Violent crimes involving guns decrease in Dayton (not due to "more guns")

DAYTON — A drastic reduction in the number of gang-related homicides and a decrease in the number of violent crimes involving guns is being attributed to the 2½ year project called Community Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence.

The number of gun crimes in Dayton year-to-date is the lowest of the past five years as is the number of gun crimes with injury and area gang-related, or group-member-involved, homicides have decreased from 15 in 2008 to five in 2010. So far in 2011 there have been four such incidents, said Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl said.

But even with the successes, the group is seeing an increasingly mobile population of offenders whose use of cellphones and the Internet allow them much farther reach.

“They’re getting smart,” Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer said. “They know where the heat’s at and they’re starting to spread out.”

with more restrictions, registration and bans. We need to concentrate on the problem with is the CRIMINAL misuse of firearms.

There is no doubt that gang related violence is a major contributor to the violent crime rate in our nation. Targeting criminal gangs is logical and far more effective than another useless assault weapons ban.

All of my guns will live pampered lives on the target range.

If you spent half the effort targeting gun-wielding criminals that you put into demonizing the lawful and nonviolent, you might get more accomplished. :)
