Kiln 11-year-old dies after he's hit by bullet in dad's truck outside Vicksburg restaurant
http://www.greenfieldreporter.com/view/story/8a113a22b2ea4f61ab37eec60666e272/MS--Shooting-Death/

Vicksburg police say they believe the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy from the Mississippi Gulf Coast was an accident.

Lt. Bobby Stewart told The Vicksburg Post that Christian B. Jordan, of Kiln, was shot in the chest Monday afternoon with a .22-caliber handgun while sitting with a friend in Christian's father's pickup outside Goldie's Trail Barbeque restaurant, near Interstate 20.

Stewart said Christian's father, Blue Jordan, went into the restaurant to pick up food and left his son and a 14-year-old, who's a lifelong family friend, in the truck.

Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said the 14-year-old was in the back seat and Christian was in the front. The older boy moved the gun as Christian turned to speak. It fired, and a bullet went through the seat into Christian.

22. Indeed. It's not like it's that hard, either.
Don't touch. First and foremost. Don't touch a gun without adult supervision. Dangerous.

You wouldn't leave a kid alone sitting in the driver's seat of a running car without telling him he shouldn't play with it, would you?

2. This is not a gun control issue, it's a stupidity issue.
Hunters should store their weapons safely. Leaving a gun unsecured in a vehicle with teenagers is particularly dumb.

9. Thank goodness it was the negligent parent's son who was killed
and not the friend. That kid will have to live with the shock and grief for the rest of his life, but at least his parents are not burying him.

13. Why were they shooting turtles in the first place?
That sounds like kind of a dickish thing to do, unless they're pests or you're actually hunting.

As much as I empathize with the father's loss, I do think he should be charged. Leaving a loaded unsecured firearm in the car is the height of negligence. More generally, it seems the boys weren't inculcated with a firearms-safety mindset either, at home or at school (ideally, it should be both)...

18. Bingo. Kind of like saying "My car crashed."
No, you crashed it. Just like in this case an honest statement would have been "I grabbed the trigger and negligently fired the gun."

19. my read: 2 boys in a car with a gun, they play with it, aim, pull the trigger
the local paper runs this story in this wording knowing that this is a tragedy for the families involved. Plus if no one has been charged then the paper can't allege a crime.

Hence, 'the gun did it.'
