CCW holder stops bus hijacking
Interesting case, this. A guy carjacks somebody, leads police on a car chase until his stolen vehicle is so damaged he's forced to bail. Then he tries to hijack a moving bus, boarding it and assaulting the driver. A CCW holder in the car behind the bus saw what was happening and intervened, ending up with the carjacker getting shot in the chest. The carjacker runs back to his stolen car (which is now on fire) and waits for the cops to show up.

HOUSTON – A wild crime spree ended in gunfire Tuesday when a citizen shot a suspect who was trying to hijack a Metro bus, Houston police said.

According to HPD, it all began at about 5:30 p.m. when Henry Hankston III, 37, carjacked a person who was visiting friends at a residence in the 5200 block of Fair Green in southeast Houston.

"Suspect had approached them, appeared to be under the influence of some kind of drugs, apparently came up and started assaulting the person and took his vehicle from him," said Sgt. Robert Torres, with HPD’s Homicide Division.

"When he got to the intersection, he hit three other vehicles until he got to the point where his vehicle was disabled, got out of that vehicle and ran up to a bus that was turning through the intersection," Torres said.

Torres said the suspect entered the bus and began assaulting the driver, in an apparent attempt to hijack the bus, until the driver of a car idling behind the bus noticed what was happening.

"This person is a licensed concealed handgun carrier. He got out of the vehicle went to the bus to try to intervene in the assault that was taking place," he said. "He did pull the suspect away from the driver and engaged in a physical confrontation with the suspect."

So we have a CCW holder attempting to stop a crime in progress that he's not originally involved in. Playing Rambo or Dirty Harry, if you will.

The gun magazines that cover this topic generally advise not getting involved in other people's public conflicts. After all, you don't know who the good guys and bad guys are, and you don't know if you're interfering with, say, undercover cops making an arrest.

Different circumstances, though. Did the guy do the right thing?

Obviously it turned out well... bad guy apprehended, no major injuries to the bystanders, no hostage situation, no further danger. But should the guy have drawn his gun and intervened?

2. Sounds like he intervened and then drew his gun when that wasn't enough
Ordinarily I'd say it's best to avoid getting into someone else's business, but an obvious random attack, especially on a big group like that, kind of a civic duty to help out if you are able.

4. That was my take also. The guy did good. No telling what would have
happened to the bus driver had this armed citizen not stepped in.

3. I think there is a duty to help people in distress if you are able to.
Now running in, guns blazing, is obiously the wrong approach. I don't that happened here.
Sounds like this guy tried to intervene physically but at some was unable to deter the crimal - then used his firearm.
More information would be nice.

5. We don't get to know how things are going to turn out.
I would never tell anyone not to intervene. I caution students, however, to be very, very careful and fully aware of the possible ramifications. And, yes, it's true that one may very well not know all the details of the situation.

6. In this instance, the guy seems to have done the right thing
I'd don't know how much the CHL holder was able to observe, but at the very least, you can tell the difference between a bus driver and someone who is assaulting that bus driver.

And certainly, when you have a guy who's just trashed his (stolen) car by colliding it with four others, injuring all four drivers in the process, you emphatically do not want such a person gaining control of a bus. We're talking imminent threat to life and limb of everyone on the road!

8. Every CCW holder in such incidents has to make a quick judgment whether she/he has an opportunity to

help the intended victims.

Seems like the CCW holder had a choice of calling 911 and waiting 10-30 minutes for LEO to arrive or putting his own life in danger and helping.

I refuse to judge his decision.

9. I'll judge it
He did the right thing, the right way, and put himself in significant danger while doing so.
