Police: Homeowner shoots would-be burglar
Edited on Wed May-12-10 08:45 PM by oneshooter
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A homeowner opened fire on a man breaking into his home in northwest Harris County. The would-be thief broke into the house on Heather Hill Street around 10:30am Wednesday. The homeowner said he was in the shower, heard the noise and grabbed a gun.
Lt. Jeff Stauber with the Harris County Sheriff's Department Safe Home Task Force said, "As he came into the living room, he spotted the suspect leaning inside his house from the window he had broken out."
That's when the man told deputies he fired a single shot, hitting the home invasion suspect in the face.
The wounded suspect fled, but he made it just a few miles before deputies caught up with him in a fast food parking lot near Veteran's Memorial and West Mount Houston. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, but deputies believe there could be a second person involved. Neighbors say burglaries in the Northwest Park neighborhood have become all too common.

Probably used birdshot. Needs to change to buckshot.

1. Is this a Democrat's sense of justice? Or is this Clint Eastwood in some gun lover's wet dream?

2. For those without a gun or
those that don't want to shoot anyone, keep people out with home security. There are now several companies that make window film that can stop intruders. On the first one, scroll down to demonstration on the left and watch the window break a metal baseball bat.

These film are getting cheaper and can be installed by the home owner. Even cheaper locks can stop the intruder from raising the window after it is broken. Also available are cheap wireless window alarms.

Stay safe

4. As usual you know nothing
I'm well armed, only unlike you I want to deter crime rather than have my macho dream of shooting a bad guy come true. I encourage all legal citizens to own guns and also hope they never have to use them. Unlike some people here that would rather shoot at the first opportunity rather than take any precautions that would prevent a shooting.

6. Macho dreams?
What an unworthy canard.

I've been a gun owner for 14 years. I've never used or pointed a weapon at another human being and I hope I never do.

"I'm well armed"

And you're defending someone who would cheerfully take your rights away. SU is a fundamentalist. I know the issue isn't B/W and you know that but he doesn't.

You know what they say about people who assume?

7. I didn't look at the post #
you were responding to, sorry.
Isn't OS a gun owner also? I think he has a right to his view and I saw nothing anti about the post.

I've been a gun owner for over 45 years and never had as many gun rights as I do now. I can't remember any big stir back in the 60s about how few or restrictive our rights were back then.

8. He certainly has a right to his view.
I would never try to silence someone because they disagreed with me. But I do believe in challenging views. OS is, I was responding to sharesunited.

Gun rights are becoming more secure every day and that's a great thing. I remember reading about people worrying in '60s about the various rights movements and firearms. (Black Panthers)

10. "only unlike you I want to deter crime rather than have my macho dream of

shooting a bad guy come true."

Despite all of your protestations and moderate posturing your true colors are exposed with statements like this. A pretty ugly remark, IMO.

13. No, 'this' is what happens when one is foolish enough to break into someone's home uninvited...
Silly rabbit.

9. Some would argue birdshot is effective for repelling an intruder.
I'm not one of them, but it made me want to discuss. You are likely correct that the homeowner had a smaller load like birdshot. No issue with over-penetration, it can be lethal, (so can a .22 short round if you hit a vital organ), but often times it is not effective. The common thinking is hit an intruder even with birdshot, and they ain't hanging around. The case here, if your ammo deduction is correct, is an example of it working out for the homeowner.

But I agree with you, when mine and my family's lives are at risk, I don't want a minimum amount of force needed to protect myself. I don't want to ever deal with the emotional fallout of killing another person, but I'm not looking to be killed, either, and I'm not ken on rolling the dice when my life is on the line. Let's say the intruder is on meth, for example, birdshot won't stop his progress. And I'm already committed to whatever rounds I have loaded.

12.  Load buckshot first, and top off with a round of small shot.
If the first one dosn't get his attention, the next ones will!
