BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter
Six years after the state Supreme Court dismissed his $433 million lawsuit against the gun industry, Mayor Daley today called for a change of venue — to the World Court normally reserved for disputes between nations and crimes against humanity.

Wrapping up the sixth annual Richard J. Daley Global Cities Forum, Daley convinced more than a dozen of his counterparts from around the world to approve a resolution urging "redress against the gun industry through the courts of the world" in The Hague.

"This is coming from international mayors. They're saying, 'We’re tired of your guns, America. ... We don't want those anymore because guns kill and injure people,' " Daley told a news conference at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

SNIP

Daley’s 1998 lawsuit accused the gun industry of creating a public nuisance by using irresponsible suburban gun shops to flood the city with guns that traffickers supplied to criminals.

The city and the county sought reimbursement for policing, emergency services and prosecutions tied to gun violence using nuisance laws normally reserved for polluters. In 2004, the state Supreme Court refused to create, what it called "an entirely new species of public nuisance liability."

I think Daley is getting desperate. He suspects what kind of ruling he is about to see from the SCOTUS and is flailing in the water as he sinks.

American gun manufacturers would completely ignore any kind of ruling from the so-called World Court.

2. Neither Daley nor the Sun-Times know what the "World Court" even is
Six years after the state Supreme Court dismissed his $433 million lawsuit against the gun industry, Mayor Daley today called for a change of venue — to the World Court normally reserved for disputes between nations and crimes against humanity.

Those are two different institutions; disputes between states are the purview of the International Court of Justice. Violations of international humanitarian law are the purview of the International Criminal Court.

Since "the gun industry" isn't a state, it's outside the ICJ's bailiwick. And since the United States isn't a party to the Rome Statute, the ICC has no jurisdiction over violations of international humanitarian law that take place on U.S. territory and don't involve citizens of non-signatories, which is leaving aside the fact that "the gun industry" hasn't committed any violations of international humanitarian law to begin with.

In short, Daley's shit-ignorant (big surprise), and the Sun-Times' staff are equally shit-ignorant for not being able to figure out that Daley's shit-ignorant.

4. Thanks for the info.
I have to admit that I didn't know what the World Court was either.

6. The "Real" objective for Daley ...
... make sure that he gets some headlines that look, to the less informed, that he's "doing something" about the youth shooting up their own neighborhoods. He has no intention of actually hiring the cops it would take to have any measurable impact in Englewood, Pilsen etc.

He knows this "Going to the Hague" is a totally BS issue and he has no standing to file for any relief, financial or regulatory. Does he really think that the court will ask the UN to have a bunch of Blue helmets drive up the Connecticut valley or out to the Quad cities and shut down the handful of remaining US manufacturers? Or maybe they'll award a judgement against FAL to write him a big, fat check? Hell no.

Even allowing that it took Daley 3 tries to pass the bar, and there were questions on whether he actually took the test that last time or sent in a ringer, (so he could be made a states attorney by Daddy), he can't be that stupid ... well ... probably anyway.

He's finally worn out the patience of all the Downstate Dems that used to throw him a gun control bone every few years to shut him up as long as it didn't impact their local pheasant hunting or trap shooting and he is flailing now. He'll be re-elected by his machine no matter what he says or does and he really is a true believer in not allowing the peasants to have the ability to defend themselves. He feels you have to keep those peasants under control. His old man did it by literally putting up wire barricades between the projects and the Bridgeport neighborhood they lived in to keep "those people" in their place. That's just a little too obvious these days, so Richie's approach is to make sure every neighborhood has to depend on him and his pet police superintendent, the one that runs from the sound of gun fire.

This stunt is more aimed at making the headlines something other than; "Chicago faces major budget shortfall". "Chicago school graduation rate drops below 50%", "Police still with no contract after 3 years" etc.

7. International "tribunals:" a sure sign someone's getting nowhere...
This follows the efforts a couple years earlier where gun-control advocates vowed to take their "case" to the U.N. and other "international" bodies; in short, we cannot win using the sovereign democratic process in the U.S., so we'll just take it to a higher forum, whatever that is.
