1. Note: No one was hurt or killed
Yeah, kids shouldn't bring guns to school, but merely HAVING the gun caused no harm

9. I did not say that did I?
All I said is that no one got hurt

And I think we agree that a school is no place to bring a gun

13. Ah but the NRA is a strong supporter of giving children guns
particularly bullies, and telling them to settle their disputes using violence.

They have a popular program for children called: if teacher gives you an F, bring a gun in to class and kill everyone.

/At least according to jpak that's what they support.

14. If they are, they're nuts
Teachers, however, I can see a case to be made for teachers having guns...

he's just incredibly dry and sarcastic and no one is catching it.

3. Jpak stop trying to argue that kids should be allowed to take guns to school
If your under 21 (or 18) you cannot legally be in possession of guns and your anecdotes of kids taking guns to schools without injury does not mean they should be able to do it.

20. So what's the solution jpak?
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 06:36 AM by LAGC
What would your world look like where gun accidents were never possible?

I mean, its easy to point to problems with the way things are now, but what possible alternative would be better?

7. To the weapons industry activists, this is akin to you bringing out "cancer boy" for sympathy
Or like the coal industry says on their issue: "playing the asthma card".

10. It's more like the fundies claiming abortions cause breast cancer.
Faith-promoting rumor, in other words.

You're not supposed to notice that no one actually wants children bringing guns to school.

We are supposed to think that some new gun control law will somehow, in some unspecified way, prevent parental stupidity

and negligence.

18. Most gun owners I have dealt with were morons or homicidal
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 06:24 AM by Kolesar
Two of whom shot, but did not murder, my boss. You weaponers have to find a way to keep these creeps in line.

19. Thanks for your anecdotal account.
I guess that must mean by inference that most gun owners are homicidal maniacs or morons?

Why should the onus be on gun owners to keep the very few wackos in line? Isn't that ALL of our responsibility, to improve mental health access and try to find interventions before people feel the need to act out violently (regardless of the weapon they choose to use)?

21. And how many is that?
Surely more than the two who shot your boss. How big is your sample?

You weaponers have to find a way to keep these creeps in line.

What in the ever-lovin' world is that supposed to mean? Because I own guns, I'm supposed to be riding herd on dysfunctional lowlife idiots who can't provide a safe environment for their children?

Do you imbibe? I so, why don't you do something about all those drunken drivers and barroom brawlers out there? You alcoholers have to find a way to keep those creeps in line.

See how ridiculous it sounds?

22. I have a term for you: confirmation bias
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias

We tend to pay more attention to evidence that supports the opinions they already hold. For example, in my case, I've developed a belief that people who drive Dodges, Acuras and Lexuses (Lexi?) tend to be lousy drivers, and as a result, when I see someone driving badly, I'm more likely to notice that they're driving one of those three brands, because it confirms my pre-existing beliefs. However, when a Dodge, Acura or Lexus driver displays unremarkable driving skills, I tend not to notice, precisely because they are, as I say, unremarkable.

Along similar lines, I strongly suspect that confirmation bias has caused you, when someone displays moronic or homicidal behavior, to take note of whether that person is a gun owner. You may have dealt with gun owners who were neither morons nor homicidal, but precisely because they were neither, you didn't take note of the fact that they were gun owners.

It's precisely because people in general are prone to these kinds of cognitive bias (and I'm no exception) that the scientific method was developed.

23. You need to find a little higher grade of people to hang with
Maybe try to upgrade your friends cuz it sounds like you run with the wrong crowd. All of the gun owners I know, and I know dozens, are hard working well grounded individuals so it looks like YOU need to find some new people to hang around.

When are you going to call for alcohol prohibition and auto confiscation?

No one should be allowed to have booze OR cars, when you see the tragedy that can ensue.
