Grassley (R-moran) vows to block (Obama) nominees until he gets answers on gun sales
http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/163095-grassley-vows-to-block-nominations-until-he-gets-answers-on-gun-program

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R(edit-moran-Iowa) is vowing to block President Obama’s nominations until he gets detailed answers on a controversial program that resulted in drug cartels acquiring more than 1,300 firearms from the U.S.

Grassley is pressing the Department of Justice (DOJ) on who initiated the “Gun Runner” program that authorized the sale of guns to people acting as straw purchasers for drug cartels in Mexico. Gun Runner might have contributed to the death of at least one federal agent.

As the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Grassley has been working closely with House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R (edit-moran)-Calif.) for the past several months, gathering documents and conducting interviews with DOJ officials and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents in an attempt to find out who gave the order for the operation.

Sources note that unlike Grassley, Issa has subpoena power.

1. Both Republicans AND Democrats need to be upset about any program ...
where our government ALLOWS smugglers to run guns into Mexico. The job of the ATF is to stop gun smuggling.

It's like the cops allowing bank robbers to rob banks or the Department of Homeland Security allowing known terrorist who are experts on assembling improvised explosive devices to enter our country and run free.

DEA accidentally finds guns from ATF "gunwalker"
May 19, 2011 5:22 PM

CBS News has learned that the DEA has confiscated a stash of assault rifles connected to ATF's Fast and Furious operation. It's a major seizure of weapons in the controversial ATF case that's the subject of at least two investigations. Sources say it's believed the suspects intended to take the guns to Mexico.

Sources say DEA accidentally came upon the guns while stopping suspects in an unrelated case in the Phoenix area on April 13th. When agents stopped at least two suspects, they found two giant garbage cans full of dozens of AK-47 type weapons wrapped in cellophane. Sources tell CBS News that a trace on the first weapon showed it was purchased in Nov. 2009 by a suspect in ATF's Fast and Furious case.

***snip***

Insiders allege that ATF allowed more than 2,500 weapons purchased by suspects to "walk," or hit the streets. The current seizure underscores the fact that most of those weapons are still on the street and unaccounted for.

9. How serendipitous
Had it not been for some pencil neck somewhere insisting on sending bean bags to a gun fight , we might never had known at all . And that ain't entirely true , I would still be bitching about The Iron River .

Here we see locals making tread plates for anti personnel mines with the molten steel as it winds its way Southward .

3. Glad to see something being done to stop the stonewalling at the ATF
Based on what has come out from the whistle blowers there are a lot of top ATF officials that need to be in jail.

12. So it's perfectly alright for a government agency to allow 2500 assault weapons ...

to be smuggled across the border as long as you have a Democratic administration?

If this would have happened under a Republican President would you have the same view? How about if one of these weapons killed a member of your family?

It shouldn't matter whose party is in control, both Democrats and Republicans and all Americans should be upset by this fiasco.

23. Then, Grassley had to dance for those who paid him
now he is doing right.

Larger question is: if DEA does something wrong, Dems tend to jump all over it but Reps will ignore it. ATF does something wrong, same thing different parties.
That is wrong.

11. BS - the GOP passed a bill forbidding the ATF from monitoring multiple gun sales in border states
This a smokescreen to distract from the REAL problem.

Straw sales at US gunshops & shows

13. jpak, how would you go about preventing straw sales?
I mean, someone buying a gun for someone else pretty much defeats any gun control system conceivable.

What can possibly be done to prevent such a phenomenon from occuring?

druggies giving them the money to buy the guns regardless where they come from, the lack of social justice in Mexico etc.

24. And again you ignore the fact
that it's easier and cheaper for the cartels to buy full auto weapons (NOT something you can pick up at a gun shop or show) and things like hand grenades and grenade launchers from rebels or governments to the south of them. Or they steal or buy them from their own army, who get most of their weapons from us.

18. Good.
I support this action, with the aim of getting to the bottom of this disgrace foisted on the American people.

And I'd support it no matter who proposed it.

Gop/nra smokescreen indeed... :eyes:

If one is under some sort of delusion that ATF whistleblowers, CBS news, and now the DEA, are all nra/gop operatives, perhaps...

20. So you approve of the gun runner project?
Or the refusal to be honest about it? Exactly what is it about this gun runner scandal that makes you so resistive to the truth?

21. Truth and The Rule of Law as partisan issues
Maybe Brian Terry was a Republican .

" Judge James Teilborg has postponed the trial for 20 people accused of participating in a ring that brought more than 700 guns to be smuggled into Mexico for use by a drug cartel" He moved it from June to next February . And they have them dead to rights , caught red handed, open and shut ....oh wait .
