Police to record race of stopped drivers (IL)

Police agencies statewide are gearing up to comply with a new law that, beginning Thursday, requires them to record the race of any person pulled over in a traffic stop.

The law seeks ultimately to curb racial profiling by collecting data that will be analyzed to assess the extent to which race is a factor in traffic stops.

In most cases of racial profiling, police stop motorists of certain racial or ethnic groups because they think members of the groups are more likely to commit certain types of crime, according to the American Civil Liberties Union

how do they factor in the race proportions of drivers driving through that area?

How do they count mulattos?

Are they distinguishing Koreans from Japanese and Chinese, micronesian, etc?

I don't believe this is real.

"Law enforcement agencies must furnish the data to IDOT"

Why don't they give them to Bush and then that can read,

"Law enforcement agencies must furnish the data to IDIOT"

3. Already doing it

At the Sheriff's dept where I volunteer my time we have been recording this info for close to 3 years now. Name, age, gender, race (we don't get specific like Korean or Thai or Cambodian, they are all considered Asian), time, location, whether a search was initiated, whether that search resulted in an arrest, whether the stop itself resulted in an arrest, etc.

It all goes into an Access database so that it can be sorted and viewed in a dozen different ways.

4. It's a totally Democrat controlled state too!

I do not understand how this is happening here.

We have a liberal Democrat controlled state house, governors office and, of course, Cook County firmly in our grasp.

Why is this data being collected after years of fitghting to keep race out of things back in the 60's. It is setting the clock back 40 years and we have no one to blame but oursevles.

My greatest fear is that it will find its way into the mainstream press as a sensationalized, out of context statistic like ; "More blacks arrested for traffic violations" type of headline.

5. Actually

I think they're doing it to see if there is any unfair racial profiling going on. Usually such statistics are gathered for data to HELP minorities, like when they ask what race you are before you take the ACT. If they see minorities on average get lower scores, they can say that minorities should get more funding or scholarships or whatever because obviously the schools they are in usually arn't up to scale with those in white neighborhoods. Either way, it sensationalizes the race issue, but I guess that's what helping people based on the color of their skin does.
