The ATF strikes again ...

UPDATE: ATF official rethinking exercise after sparking wildfire
Posted: Wednesday, May 11, 2011 5:00 pm | Updated: 6:58 am, Thu May 12, 2011.

An ATF official is rethinking a training exercise to detonate explosives that sparked a wildfire in northwestern Motley County on Tuesday.

"In hindsight, we should have," Jim Luera, resident agent in charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in Lubbock, said in response to whether his agency should have delayed the exercise conducted while much of the region is under a burn ban due to wildfire-ripe conditions.

"There's a burn ban on and red flag warning and they're out there blowing stuff up," said Coy Franks, who leases pasture land in the area.

***snip***

Luera said the federal agency routinely disposes of explosives it acquires, many of which are "oil field explosives that they can no longer use because they get wet or sat out too long." Detonation exercises are conducted to train area bomb squads, and representatives from Lubbock, Amarillo, Abilene, Midland and Odessa, as well as Texas Tech University, reportedly were on hand Tuesday.

It would appear that the ATF management doesn't lack hindsight, just foresight.

"And those flashbangs aren't dangerous!!"

"there were no guns on those helicopters!"

"well, what I said was there were no mounted guns on those helicopters..."

"How many fire extinguishers do you have?"

"Someone ought to buy some fire insurance."

This thread could be LOTS of fun.

11. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fellatio
Edited on Thu May-12-11 02:32 PM by one-eyed fat man
What began as a routine investigation of a malfunctioning fire-alarm system at a New Orleans hotel suite ended with police arresting 44-year-old Russell Vanderwerf, an ATF agent, after discovering a homemade glory hole in the bedroom door along with a child's sock and an Elmo doll. Dec 10, 2009

ATF = Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fellatio?

In what is probably either a clever fraud or a totally unrelated coincidence, a reader in New Orleans found something strange in the "casual encounters" section of Craigslist New Orleans... An ad popped up on December 2, two days after Vanderwerf's arrest, but several days before news of Vanderwerf's arrest became public. This ad claimed that a glory hole at the Metairie Residence Inn was "infected with stds." While the guest was said to give "great" head, the writer claimed to have contracted both herpes and hepatitis A as a result of one of his numerous visits.

By the way, Agent Venderwerf is a GS-15. 2011 Base General Schedule Pay Scale so his base pay is $129517 a year. Since he is posted to a "high cost area," i.e. Houston, he gets 28.71% "pay adjustment."

$155,500!! By the way, he is still on the payroll, and listed prominently on the Houston Field Division's website.
