........................

the AWB banned AWs with 3 or more
of the following features {the first 2, were usually chosen]

1. Rec. The "ban" led to importers grinding off bayonet lugs and changing
stock configurations and removing attached grenade launchers and calling the resulting guns "sporters". The law itself was self serving bullshit - pols got some votes from the ignorant anti-gun crowd, and nothing really changed except prices for the "pre-ban" rifles went up dramatically, and even the mutilated "sporter" versions became more desirable to those who felt the government was out to take all guns...The Chinese SKS rifle that is resting in my closet once cost around $79...I bought it post-ban for around $185, and just saw a similar one for sale yesterday for nearly $300. The gun dealers and importers loved the "ban" - they made fortunes on it.The GOP loved it, too - they still make political hay out of it. The Dems lost way more than they gained out of it,and it is still mentioned on EVERY gun website almost every time the Democratic Party or a Democratic politician is mentioned - the Democrats will be paying for that "ban" for at least another 10 years, and maybe forever.

It is a fine example of Washington Democratic stupidity, and the fact that ANYONE still thinks it was a good thing is unbelievable.

2. You forgot to mention that before the ban most
People neither cared about nor owned scary rifles. Now everyone seems to have one. Good job making those sales brady campaign.

3. The forbidden is always desired. I have owned several,an they are not legal for hunting
here in PA, so they just sit in the closet. That was OK when they were cheap, but I can't have a $900 FAL just sitting around gathering dust...so it got traded to a gunshop last year, and no one has bought it from the shop yet-I just saw it yesterday.

Hell, if I had the money, I'd buy it back...they marked it down $200!

14. Why illegal? Because they're semi-automatic?
or because of some "assault weapon" feature?

:hi:

15. Some quick research showed that semi-auto firearms are not legal for hunting ...
in PA.

Damn. That's pretty restrictive.

4. You can't get a straight answer from the FBI's UCR, but..
If you look at their table on homicide by weapon in each of the years they've produced the data, the 'rifle' percentage is about 3%.

year...#rifles....#total....%rifle
2005...445.......14,965....2.97%
2006...438.......15,087....2.90%
2007...453.......14,916....3.03%
2008...380.......14,224....2.67%
2009...348.......13,636....2.55%

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/offenses/expanded_information/data/shrtable_08.html

So all rifles, whether ebil scurry ones or granddad's 30-30 account for a small number of deaths. At least 1/3 more occur with hands / fists / feet each year, and four to five times as many with knives or other cutting instruments.

A study for the DOJ on the AWB effectiveness found the same thing:

http://www.sas.upenn.edu/jerrylee/research/aw_final2004.pdf

Similarly, the most common AWs prohibited by the 1994 federal ban accounted for between 1% and 6% of guns used in crime according to most of several national and local data sources examined for this and our prior study (see Chapter 6 and Roth and Koper, 1997, Chapters 5, 6):
• Baltimore (all guns recovered by police, 1992-1993): 2%
• Miami (all guns recovered by police, 1990-1993): 3%
• Milwaukee (guns recovered in murder investigations, 1991-1993): 6%
• Boston (all guns recovered by police, 1991-1993): 2%
• St. Louis (all guns recovered by police, 1991-1993): 1%
• Anchorage, Alaska (guns used in serious crimes, 1987-1993): 4%
• National (guns recovered by police and reported to ATF, 1992-1993): 5%
• National (gun thefts reported to police, 1992-Aug. 1994): 2%

Of course, during that same timeframe, sales of AR-15's actually went up.

5. Banning "assault rifles" was a first step to banning other firearms ...
Had the "assault weapons" ban been successful, it would have been followed by a ban on small handguns commonly used in crime or a ban on semi-auto pistols. Eventually all handguns would have been banned or greatly restricted and rifles and shotguns would have also faced tests to ascertain that they were appropriate for hunting and not designed for self defense.

Fortunately, gun owners rallied to support candidates who opposed gun control. The sad part, of course, is that many Democrats lost close races because of their position on gun control. That appears to be changing, but occasionally some Democrat from a very liberal bastion has to voice his support for more draconian gun regulation. The media immediately broadcasts his statements nationwide and the backlash hurts the chances for more conservative Democrats to win races all over the country.

6. Assault Weapons Don't Kill People. People Kill People.

I made that one up all by myself. You Gun Enthusiasts feel free to use it, OK?

12. As long as we're stealing material: "Would you feel better if they was pushed outta windows?"
I stole that from some writer for All in the Family.

I doubt it makes much difference to the victims and their survivors what method was used, and more the fact of the murder itself...

17. It's Always Fascinating When A Sub-Human Like Nugent Attracts A Following.

He's one of the loudest and most obnoxious voices of the militant gun rights movement in this country, not to mention being a well-documented racist, death junkie, NRA bigwig, and frothing-at-the-mouth liberal hater. And he's on your side of the issue, big-time---don't humiliate yourself by trying to deny it....

Your rhetoric is circa 1990, too.

Ted Nugent is the face of the gun rights movement about as much as Van Halen is the face of MTV.

11. You don't know me, so you compound a substance-free

post with a slur. I'm actually not at all impressed with Ted Nugent -- but I'm less impressed with your dishonest ilk.
