Editorial: Gun legislation is getting out of hand (Arizona)
http://prescottdailycourier.com/main.asp?SectionID=36&SubsectionID=73&ArticleID=92117

State revenues continue to flounder and massive cuts to social services remain this Arizona Legislature's enduring legacy. But fear not, our lawmakers are on the case again. More guns are on the way.

Senate Bill 1201 is floating through the Legislature, and not without the controversy that our lawmakers are consistently prioritizing as distractions from their inability to balance their budget (which we all recognize regardless of the decoy bills). It's probably not the bill you were looking for from your elected officials; not that that has stopped this session of the Legislature before.

SB 1201 would allow guns into publicly funded buildings, which is worrying stadium and concert venue officials statewide. We're led to believe that any venues that serve alcohol would be exempt, but who are they kidding? These facilities are owned, leased and operated with some public funding, which defines them as public establishments under the bill. It's only a matter of time before gun activists support bigger government by legislating that everyone in every setting is armed.

Which leads to the constant controversies surrounding any new gun legislation pushed in Arizona. When is enough enough?

<much more>

1. But, but but last week you said ...
... that there was a big backlash against more liberal gun laws in Arizona?

You promised us breathlessly, and in many capital letters, that the Arizona Dems would put a stop to all this GOP evilness. How could you let this happen?

In the meantime the loosening of gun regs continues and violent crime is still at a 40 year low.

2. Of course, they already passed this
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31683427/ns/us_news-life/

Even in the much romanticized "old west", it was common for Sheriffs to require that everyone check their guns when entering the town (to reduce the chance that drunks would start shooting each other). And if the Sheriff didn't do it, the Saloon owner would.

Yeeee Ha!

5. This isn't the wild west. In 2011 we've come a long way to ensure freedom from a
Sheriffs desire to violate the constitutional rights of private citizens

7. The Wild West
You do know that such laws were routinely ignored and ,generally, did not apply to the local citizenry right?

9. re: Of course, they already passed this
Of course, it sounds way scarier when you say "GUNS IN BARS!!!!1111one11eleven" than it does if you say "individuals with a CCW permit and who DO NOT consume alcohol are permitted to carry in establishments that serve alcohol". Meaning that prior to this law, a permit holder could not go to Landry's steakhouse for some surf and turf and a glass of iced tea while carrying.

"Oh, just leave it in the car", you may say, but taking off and putting on a holster in a parking lot tends to draw a good bit of attention-and could well lead to your car being broken into and your gun stolen. A non-permit holder, while legally able to carry concealed, is not allowed to carry into an establishment that serves booze. Doesn't matter if it's a biker bar where the only food is pretzels or a 5 star restraunt where the only booze is 300 dollar a bottle wine.

The public place bill referenced to the article states that public buildings cannot prohibit firearms UNLESS they provide storage AND are equipped with metal detectors to ensure that there is no way to bring a gun in. Keeps "No Gun" zones from becoming "Unarmed Victim" zones.

4. It's like all Republican overreach, really -- replete with condescension, snark, and utterly limited
...world views.

6. Editorial which means his opinion isn't worth squat
It is also intentionally dishonest and misleading:

"It's only a matter of time before gun activists support bigger government by legislating that everyone in every setting is armed"

"SB 1201 has nothing to do with the Second Amendment. Nothing. Zilch. Anyone who says differently is blinded by an irrational love of guns, not prudence. The bill is simply unnecessary. It has no value, other than to exercise a fascination with flaunting a freedom that, for some, will not end - will never end - until every man, woman and child in the State of Arizona is required by statute not only to own a firearm but to carry both concealed and open guns at all times"

10. Not in AZ
State Senator Scahpira (Senate Minority Leader) admitted on TV that they were helpless to do ANYTHING about ANYTHING because 'pubs have such an overwhelming majority in the state legislature and in the state executive branch. Gun control is also a losing issue for 99% of candidates in AZ. Even Giffords record is very pro-gun, and she represents one of the most liberal areas in our state.

Does your post even mean anything?

I don't think so.

Intentionally dishonest and misleading, you're not even going to address that, are you?
