2. They're illegal in Massachusetts...
Funny, how I've read responses from anti-gunners in this forum advocating less lethal/alternative forms of defense, yet that option is unavailable to MA residents. Not to be out done, the MA legislature has also outlawed the possession of EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse), devices... I feel so much safer. :)

5. Good question.
I really don't know. They are exempt from AW, hi-cap mag and "banned" handgun resrictions (the AW and hi-cap mag exemption also includes retired LEO's.. can't say what they need them for).

Because of safety issues, drop tests or approval by the Attorney General, I can't purchase a new Glock, Kimber or Colt, but local PD's can purchase as many as they might need. Why is that?

6. Maybe they are not
all about safety. Limit availability. Neither of my handguns would pass muster in CA. No magazine safety, no loaded chamber indicator on one. However, since all guns are loaded and I never depend on a mechanical safety, what good are those mechanisms. If a child is allowed access to a weapon, a mag will probably be available. Anyone unsafe enough to not rack a slide and visually inspect the chamber will not see a little piece of metal, if they know what it is. I admit, I have used the chamber indicator to tactilely insure a round is chambered without unholstering. after a couple of years, I got out of the habit.

9. What about pepper spray or tear gas?
Your post reinforces why I'll never live in Mass. Got stationed at Pease AFB, NH. Flew home out of Logan for leave. Took a shotgun and a rifle with me for hunting. Don't know how many times I got rousted by cops for two legal firearms, but it was several. Did I mention that I was traveling in uniform because I figured it would reduce the gun hassles? I had to wait several hours because of the base shuttle schedule, so the local cops had plenty of time to check me out. They took advantage of it. I got questioned. I had to produce my DL and mil ID, my mil registration for the firearms, my letter from my CO that gave me permission to remove them from the SP armory for more than one week, and my leave papers at least 3 times. I also got frisked, forced to turn out my pockets, and forced to watch folks who had no clue about such things - aside from their service revolvers - handle my firearms for "inspection".

It was not a fun experience. That was mid-70's. I can imagine what it's like now.

10. MA residents can posess pepper spray...
Edited on Thu Jan-22-04 04:42 PM by D__S
they just have to have an FID card, undergo a background check and pay a $100.00 non-refundable (even if denied), fee... no big deal ;)

http://www.2ndamendment.com/Miscellaneous/News/20030716-1.htm

However, there's talk of waiving the $100.00 fee (and I assume from the gist of the article, the background check as well).

... a couple of more pols pimping for the NRA.

4. No Real Mystery Here....
They were obviously trying for an acronym similar to "laser", which stands for "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission
of Radiation." They knew which letters they wanted to use, and selected five words that fit.

7. Nope....
the inventor started out trying to design a weapon like Tom Swift had. He had the name before he had a product, back when it was just an idea.

8. An eerie foreboding glance of the early “corrupt gun industry”
TOM SWIFT AND HIS ELECTRIC RIFLE

OR

Daring Adventures in Elephant Land

by VICTOR APPLETON

CHAPTER I - TOM WANTS EXCITEMENT

"Have you anything special to do to-night, Ned?" asked Tom Swift, the well-known inventor, as he paused in front of his chum's window, in the Shopton National Bank.

"No, nothing in particular," replied the bank clerk, as he stacked up some bundles of bills.

"Why do you ask?"

"I wanted you to come over to the house for a while."

"Going to have a surprise party, or something like that?"

"No, only I've got something I'd like to show you."

"A new invention?"

"Well, not exactly new. You've seen it before, but not since I've improved it. I'm speaking of my new electric rifle. I've got it ready to try, now, and I'd like to see what you think of it. There's a rifle range over at the house, and we can practice some shooting, if you haven't anything else to do."

"I haven't, and I'll be glad to come. What are you doing in the bank, anyhow; putting away more of your wealth, Tom?"
