1. That shield will be bought up by the DoD
I have to say that is pretty impressive. I did see it in the three shots after I was explained about the one up against the tree.

2. I know the .577 t-rex seems ridiculous, but those types of rounds were for big big game
Edited on Sun Mar-13-11 02:51 PM by aikoaiko
The fellows in that video were inexperienced shooters, in general, and not in proper shooting position for a round that large.

There are several rounds about that size out there, but in a traditional rifle the laws of physics kick in (i.e., to every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction)and make for a natural upper end to what is practical.

6. Shot a 600 Express from a Double Rifle once
Guy at the range was sighting in a Holland & Holland double rifle he bought at an estate sale (the people thought it was a double barreled shotgun and sold it cheap) and offered to let me shoot it, if he could put a couple of clips through one of my Garands.

I jumped at the chance to fire a firearm that probably cost as much as my first house did, in fact probably more.

What a Kick, literally and figuratively! 4 rounds, no gas system to absorb any of the recoil, I felt it in my shoulder for days. I hit the target at 100 yards and a 2 x 4 that was supporting a target farther downrange, about 200 yards and it just turned it into splinters floating in the air.

9. It was in a fitted, but really beat up, Luis Vuitton case, complete with the original cleaning kit
Edited on Wed Mar-16-11 09:21 PM by DonP
He wrote H&H for the background on it and got a copy of the original bill of sale for it. The inetersting thing is it had fixed sights and you "sighted it in" by reloading different loads

But to someone that knows nothing about firearms something in central Indiana with two barrels, side by side is "an old shotgun". Heck the barrels are .60 diameter and a 12 gauge is what, .735 or so? That's the kind of thing I wouldn't mind running across at a farm auction.

10. It would be interesting to see the chain of ownership
That was never a cheap firearm, it was a big game hunter or "gentleman's" rifle. You don't run across a lot of elephant guns in central Indiana.

12. The original Bill of Sale he had with it was for around 25,000 Pound Sterling
Edited on Thu Mar-17-11 08:39 AM by DonP
I think it was from the early 1930s. I have no idea what the exchange rate was back then, but it was a hell of a rifle. Every time we fired it the echo hung over the range and bounced off the berms for several minutes. My normal hearing protection was a joke and my ears rang all day after we shot. By comparison the Garand sounded like a surpressed .22 after that.

I'll never get to shoot one of those again, that's for sure. But it was an interesting experience.

11. We hand a .600 Nitro Express once.
In this case it was a Weatherby, a poor man's H&H. It was one of those rifles that was both fascinating to own and miserable to shoot at the same time. I suppose if you were using it for it's intended purpose, dangerous African game, it would be the bees knees. If you shot four rounds through it you shot twice as much as the typical owner would fire in a week of hunting.

Oh, and I'm going to go with a friend to sight in his new Barrett rifle in a few weeks. It's one of those deals where you need a spotter just to get anything done. I don't really care if I get to shoot it or not. I suspect the only dangerous game he'll ever shoot with it will be made out of cardboard.

13. Odd article.
I didn't see much funny about.

The round labled ".577 T-Rex" is shown larger than the holder's hand. I have a .577 minie ball sitting on my desk and it's smaller than my thumb. Something doesn't add up.

I also find the idea of blowing away animals for fun to be sickening. I don't have a problem shooting animals for food, or to get rid of pests. But shooting animals for pleasure is just killing for pleasure and that's sick.
