Would-be robbers stopped by gun-toting homeowner-took robbers cell to call 911
A Lincoln County man exercised his right to bear arms Tuesday when intruders attempted to break into his home.

Jerry Bowen didn’t run and hide when two Hickory men kicked in his door at his Warwick Court home in eastern Lincoln County, according to law enforcement. Instead the 42-year-old grabbed his gun and took charge of the situation.

Bowen fired a warning shot and ordered the men to the ground, according to Lincoln County Sheriff David Carpenter.

James David Rubenstahl and his nephew, Robert Ray Rubenstahl, did as they were told. They dropped to the ground and waited for police to arrive, said Carpenter who mentioned that Bowen searched the men and even used their cell phone to call 911.

1. They'll probably sue him for being impolite and scaring them.

2. Glad it worked out this time, however...
voluntarily moving to contact distance is extremely bad tactics.

3. He handled it in a very dangerous to himself manner.
NEVER fire warning shots. Your first shot should be directed at the center-of-mass of the intruder. Giving any kind of warning to a home invader give them a tactical advantage. While you are waiting to see what they do they can shoot you.

NEVER get close to the intruder. Even if they are wounded they can still grapple with you for control of the gun if you get close enough for them to make a grab for it.

North Carolina has Castle Doctrine. They kicked in his door. In such a situation the homeowner is under no moral or legal obligation to give the attackers any kind of chance. Kicking in your door is a violent attack and strongly indicates that they are ready to do violence to any residents. Your objective is to be alive and unhurt at the end of it all. The correct tactic is to shoot first with no warning. Two rapid center-of-mass shots into the closest one, instantly shift fire to the second, shoot until he is no longer a threat, shift back to the first one if still needed. With practice the drill can be executed in three seconds on a slow day.
