My husband owns a lot of guns. He loves to go to gun shows,

but never buys anything. He has in the past bought some ammo because some of the dealers offer great prices. He goes to a target range several times a year. I think some people here get too excited about people owning guns. everyone I've known own them for sport or hunting. When we were first married, it was a life saver to have venison to suppliment our grocery bill. I learned how to cook it well and everyone was happy.

Either way, I think you're accurately describing a large proportion of US gun owners...

in fact you have to brine them and actually add fat when cooking or thy come out so tough they're uneatable

appropriately. Unfortunately, that doesn't go for those who are depressed or have anger control issues. My father's best friend--who was so like my Dad, went hunting with my Dad and who I always thought to be like a kindly uncle--should not have had those guns in the home. I'll just say that his emotions got the better of him and that ready supply of guns was not a good thing--for him or his wife. This was a sad and sentinel event in my childhood. My Dad was never really the same after that and frankly, i never looked at guns the same, either.

Sorry, to bring the "downer" reality to the discussion, but the point is sadly repeated on a near daily basis in this country.

I've found that marinating in milk leaches out the "gaminess" out of it. I also slow cook it in a crock pot with lots of veggies and a bit of beef broth. Always came out great!!!! (crap, now I'm getting hungry)

Venison always tasted bland to me. I have heardthat the "gamey" taste comes form shooting the animal on the run when the meat is full of adrenalin.

What makes one firearm an "assault weapon" and another, not?

Ease. Imagine if you could go easily access a dangerous book.

All those misanthropic blue collar types that keep your car running, your grocery shelves filled, water and electricty coming to your McMansion and do all the REAL work so you won't have to break a nail?

When I was growing up, I used to hate being called a redneck. Then I went out into the world, and discovered that the most trustworthy, honest, and courageous people I met were what the upper crust called rednecks. I guarantee that if you look at any military outfit, in any branch, you will find a disproportionate number of rednecks. They joined because they were taught that being an American doesn't come free - and they go out and put their lives on the line to pay back that obligation. They are one of the reasons that America is still great in so many ways.

So if you want to call me a redneck, I will gladly agree with you...

Those "rednecks, hicks, yahoos" are the same people marching on Madison. In addition, to fixing your car etc. They grow your food, kill the cow that you are stuffing your face with so you don't have to do the uncivilized thing and go kill your own food.

More Americans own "assault weapons" (small- and intermediate-caliber civilian rifles with modern styling) than hunt. AR's and whatnot dominate sport shooting in this country, and are among the least misused guns in the United States. I'm a competitive shooter, FWIW, but like most gun owners I don't hunt.


I hold a NC carry license; qualifying for it involved a Federal background check, a state background check, a mental health records check, an FBI fingerprint check, a state-sanctioned class on self-defense law, and demonstration of competence on a shooting range.

I'm afraid I'm going to object to your "redneck" characterization here; I've mentioned many times before that I'm a technical writer and computer geek myself, B.A. and some grad work in English, my dream car is a Volvo, I despise football and NASCAR, and I carry a S&W Lady Smith. If I were to collide with an actual redneck, we'd probably undergo a matter/antimatter reaction and annihilate in a burst of gamma rays.

I seriously doubt the guy in the woods with the .30-30, the pickup, and the Skoal hat cares more about carry licensure than the urban/suburban handgun owner.

If you are a guy who carries a Lady Smith, you are not a redneck.

They would chit chat about how much they loved the Montana wilderness and eating game before our professor started his lectures. They're both nursing students now.

These are the type of people I picture when I think of gun owners.

I had no such experience. While we all know people who have vandalized and murdered, all of the ones I knew were with cars or done themselves in with drugs and booze. The only people I knew who even pulled a gun on another person was my brother when he answered a radio call to the first armed robbery in ten years. The other was a someone in my high school who shot and killed his step father to save his mom from an abusive drunken rage. The county DA did not even bother to prosecute because it was a clear case of justifiable homicide.
And this is in Wyoming.

I do believe said the problem with the pharmacist was that he continued to shoot him when he was down. No one defended that. The first shot could have very well been self defense.
Was she unarmed? I thought I read that she stole a gun. If she had one and was aiming it at you, things get complex.
Depends on the property, that was pointed out. If stealing an oxygen tank and you need it to live, that is not the same as a tv or vcr. Same with expensive tools that you use in a trade to buy food and pay the mortgage.

the issue with the girl turned from what happened to what if. I don't have time to go back and look at it. You missed the larger point. Legally, in some places, a finger in a jacket pocket claiming to have a gun is the same as having a gun. No one said they would shoot an unarmed girl. They said they would if the girl was aiming one at them. Big difference.

I go to the shows to check out the latest and greatest, look at all the history, and buy odds and ends type stuff. Of the 100's I've been to I've only bought 1 at a show.

One was an Enfield No. 4 Mk II that was in great shape for it's age. Used my C&R for that one from another C&R, no waiting period.

The other was a month or so ago when I got suckered into one of those Golden Boy Henry's in .22. Shoots shorts, Longs and Long Rifles. It was really pretty with the brass and the oiled walnut and I convinced myself of how much money I'd save in the long run buying shorts to plink with in the backyard. I'm a sucker for my own stories and excuses.

I was actually trying to find those machine gun kits and under the table deals we always hear about. But in the case of the Henry I had to go through the waiting period, and NICS check. I must have missed the KKK and Neo-Nazi table sign up too. NRA was there, the Illinois State Assn.

Oh well, there's always next month.

I particularly love people here that tell us all about what happens at gun shows, even though they have never been to one and lie about going very poorly.

Then they admit that the so called loophole is really an issue with private sales, but keep using the "hopefully" more inflammatory "Gun Show Loophole" phrase to try and fool the less informed.
