Iowa: Gun permit revoked after altercation in parking lot - more revocations since law change
Edited on Wed Jul-06-11 04:36 PM by RamboLiberal
A Waterloo woman's permit to carry a gun has been temporarily revoked following allegations she allegedly pulled a pistol during a parking lot accident over the weekend.

The incident was one of about half a dozen cases where residents have lost their weapons privileges after a run on carry permits ushered in by a change in state law in January.

Waterloo police arrested 32-year-old Nakima Jariece Owens for going armed with intent following a physical altercation where she racked a 9mm Glock Saturday night. Officers said the other driver had a 4-year-old child in her car.

"The number of revocations has increased since the new law, and the nature of the types of offenses that have occurred has also increased," Thompson said.

He said revocations before the new law were rare and minor.

A Waterloo woman was arrested Saturday after she allegedly pulled a handgun following a minor traffic accident.

Police said Nakima Jariece Owens, 32, who has a permit to carry weapons, claimed she was rear-ended by another vehicle while she was in the drive-through line at Taco John's restaurant, 1620 La Porte Road, at about 11:30 p.m.

The two drivers exchanged words, and a brief physical confrontation ensued.

After that, according to police, Owens returned to her car and grabbed a 9mm Glock handgun and worked the slide to chamber a round.

Half-dozen - still statistically small.

BTW, last year the suspect was cleared for shooting a man in a domestic assault case.

1. Take away the sheriffs' discretion, and you get more 'incidents' involving those with permits.
Who could have imagined?

6. Uhhhh, no.
Nice try though, but unless you can prove that these same people wouldn't have behaved in a similar manner without a firearm (such as threatening with a knife in the case of the parking lot woman) then your statement is not supported.

7. Oh come on, a lot of carriers do it as an "equalizer." There are many gunners who have posted same.

This gunner would not likely have picked up a rock, bat, or knife -- that's one reason they carry.

10. Because guns make non-violent people violent? Horseshit.
I don't think you know what an "equalizer" is.

4. Do they make up the charges as they go?
"arrested for going armed with intent"

Or is it just bad reporting?

8. If gun promoters are successful, we'll tap into less and less responsible carriers over time.

9. Something doesn't add up.
Before January, sheriffs had discretion in issuing the permits and could place restrictions on the licenses. With the change, sheriffs are directed to issue permits to applicants who meet training requirements and aren't barred from possessing firearms because of a criminal record or mental health reasons.

If there were no criminal or mental health issues, by what criteria were these "discretionary" denials determined? "I just didn't like the way he/she looked"?

The "high sheriff" model of may-issue licensing absolutely is a throwback to the racist past of gun control. That said, this women deserves to lose her permit over this incident.
