Police: 3-year-old dies of self-inflicted gunshot at Sheriff Deputy's Home
Roseville police say a 3-year-old girl is dead after she apparently shot herself while inside a Placer County Sheriff's deputy's home.

Authorities said officers arrived at the deputy's Roseville home late Tuesday afternoon to find the girl in her mother's arms with a gunshot wound to her right side.

She was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and then transported by helicopter to UC Davis Children's Hospital. She died later Tuesday night.

Police spokeswoman Dee Dee Gunther said investigators believe the girl lived in the deputy's home, but officials said it was unclear how the deputy was related to the girl and her mother.

Police Sgt. Darin DeFreece said investigators would be looking into what happened to the safeguards he said the deputy had in place to keep firearms away from children.

A shame. And I know most police agencies school their people on keeping their weapons away from the kids at home.

1. Absolutely.
I don't think you could find any US police academy that does not stress firearm safety, especially in regards to safe storage and children.

3. You don't know many cops then.
Through the door, off comes the duty belt, heads for the fridge, pop a top again. You haven't seen cavalier gun safety until you've hung out behind the Thin Blue Line for a while. Some of them are simply breathtaking. Not all are like that but some really make you wonder.

I'm not saying that's the case with this officer but it speaks volumes that a toddler shot herself in his house.

4. Even sadder. So any home with a gun is more likely to suffer family gun deaths.

No matter what the training.

Sad.

5. More likely to have a gun death.
They're still relatively rare compared to things like like house fires or drowning.

If a gun isn't present in the home then of course you have a %100 chance of not being shot by a gun in the home. I suppose you could still get shot by someone bringing a gun to such a home but then you'd have a gun in the home so the data would get all hosed.

8. It is the self fulfilling statistic
If you don't own a gun than you have a 100% chance of not getting shot by your own gun.

You should be more concerned about falling down the stairs than firearms accidents. Wearing a helmet everyday is more likely to protect your life than avoiding guns.

Just look at how many people have diabetes. Pepsi is more likely to kill you than Smith and Wesson.

6. Speak for yourself
It may have been the last home YOU would expect it in.
