NRA To Attend UN Arms Trade Treaty Discussions At UN.

NRA will be in attendance at the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) “Preparatory Committee” meeting in New York, July 11-15. The so-called “Prep. Com.” will be laying the ground work for a final negotiation session in 2012. NRA’s message will be simple and strong – an ATT which in any way, shape or form affects the constitutional rights of American gun owners is simply unacceptable. Civilian firearms must not be within the scope of an ATT. There will be no compromise on this crucial point.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) agrees with NRA’s position and has drafted a letter to President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton expressing “grave concern about the dangers posed by the United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty.”

SNIP

As we have often reported, NRA has been engaged at the United Nations and elsewhere internationally in response to anti-small arms initiatives for more than 15 years. During this time, we have been actively opposing transnational efforts that would limit Americans’ Second Amendment freedoms and have been monitoring and actively fighting any and all attempts on the part of the UN to restrict our sovereignty and gun rights.

NRA has been a recognized Non-Governmental Organization at the United Nations since 1996. Our status as an NGO allows us to closely monitor the internal UN debate over firearm issues and report back to our members. Our NGO status also allowed NRA to take an active role in thwarting the absurdly titled “UN Conference to Review Progress Made in the Implementation of the Programme of Action to Prevent and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects” in 2006, and the previous meeting, the “UN Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons” in the summer of 2001.

9. You know, it's funny...
...how much many progressives look down on those who they label "survivalists" yet it is these folks who have taken steps to insure that they and theirs will be able to provide for themselves should the need arise, which can and does happen. I used to feel the same way as they do to a degree, until I started to build a family of my own with my beautiful wife. I began to realize that it was up to us to ensure that our family would be able to aid itself in some common disaster situations should the need arise. The various failures of FEMA after Katrina only served to reinforce this.

19. Usually co-located with major....
US military installations throughout the country. Funny thing is that I'm not only better prepared to survive any given situation but I'm probably better educated than you despite your attempt to stereotype.

13. Is there a connection with what must be a most efficient way to alienate voters:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/15/obama-gun-laws-congress_n_836138.html

"Obama Looking For Ways Around Congress On Gun Policy: Faced with a Congress hostile to even slight restrictions of Second Amendment rights, the Obama administration is exploring potential changes to gun laws that can be secured strictly through executive action, administration officials say."

If Obama is smart, he will wait until his second term on this.

14. Yeah well, he is a politician and that is what I expect
Pass the laws in the second term when he has nothing to lose, he doesn't have to worry about re-election, just screw over the Democrat running in 2016.

16. A second term for Obama is starting to look very doubtful.
The economy is still stuck in the doldrums. It is looking like it will stay bad for another year or more.. A President is rarely re-elected in a bad economy.

18. Not wishful, just realistic.
A bad economy is always bad for any sitting president. That is simply history.

21. Hardly.
Wishful thinking on most of us I believe would be the President telling the Brady Campaign to stuff it and getting on with the business of the nation. I'd also like it for him to continue to push us in the direction of a universal healthcare system, get us moving even more in the direction of renewable energy, and fix our broken and backwards education system and implement a system that guarantees education up to the bachelor degree level at a minimum for all citizens.

But I guess that's all just more of my "gungeon" wishful thinking.
