Democrat candidates supporting firearm rights ...

Pro-Gun Dems May Get a Boost
July 26, 2010 - 10:50 AM | by: Molly Line

With the mid-terms looming large in a year where incumbents are expected to take a beating at the polls many Democratic candidates are favoring gun rights, aiming to win endorsements or positive ratings from pro-2nd amendment groups.

University of New Hampshire Professor of Politics, Andrew Smith, says Democrats started moving away from a strong anti-gun stance in the 90's when many in the party blamed the issue on massive political losses in Congress.

"I think it started with the 1994 elections where a lot of Democrats believe it was the NRA involvement in that election which caused the Democrats to lose the House and the Senate. So they backed off that issue," said Smith.

***snip***

"I think finally the message hit home that it's bad politics to be on the wrong side of the 2nd amendment at election time and I think you see that reflective in what's been happening on this issue amongst Democrats in Washington, DC and state legislatures around the country." said Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the National Rifle Association.

"Gun ownership in the country amid labor unions folks runs from a low of 48% in California to a high of 60, 70, 80% in states like Missouri, Tennessee, West Virginia. In the 2000 election, half of those union members had a firearm in their home voted for George Bush over Al Gore based on the gun issue and that cost Al Gore the presidency."

According to the center for responsive politics, a non-partisan group that tracks political spending, during the 2002 election cycle the NRA put 8% of their federal campaign contributions toward Democrats. This election cycle, they've received 26% percent.
emphasis added

Though the NRA has yet to release many key endorsements heading into the fall elections some major races could be affected when the word comes down. In the midst of a tough re-election campaign, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid could get a boost as the NRA considers endorsing him.
In Indiana, Democratic Senate candidate Brad Ellsworth, a former sheriff, may win the organization's endorsement over Republican Dan Coats.

***snip***

"It's a freedom issue and that's what this is about," said Mitch Kopacz, president of Gun Owners of New Hampshire. "It's the canary in the cage if you will, the firearms... for free speech and other issues. If we have firearms we still have the rest of our rights."

While a contingent of voters will cast ballots strictly adhering to which candidate supports firearm freedoms, many others will prioritize other matters.

"Because the economy is bad and when the economy is bad all other issues get pushed to the side, including the issues about guns," explains Smith. "So I think what you're seeing with Democratic candidates is that the party has moved away from that more doctrinaire position against 2nd amendment rights."

9. What does that have to to with me or that source?
Please provide a link where I advocate for the Brady Campaign.

You can find plenty of links denigrating Fox News... outside this room.

10. Despite the source ...
The fact remains that today many more Democratic candidates have high ratings from the NRA than was true in the mid-1990s. Fox News is often biased in its news reporting, but that only makes it more interesting that they decided to publish this article. The article points out the fact that the NRA is not a wing of the Republican Party, but instead is a single issue organization. That issues is, of course, RKBA.

The NRA has taken a lot of heat from conservatives as they showed more support for Democrats.

NRA takes flak for ties with left

The National Rifle Association has taken heat for not officially opposing Eric Holder’s nomination; for considering an endorsement of Sen. Harry Reid; and for failing to vigorously oppose Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. AP photo composite by POLITICO

The National Rifle Association, the powerful lobbying group that has been a longtime nemesis of liberals, is facing mounting criticism from influential allies on the right and even from its own board over a series of recent moves they say are selfish, short-sighted and ultimately harmful to the conservative movement.

Critics cite a list of transgressions, from considering an endorsement of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), to endorsing moderate Republicans — and even Democrats — rather than their more-conservative challengers, to taking a cautious approach to Second Amendment court cases and President Barack Obama’s judicial nominees.

***snip***

Republican congressional leaders have privately conveyed their unhappiness to NRA officials, but online conservative activists linked to the tea party movement have been vociferous in their criticism.

“The NRA is all about the NRA — helping their organization and not necessarily the cause,” said influential conservative blogger Erick Erickson, who has repeatedly taken to his blog RedState in recent weeks to urge conservatives to turn their backs on the NRA.

***snip***

Chris Cox, the NRA’s chief lobbyist, said the criticism ignores the reason the NRA is such a powerful brand: that it focuses on its core mission of advancing gun owners’ rights, rather than on trying to advance the goals of the conservative movement, writ large.

“We are part of the conservative movement, but the Second Amendment is unique because it transcends politics; it transcends race, gender, socioeconomic and certainly partisan lines,” he said. “I may have strong personal views on a lot of things — whether it’s health care, immigration, the bank bailouts, taking over car companies, all those things — but that’s not my job. My job and my fiduciary responsibility is to get up every day and protect the Second Amendment.”

It may drive people who support draconian gun law crazy, but the NRA might be able to make a difference in close elections and elect pro-RKBA candidates from the Democratic Party to office. That would be good for gun owners and for our nation.

13. I notice you are very picky about sources ...
I will be incredibly impressed if you do some research that proves that only conservative candidates get support from the NRA.

You might be interested in visiting this link which details NRA contributions to Federal candidates.
http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/pacgot.php?cmte=C00053553&cycle=2010

If you look at the data you will find that in the 2010 cycle the NRA has contributed a total of $148,450 to Democratic candidates to the House and Senate and a total of $344,350 to Republicans. You can also see who they gave money to.

14. I've been noticing comments on other websites
About Conservative gun owners who are very unhappy with the NRA's endorsement of Reid.

My reaction toward these Conservative gun owners is WTF? I thought they were only worried about the 2A and the RKBA? I wasn't aware that they thought the NRA was supposed to be the Republican's lapdog.

15. Many gun owners ARE one issue voters ...
and given a choice between a Democratic candidate with a high NRA rating and a Republican with the same rating, might choose the Democrat. One factor is how hard the Democratic Party is pushing for gun control. If the one issue voter fears draconian guns laws will be passed by a Democratically controlled Congress and signed into law by a Democrat in the Presidential office, they may still hold their nose and vote for the Republican candidate.

If our party gives up on the failed idea of banning and restricting firearms, we will attract many gun owners who agree with us on the position we take on many extremely important issues.

The Republican Party and the consevatives will be furious! No longer will they be able to count on support of gun owners or the NRA. Since they are already pro-RKBA, they will be unable to change their position to attract those voters who have deserted to the Democratic Party. Many more close elections will be won by Democrats who support RKBA.

This isn't to say that we have to give up on ALL gun control measures. Many gun owners support the existing laws and even some improvements to them. They oppose gun registration, micro-stamping ammunition, firearm bans and other "feel good" laws. They do agree with strict enforcement of most existing laws.

There's a good handful of NY Republicans who're (vs whore) anti gun dolts. Stachowski (Dem) my local senator is hardcore pro-gun. NRA endorsed as A+.

16. They have gotten use to our party opposing RKBA.
For a long time it made it simple. Many on DU share the same view.

Democrats are suppose to support all gun control no matter how illogical, ineffective, or poorly thought out (take AWB as example). Anyone deviating from that line is called a RW, gun nut, teabagger, etc.

You are simply seeing the flip side on that among conservatives.

It is confusing when you have some Democratic candidates being strong supporters of RKBA and some Republicans being hostile to RKBA. It upsets a black or white view of the world. Makes people take hard looks at candidates and not just rubber stamp their vote.

Some people (in both parties) are going to lash out against that. I expect within a generation the NRA will be center right but political support will be closER to center. Maybe 65/35 or even 60/40.

Lots of Democratic candidates have woken up to the fact that gun control simply doesn't work. Even worse it is politically expensive. After two decades they are saying. Is it worth pouring tons and tons of political capital down this blackhole called gun control?

Some of these guys were primary challengers who didn't make the cut, but some of them are still very much in the running:
