Poll question: Strong gun control's effect on who gets to own guns in society.
After observing the protests in the middle east I wonder how many people here feel that strong gun control is benign and how many think that strong gun control presents a risk that a particularly ambitious and non-democratic leader can decide via gun control who gets to own the guns which can result in an inability for the population to deal with that government and restore true democracy.

Examples (which may be theoretical or real)

Did gun control allow Mubarak to decide which individuals were able to own guns and did that result in a disproportionate amount of pro-democracy minded people not owning firearms compared to those who supported Mubarak.

Did gun control allow Hitler to decide who got to own guns and who didn't and would that have made it difficult for political opponents to stop him or protect themselves from assassination?

If Bush declared himself dictator and he announced he would pass "strong gun control" would you worry about him denying opponents guns while allowing his supporters easy access to guns?

etc etc

Does strong gun control create a risk as described above, choice 1 is no and choice 2 is yes.

If you have a strong opinion, please post.

1. You're not going to war with your government. Been there, done that.
It was called the Civil War.

Never again.

3. Fine. What you envision is even less democratic, and is not constitutionally protected.

4. Yes it is constitutionally protected and no, our government is not sufficiently
Oppressive to even warrant mass protests yet. Thanks to the 2A we probably will not have to ever fight a revolution

11. How about the war
for American independence?

Or were guns in private hands a bad idea then too?

7. Does the Government fear the citizens, or do the citizens fear their Government?

Citizens have a right to keep and bear arms; subjects keep what arms the Government allows.
