt out cleaned it till I could cock and uncock it with one hand easily and ran about a thousand rags wet with Mineral Solvents over and through the gun before it was more or less clean.

Pain in the arse, but it looks and feels brand new now.

"I remember the day when we first met..."

Gosh I don't miss cosmo at all. But you're right, it kept rust at bay from my M28/30 for many, many years.

14.  You will NEVER get all of the cosmoline out of the stock.
If you think you have then set the stock out in the hot sun for a few hours. SURPRISE!!!

Now you need:

M38 carbine

M44 carbine

91/30 sniper

Dragoon rifle

Don't forget the Finnish Models!!

Welcome to the wide world of M/N's.

21.  As for ammo.
If you shoot commercial ammo then no problem cleaning, just use a good solvent and oil.. If you choose to shoot MilSurp then a special cleaning is needed. Most, if not ALL 7.62X54R have corrosive mercuric primers. These are stable for a LONG time, which is why the ComBlok countries used them. HOWEVER they leave a small amount of mercuric salts in the barrel. To remove these salts a special cleaner was developed, that is poisonous. The easiest way to remove these salts is to remove the bolt, point the barrel down and pour a cup ot two of hot water down the bore. Clean with solvent, brush and patch, then repeat the hot water. Dry with a patch and oil. Check the bore a few days later to make sure.

Sources for ammo. Modern ammo is non corrosive and reloadable.

25. That is comic gold.
I laughed the whole way through it the first time I read it. I'm an AR kinda guy, but I like both the AK and the Mosin, so it was extra funny, I think.

8. Another Noisy Maggot convert!!
One of the few rifles where your accesories are guaranteed to be worth more than the price of the rifle. And probably the most fun-per-dollar-investment in the shooting world.

It saved Mother Russia from many invaders.

I wish I could spare the change to get one (even as cheap as they are).

24. WHAT~!>>?
Ditch that Ruskie junk and get an AR!!!!!1!!!ONE!

No, seriously, the Mosin is a solid weapon. Literally. Like, if you run out of ammo, you can just use it as a club. If the length of pull is too short, just put on a Russian overcoat, and that should fix it!

Welcome to the wonderful world of exercising your rights. NEVER STOP.

26. It is not considered un-man/womanly to use a good slip-on recoil pad...
when temperatures are too hot for the afore-mentioned Russian Army great-coat and other cold-weather clothing. In fact, with that wonderful steel butt-plate (highly efficient for butt-stroking the peasants in the teeth...) it is nearly a requisite.

If you are into severe self-discipline, ten rounds at the range without a pad, wearing only a T-shirt, should be sufficient punishment for nearly any transgressions.
