Pew Research Center, Gun Ruling, dominated last weeks social media
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 10:47 AM by virginia mountainman
A few tid bits..

Although Supreme Court rulings rarely have been among the top social media topics, last week's decision bolstering the right to bear arms generated strong reaction in the blogosphere -- almost all of it from cheering gun advocates.

For the week of June 28-July 2, more than a quarter (28%) of the news links on blogs were about the ruling, making it the No. 1 subject, according to the New Media Index from the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism.

Last week's Second Amendment ruling limiting cities' and states' ability to prohibit gun ownership split the Supreme Court by a 5-4 margin along conservative-liberal lines. But there was no such divide in the blogosphere where gun rights supporters dominated, applauding the ruling as a victory for both gun owners and the Constitution.......

...Gun control advocates opposing the decision seemed almost completely absent from the online conversation.....

........The strong reaction last week by gun rights supporters exemplifies the grassroots nature of how news stories often gain traction in the blogosphere. Be it gun control, climate change or gay marriage, individuals who care passionately about a subject often come together quickly and strongly online.......

Emphasis mine..

4. No, I didn't.
Heller and McDonald, together, amount to a landmark decision on the order of importance such as Roe vs. Wade.

Different topic, just as important.

3. Not surprising...
Considering the number of bloggers that are pro-RKBA as opposed to the anti-RKBA.

5. Doesn't surprise me in the least.
With big media losing control to 'the news' in favor of the internet and next-gen services like twitter, facebook, et al, it doesn't surprise me at all that topic previously shunned or spun by big media would dominate.

No longer can anti-gun FUDDs and the like frame the gun control v personal liberty debate in their own terms in a 90s, top-down fashion. More and more people don't look to the evening news or morning paper to tell them what's important.

10. Good catch. Last month, a journalist called the War on Drugs "back burner"...
even as the topic swung around to the war in Mexico. You'd think some of these guys in MSM had a higher lens power if for no other reason than to see what's happening to "their jobs."

Instructive indication of the presence of Second Amendment issues in the country, especially as it registers in non-MSM stuff.
